Fortune's Shawlette was inspired by the ubiquitous corner to corner stitch, aka the diagonal box stitch. But of course I had to add my own twist to the idea, creating a lacier, more open, summer ready stitch pattern. And boy, did it earn it's name! Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links. One skein of Knit Picks Fingering Hawthorne Fingering was used... and in the end, there was only 1 yard left over! Good fortune indeed! And while I was crocheting it, the stitch pattern reminded me of diamond plate - another sign! The result is gorgeous, and just right for year round

My Pink Shawl By N Banks Shawl at 28 inches Finished at right Update: Finally I finished the shawl. Its about 31 inches wide and about 75 inches long. I also used almost all the four skeins of yarn. I like to wrap up with it in the cool evenings when sitting outside. Sometimes I like to light some candles and just sit, it’s relaxing that way. I also am using size 9 circular knitting needles, and just knit back and forth. I placed the row marker on one end of the needles, and it works fine that way. If you want it done faster you could use a size 10 needle, but you would also need more yarn. It has taken me a lot longer to knit it because my shoulders hurt, and I have to stop knitting for awhile. Rats! I decided I wanted it warm, and I also wanted it wide and long. I didn’t use lace stitches or yarn overs in this design like I did for the cables and lace shawl http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2015/11/cables-and-lace-shawl-2013-mystery-knit.html. But I didn’t want it plan or simple another shawl I did, My Winter Shawl http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2013/10/my-winter-shawl.html or like the Lace Rib Shawl or Scarf Pattern I did some time ago. http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2014/10/lace-rib-shawl-or-scarf-pattern.html. (more shawl patterns here: knitted shawl patterns http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/search/label/Free%20Knitting%20Patterns%20Shawls ) But I didn’t want to have to read a pattern for every row either. This one I just knit, no reading of a written pattern row by row. I used stitch patterns I liked and cables I already have done to make it easy and simple for me. I wanted to just look at the stitch and the row number on the counter and knit, and I knew that every so many rows some of the stitch patterns would change. All patterns used are just plain knit and purl, no yarn overs, no slipping of stitches, passing stitches over. Just plain and simple knitting. The problem I have is with the color of the yarn I choose, lol. I picked one that was bright and cheerful, but when I went to take pictures of it for this article, the pink didn’t show up right, so I had to take picture after picture to find one that would show up good and clear or work the stitch in another color so that it did show up clear. Note to self, next time stay with the plain colors, less work! Pattern 1: A simple seeding stitch of 3: Row 1: knit 1, purl 1, knit 1. Repeat this row for pattern. The yellow seeding stitch on the right is from the Beginner's Cabled Scarf and was used as an edging. http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2015/09/beginners-cabled-scarf-pattern-update.html. In this pattern I used it in the body of the shawl, several times just because I like the way the stitch looks so that I could split up other groups of stitches. Pattern 2 Moss and block This is the first time I have used this stitch, but it goes well with the seeding stitch I have used in other places on the shawl. And it does change after the 6th row, first block is knit, and the second block is a seed stitch, the third block is seeding again. See the picture. Then starting with the 7th, the first block is now the seeding, 2nd is knitted, and the third is seeding again. You can see this in the picture at the left. This pattern is worked over 18 stitches Row 1: knit 6, (k 1, p1, 3 x) knit 6. This is the front Row 2: purl 6, (p 1, k 1, 3 x) purl 6. Row 3: knit 6, (k 1, p1, 3 x) knit 6 Row 4: purl 6 (p 1, k 1, 3 x) purl 6. Row 5: knit 6, (k 1, p1, 3 x) knit 6. Row 6: purl 6 (p 1, k 1, 3 x) purl 6 Row 7: (k 1, p1, 3 x), knit 6, (k 1, p1, 3 x), Row 8: (p 1, k 1, 3 x,) purl 6 (p 1, k 1, 3 x,) Row 9: (k 1, p1, 3 x), knit 6, (k 1, p1, 3 x) Row 10: (p 1, k 1, 3 x) purl 6, (p 1, k 1, 3 x) Row 11: (k 1, p1, 3 x) knit 6, (k 1, p1, 3 x) Row 12: (p 1, k 1, 3 x) purl 6, (p 1, k 1, 3 x) Pattern 3 Cable. This pattern is worked over 10 stitches. For this cable stitch I used it on a background of 2 purl stitches on each side, for a total of 10 stitches and held the cable needle in front (left), the one on the right shows a cable stitch but with the cable needle held at the back like I did for the beginner’s cabled scarf (http://ninasatmyhouse.blogspot.com/2015/09/beginners-cabled-scarf-pattern-update.html) Row 1: knit 2, purl 6, knit 2 Row 2: purl 2, knit 6, purl 2 Row 3: knit 2, purl 6, knit 2 Row 4: purl 2, knit 6, purl 2 Row 5: knit 2, purl 6, knit 2 Row 6: purl 2, slip 3 stitches to the cable needle and hold at front of work, K 3, then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle, purl 2 Pattern 4 Twisted stitch ( 6 ) I love this stitch. Here I have worked it over 6 stitches, the knit stitch with the purl stitch on the right and left side really help the two twisted stitches in the middle to show up. Picture, close up of the two stitches twisted on the left, right shows all six stitches used. Most of the time, the twisted stitch is used with just purl on each side of it ROW 1: p 1, k 1, p 2, k 1, p 1. This is done every back row. ROW 2: k 1, p 1, skip 1 stitch, but DO NOT remove it from the left hand needle, knit the next stitch, the new loop is on the right hand needle, now knit the first stitch that you skipped, it is now on the right hand needle and just let the two stitches on the left hand needle drop., p 1, k 1. This is done every front row. Pattern 5 5 by 6 blocks This pattern is worked over 15 stitches. For this I used five stitches knit group, purl group, then another 5 knit, but changed the blocks every 6th row. Row 1: p 5, k 5, p 5 Row 2: k 5, p 5, k 5 Row 3: p 5, k 5, p 5 Row 4: k 5, p 5, k 5 Row 5: p 5, k 5, p 5 Row 6: k 5, p 5, k 5 Row 7: p 5, k 5, p 5 Row 8: k 5, p 5, k 5 Row 9: p 5, k 5, p 5 Row 10: k 5, p 5, k 5 Row 11: p 5, k 5, p 5 Row 12: k 5, p 5, k 5 Materials: 1 pair size 9 knitting needles 3 to 4 skeins Red Heart Super Saver 8oz. depending on the length you want. I used 4. 16 stitch markers Cable needle, I used a U shaped one, keeps the stitches from falling off the needle. Row counter, this is a must. Note: slip markers as you come to them. I have used them between the groups of stitches. Using 3 skeins of yarn should made it about 60 inches long, using 4 would make it about 72 inches long. Cast on 142 Set up row Row 1: k 3, pm, k 3, pm, k 18 pm, k 10, pm, k 6, pm, k 3, pm, k 15, pm, k 10, pm, k 6, pm, k 10, pm, k 15, pm, k 3, pm, k 6, pm, k 10, pm, k 18, pm, k 3, pm, 3. Rows: 2 to 6: knit Note: the first 3 stitches you will always knit, the next 3 are seeding stitches. This also are for the last 6 stitches, seed 3, knit 3. Reset row counter to 0. This is the third in our Salt in the Air shawl series eBook. On a recent trip to the coast, I watched as a sailboat caught the wind and skimmed across the water. Its billowing sail was breathtaking in its simplicity and clean lines. It inspired me to design something reflective of the elegance and ease it embodied. The minimalism of this design makes it versatile for many types of yarns and color combinations. The triangle shape makes it a stress-free knit and an elegant, versatile addition to any wardrobe. The shawl is worked mainly in stockinette stitch with some garter stitch accents. Directions are fully written and charted. Details: Skills Needed: Knit, purl, slip 1, M1, M1R, M1L. Update 19-05-2018 Thanks to my wonderful tester Noelene Sampey I was able to make a revised version of the Bergenia square. Be sure to get the latest version, which is number 3! ~~~~~~~~~~ Maybe you have come across Arietis? Well, Bergenia is her big sister! Although this pattern looks complex, it’s really easy to make and repetitive enough to make it a calming pattern to make. Each round is quite simple, but together and in combination with the ombre colours they form a lovely, hypnotic pattern. Both Arietis and Bergenia find their inspiration in the wonderful Nomad by Fate patterns of Martin Up North. This square measures 25 x 25 cm (10 x 10 inches) when it’s made in Scheepjes Colour Crafter, but it can easily be extended. You will need only small amounts of this yarn for one square. The stitches that are used are normal stitches like sc, hdc, dc, fpdc, fptr. You will also be making stitches in the back loops only. Nothing too hard! This pattern is available as an On Screen and a Printerfriendly version. You will recieve them both. The price of this pattern is equal to one skein of my favorite yarn (Scheepjes Catona) at my favorite yarn shop (CR Couture in Rhoon). So by donating this you will make both me and my yarn shop really happy! Have fun with Bergenia! Cindy
