Introducing the Treasure of Lemon Brown short story unit! This complete unit is designed to help your students understand and appreciate the classic story by Walter Dean Myers. In this resource, you'll find a variety of activities that are designed to promote critical thinking and analysis. In The Treasure of Lemon Brown, your students will learn about the importance of holding on to the things that really matter. They'll follow the story of Greg Ridgemont, who discovers a treasure trove of meaning and value in an unlikely place. As they read, your students will be challenged to think about what their own personal treasures might be. With this short story unit, you'll have everything you need to help your students engage with the text and get the most out of their reading experience. From discussion questions to writing prompts, your students will have plenty of opportunities to explore the story in depth and make personal connections. Author Study At the beginning of the activity is a short paragraph that is intended to introduce the student to the author. Pre-reading activity Students will brainstorm the word treasure, setting the stage for the multiple meanings of the word in preparation for reading and getting the most out of the story. Stop N Jot This is a fabulous activity that helps keep students focused on the reading. There are two pages devoted to stop 'n jot. At the end of each reading page, students are to stop, think about what they've read and then jot down the main ideas, questions, thoughts and feeling they had as they read. Additionally, there is a space for students to sketch a picture to help them recall the story. Setting Setting plays an important role in any story. Students are asked to first write a description based on what they read, then draw a picture. Character Description To help students understand that character descriptions go beyond, 'What does the character look like?, have students pick either Greg Radley or Lemon Brown. Have them think about adjectives that describe the character, then write the description. Students should think about the character, what we know about them and how they would describe them to other people. Plot Diagram To continue building on literacy skills, a plot diagram is included. This could be used as an extension activity, whole class activity or independent work depending on the level of understanding your students have. Vocabulary Words Five words from the story have been selected for further study. The words were based on necessity of understanding the story and the likelihood of students seeing the word again in other readings. Students will find the words in the reading, research the definition, and use the word correctly within a sentence. Quotes It is within the writing that Greg learns his lesson. Four quotes have been chosen for students to analyze and further understand the meaning of Lemon's treasure. For an extension activity, you could have students pick a quote they feel was important to the message. Reader's Response A reflection question has been included to help students process the message of the story and develop their thinking about the topic. This is a great opportunity for a quick class discussion that goes beyond the text. Clarifying Questions Teach your students to think critically about the text by teaching them to question the text. The type of questions students ask should go beyond comprehension questions and therefore question stems have been provided for the student with room for them to develop their own critical thinking questions. The Treasure of Lemon Brown can be found in literature set textbooks. It is not yet in the public domain, so I am not able to include a copy with the product, however, the story can be found online here. Click here for a copy of the story.
