Linking up with The Lesson Plan Diva for this one... I'm sure most of you can relate, but I just have to say that I get sooooo excited when someone sees something on my blog and wants to use it or gives me a thumbs up for it. We all work so hard and I feel like Blogland gives us all a chance to make each other feel the love. Am I right? Okay so the number one thing I get requests for is my Ooops Behavior Log. I'm just going to go ahead and post everything I use for behavior purposes in my classroom and hopefully you can get some inspiration. If you are missing on font, or want some of the wording changed, just feel free to leave me a comment with your email. It's summer and sadly, I am still laid off so I have A LOT of time... Here is the behavior chart I laminate and hang. Just print them on to different colored paper. This is the infamous Ooops Log! Here is the weekly behavior notice I send home to parents. It took me a long time to figure out a way that I wouldn't have to write in the date... Headers and Footers! Each student gets one page. For example, Student A's name would be on page one, twice. Student B's name would be on page two, twice. (Each kid is getting their own page... is this making sense? Geeez it's been a long day) So I have 25 students and they each get their own page. I change the header to week 1's dates and then the footer to week 2's dates and then print. It works for me bc I don't have to do ANY writing this way. All I do is color in the kids suns. Also, I send these home on Thursday and the kiddos bring them back Friday, when their homework is due. I had a lot of these get lost over the weekend. Which actually leads me to my next reason why I love this layout... if someone loses it, I just quickly print them a new page and color it in then and there. No copy machine trip. A teaching friend found this contract online and I just did a little bit of moving around on it. (I wish I knew where it came from) For students that need a little more "attention" I use a daily behavior notice that I fill out several times throughout the day. I have only had to do this for about 4 students and it works well. Here is the daily in a template you can edit. (no pictures) And for all those amazing students that need a little note home... Again, let me know if you want some changes or for me to email it to you so you can make your own changes!
Picking a favourite resource is like picking a favorite song – there are SO many, and I love them for all kinds of different reasons (my favorite songs are probably Forever – Chris Brown and anything by Sam Smith, in case you were curious!). But there’s something special about my Affirmation Stations, and I think it’s not even about the resource itself – but it’s about the power that this gives the little learners who use it, the power of self-confidence and self-worth. Sorry to hit you with #allthefeels so early in the blog – but it’s true! Along with a growth mindset, helping your students to grow their self-esteem is one of the most impactful lessons you’ll teach, and will stay with them for years to come. MJLL BFF @msstokesclass has set up this gorgeous Affirmation Station for her third graders. So what is an Affirmation Station, anyway? Well friend, I’m *so* glad you asked. An affirmation is a short – but empowering – phrase. You know the song ‘I Am Woman’? Stay with me here – but if you can remember singing “I am strong, I am invincible,” these are perfect examples! Sing those lines enough times, and you can take on a-ny-thing. So, an Affirmation Station is all about creating an intentional space in your classroom that prompts your students to affirm themselves, and get that encouragement and support they so desperately need at this age. The best part of having an Affirmation Station set up, though? It’s available for students when they need it. This can be a really personal process for some students – and if they don’t want to share those affirmations with you? That’s totally okay! It’s giving them the space to explore their relationships with themselves that counts. I love how @sped.with.meag has created her own Affirmation Station with my Boho Rainbow editable labels! How do I go about setting an affirmation station up for my classroom? It is literally so easy to set up an Affirmation Station, that you can have one in your classroom by tomorrow! For such a small effort, you can have such a big impact. 1. Get your supplies One of the key components of your Affirmation Station is a full-length mirror! The idea is that as your students say or think their affirmations, they can be looking at (and connecting with) themselves. You’ll also need some paper or card to print out your affirmations. If you don’t have a laminator or you’re trying to cut down on laminating, opt for a thicker card stock so that your affirmations won’t curl. Then, assemble your usual classroom decor line up – scissors, tape or adhesive putty (we call it Blu Tack in Aus, but I actually have no idea what the US equivalent is!) – and you’re ready to go! 2. Create your affirmations Alright, you crafty teacher you! It’s time to get creative and think up some affirmations! Put yourself into your little learners’ shoes and think about how they might like to be described, or how they might like to feel about themselves. Listening to any positive feedback shared between students is always a great place to start (aside from being incredibly heart-melting!). Traits like “kind,” “valued,” “capable,” and “loyal” are awesome to include – you want any student to be able to read these and feel that they’re true. Next, you’ll want to pop these into a doc or Canva template, perhaps add some colors or graphics, the sky’s the limit, really! A lot of you have ended up customizing my Boho Rainbow Classroom Labels for your Affirmation Stations and they look inCREDible. @firstiefriends_ has created an amazing Affirmation Station with my Boho Rainbow editable labels – I love it so much, it’s on the product page on my website! Don’t forget to create a header that will sit on top of your mirror! This will work as the framing statement to kick off all the affirmations. I like to use “I am…” for this, so that the affirmations are coming from inside the student. You could also use “You are…” If you’d prefer to use a pre-made set of affirmations, I’ve got you covered! Check out my Modern Rainbow Affirmation Station. This is editable, by the way, so you can add in some of your own affirmations or change the language if you need to. 3. Assemble all your elements Now comes the exciting part – putting it all together! Print and cut out your affirmations, and place these around either long edge of your mirror. Finish it off with your header at the top. Now stand back, look in the mirror and take your Affirmation Station out for a test drive. Don’t be shy – teachers need a little self-love sometimes, too! 4. Introduce to your students, and watch the magic happen Let your students know why you’ve created the Affirmation Station, and encourage them to make it a part of their routine as they enter the classroom each morning. They can pick an affirmation that reflects how they’re feeling that day, or set it as a goal of how they want to be feeling at the end of it. They can share these with you, or keep them to themselves. But however your little learners choose to use this Affirmation Station, I promise that you’ll be able to tell when its magic starts working! @young.minds.bloom has put a botanical spin on her Affirmation Station! I love how she’s tied in the theme of personal growth. Tegan has used these editable labels to create her Botanical Themed Affirmation Station You’ll notice your students feeling more empowered, treating each other with respect and empathy, lifting each other up at every opportunity, and feeling more positive in the classroom environment. And teachers can definitely benefit from a daily dose of positivity, too! Looking for some Pre-made Affirmation Stations? Check out my range of pre-made Affirmation Stations in a variety of various classroom decor themes below! Have you implemented an Affirmation Station in your classroom? I’d love to hear about your experience and what changes you noticed in your students! Of course, I’d love to sticky beak at your classroom decor, too. Let me know in the comments or send me an email!

The first week is (almost) finished and I thought I’d share some of our highlights! It has been great getting to know my students, and I am looking forward to getting into even more routine next week. What did we do? Check it out… My goal for the first week of school is to start […]
In a previous post, I shared eight things a successful educator should never say. Admittedly, that is a negative way to think about the impact of words on teaching and learning. Why not consider what we should be saying more, I thought? So here goes. 1. "I believe in you." One of the most powerful things you can communicate is your belief and confidence in your students, and your colleagues for that matter. Sadly, too many students (and adults) struggle to believe in their own worth and ability. Above any curriculum outcome, we should strive to show our students their own worth and genius. Say to your students, "I believe in you. You are capable. You are important." via @AnnetteBreaux @ToddWhitaker 2. "I won't give up on you." When things are really tough, we all need someone to pick us up and be there for us. You can be that person for your students. Every kid needs an adult to fill the gap, a person who is older and wiser, someone they can borrow strength from until they have more of their own. You can be that person when you tell your students, "I won't give up on you." https://www.ted.com/talks/rita_pierson_every_kid_needs_a_champion?language=en 3. "I'm here to help." I strongly believe leaders are servants too. It doesn't matter what your position is in your school, if you have a desire to help others succeed, you can have great influence and make a huge impact. Clearly, you should stand ready to help each student in your classroom. But the most successful educators are ready to help every student in the building. And they use their influence to make the entire school a better place. 4. "I have time." Anyone feel pressed for time? Yes! We all do, and that's what makes this phrase so important. There are so many demands on our time we become conditioned to protect against anything taking an extra minute. Principals, protect your teachers' time. They need some margin so they feel like they can help each other or their students or a community cause. You can show what you value when you say, "I have time." 5. "Not yet." Help your students develop a growth mindset by using these two words. When a students says, "I can't" show them how everything changes when you think "I can't, yet." Instead of putting a grade on that paper filled with mistakes, simply write "not yet" and have your students keep working and revising. Remind your students that the expert in anything was once a beginner. Even Luke Skywalker struggled to become a Jedi. He had the force within him, just like our students have it in themselves to succeed. Thanks for sharing Steven Weber @curriculumblog 6. "Let's work together." When teachers, and parents, and students, community leaders work together it is powerful. No one ever accomplished anything completely on their own. Someone else always invested, even when it's not evident. When we build partnerships, everyone benefits. When teachers learn together, it has the power to improve teaching and as a result, improve student learning. 7. "Thank you." Two simple little words. Say them over and again. Be grateful. Our schools will be a better place. Our world will be a better place. 8. "I'm listening." Show them you are listening. Lean in. You can learn so much. Students have so much to say, so much to share, and they are waiting for someone to truly listen. Seek to understand and not just to reply. Say "I'm listening. Go on." Ask questions. Show the patience and the empathy you know they need. 9. "What if?" We need more innovative thinking in classrooms and schools. 'What if' is the language of the dreamers and the disrupters. We don't have to do it the way it's always been done. What if we tried something different? 10. "What is best for kids?" As we make tough decisions, we should always be asking this question. Schools exist to serve students and should do their best to always put the best of interest of students first. It's a simple question, but we need to hear it more. It's too easy for other things to distract us from the most important thing in our schools, serving our students best. Question: What else should educators be saying more often? Leave a comment or share on Twitter and Facebook.
As a teacher, I tend to spend as much, if not more, of my waking hours in the classroom as I do in our own home. As much as I love being able to rehearse in the auditorium itself, much of the time it is necessary for my students and I to remain in the theatre classroom. For this reason, it is important that when decorating the theatre classroom, we make it a comfortable place for me the teacher and a welcoming place for my students.

These are often the learners coming up with new invention ideas, filling up a journal with intricate comic book drawings, and eager to answer all of your questions in class. With that said, learners with ADHD can struggl

Have you heard of classrooms having food carts or coffee businesses but don't know how to get one started? Here is how we run the food cart at our school. We start off every school year with free samples...this is how we get everyone hooked. We set up a station in the front office and send out an email letting everyone know. We also put out a food donation sign up sheet in case anyone wants to donate store bought or homemade goodies. This is what our food cart looks like today but this is not where we started :). When we first started we had our local grocery store donate coffee, teachers donated snacks and we had a tiny cart. After a few years, grants and donations I can say we have a pretty awesome little business. The purpose of the food cart is for our students to develop and practice skills in the following areas: social norms, communication, money and team building. We take the cart out every Wednesday and Friday. I work in a pretty large school (800 students) so we have 6 special education teachers in my building. Out of that, 4 of us manage the food cart. We have a group of students who price and stock it, we have a group that works with a teacher on ordering, I make the coffee (which is funny because I am the only one who doesn't drink it) and another teacher handles all of the money. We are so fortunate to have had this awesome coffee maker and carafes donated. It's super easy. I my amazing paras plug it in and wait for it to heat up. Once it's ready we pop the coffee in, put the carafe under and pour in the pitcher of water. In about 3 minutes we have perfectly brewed coffee. I store all of the coffee next to the maker on my counter. They are usually large bags so I make sure to secure them with binder clips so the coffee doesn't taste stale.....had that complaint once 😁. We also got a HUGE thing of coffee filters 2 years ago and we haven't purchased any since. I honestly think we will be set for 3-4 more years lol. I change out the labels for the carafes when needed. We don't do anything fancy here, just computer paper, marker and masking tape. I am sure you could get a little more creative here if you wanted to :) We also have all of these yummy snacks and drinks on the cart. We price everything for $1.00 (coffee is $0.75) to make the change making process easier. If you have students with higher level math skills play around with the prices to make it more challenging for your kids. This cash register is a new addition this year. It has been great to store money in it (we used to put it in a coffee cup) and use the calculator portion. Now that the coffee is made and the cart is stocked we are ready to take it out. I have a few students who need walkers to get around. The cart is PERFECT for them to push :) The students take the cart from classroom to classroom. This is where the magic happens!!! All of my students who take the cart out are non-verbal. They have gained so many skills through this process. They knock on the door and use the pre-made communication device. Check it out here. We used GoTalk Lite to create these. That is why we have a British accent for our boys...if you pay for it there are many voice options. The teachers then come out and tell the kids what they would like. Depending on what the kids are working on they will take over the order (getting coffee, making change, finding the items, talking with the staff member etc.). The coffee cart has been AWESOME!!! for the students and staff at my school. Here are a few testimonials from staff members at my school. "I love having the food cart come by, not because of the food ( though it's good) the best part is seeing students learn how to work with money and help others. The staff that works with these students are so patient." "I love the food cart for various reasons. Not only do we get a nice little surprise visit for a delicious snack, but it's so nice to see our students leading within this initiative. Whether asking if we are interested or handling money and selling items, students are in charge of the sales and exhibit leadership qualities and handle the responsibilities wonderfully. My students also enjoy having them stop by. It gives us a brief moment to stop, visit, extend our hellos, and share in a brief, yet kind moment of interaction that we normally don't get to share within the hectic school day. It's a moment where students get to see how we can support one another and help each other's causes just by purchasing a small item. I love it." "I love the food cart because I like seeing my former students and interacting with them. It's fun to see their social progress." "I love the interactions and real-life application these students receive when working/learning with the food cart." "It is a very positive learning tool for everyone!" We use the money that we earn from the coffee cart to purchase more items. It is all self funded. If we have money at the end of the year we put enough aside to place the first order for the next year and then all of the left over money we use to put into other projects at our school (kids needing coats, Christmas gifts, toiletries for students etc.). I have found that running the cart the way we do is super simple. There isn't much that goes into it (once you have it up and running). At the end of the year we also have a MONSTER SALE to get ride of everything. The teachers LOVE this. Follow my blog with Bloglovin

This activity is great for morning work for the beginning of the school year! ...
I'm already thinking about my next class. Just out 4 days, but before you know it Aug. 12 will be here. I'm thinking about the first few weeks. 1. Will teach strategies, etc from the class reading Charlotte's Web together. It's a great character study, story elements, and writing mentor text. I will need to order a few more from Scholastic. I think I'll use bonus points. 2. I will be using specifically made vocabulary notebooks (in the past I've just used composition notebooks). I'm still trying to decide if I'll make one for each quarter or for each unit in our reading series. 3. Practicing procedures and learning the rules will take more time this year. I usually practice a few days and then think they have it...only to regret my decision later. 4. Will have morning work for students to do that come early...just not sure what(maybe a spelling city activity in the computer lab since my room is next door). In the past I've just had them read...but some are good about this activity, but not all. 5. Am I the only one who can't get out of their teacher mode? Help!!
