Learning about Art History the hands on way! Roll-A-Haring is a game I use year after year and am always surprised at the response it gets from my students. I use this activity to introduce my Elementary Art students to the fun and simple style of, American Artist, Keith Haring. This is an interactive way for your students to explore his style and make choices about their own art based on his original works. Roll-A-Haring is wildly popular in my art room and I am confident your students will love it, too! This dice game was created from looking at original works by Keith Haring and all images were created by myself. The images were all created on the computer and are very high quality. I created this PDF worksheet to help students to think creatively, elaborate, and tell a story. I've used this when I taught in elementary (as young as kindergarten) and used it also in high school. There is no right or wrong answer and it is fun to see all the creative solutions that students come up with. My high school students taking the animation pathway especially liked this worksheet. We always share the results in class to see all the different solutions. I've included a blank sheet that you can have students create their own sheet and then switch with a partner and create a drawing from it. This adds a sense of challenge and game element to it. I don't like to use up much time in class explaining things. I just don't. I would rather a mad frenzy than a bunch of yawns. I find it tricky to gets kids warmed up to the art classroom at the beginning of the year. At the grand opening of the Painting Center this year, we began work on a 100 Color Challenge. My hope is that by working with a partner in this color exploration my students will discover new ways to create colors and use these in their paintings throughout the year. So far they are having a blast!
Challenge your kids to this engineering project and build an Eiffel Tower that's as tall as they are using building materials from around the house!
This game can be played individually or with a group of students (I usually give one dice per table...you can purchase big foam dice off of amazon for super cheap and they are not noisy!) They will take turns rolling and have to draw what they roll. The first roll they will draw whatever head goes with that number, second roll they will draw the body, and so on. This is a great game to play to give students different ideas of what kind of Jean-Michel Basquiat inspired monster/skeleton they want to draw! I noticed that 90% of my students always draw the exact same thing as my teacher sample for a project....this roll-a-basquiat game allows students to see more choices in front of them and give them different ideas. I use this as part of my Basquiat Abstract lesson. We paint an abstract background and then paint our creatures on top of it. Here are some different demo videos of projects you can use this with! Do you, too, have had that one annoying moment while sharpening a pencil when its shaved skin and its colorful flakes messed up the paper every time you tried to clean it up? You tried so hard to just keep the flakes away from the paper as to avoid making it stain free. But hats off to those artistic and ingenious heads who had their imaginative power to discover these borderline genius Pencil Shaving Art Examples. Pencil shaving inspiration could sometimes be the best embellishment for the drawing (such as the detailing of leaves completes a tree) or entirely a piece of pencil art.
