Time to get creative!
Time to inspire and motivate your students with these 4 fun bulletin board ideas that are perfect for schools, classrooms, or libraries!
If you’re midway through your summer break, I hope this finds you with a cocktail or mocktail in hand! But if you’re anything like me, you’re probably also starting to dream about what next year will look like. So today I’m sharing five of the best classroom themes you need on your Pinterest board. And don’t worry if it hasn’t crossed your mind yet, I’ve got you covered! Start With a Colour Scheme There are endless options when it comes to choosing a theme - but I see themes a little differently than some of the ideas you see on Pinterest. Rather than choosing an alliterative theme based on my name, like ‘Miss Jacobs’ Giraffes’ or ‘Chantelle’s Sharks’ I tend to start with an overall colour palette. It all starts with colour! Starting with a colour palette in mind means your theme is broad and can flex with the seasons throughout the school year. You can easily carry a colour palette through your different lessons, occasions, communications and displays, without having to hunt too hard for niche graphics and decor. (Thank goodness too - I’m sure there’s no such thing as good giraffe decor!). Take Cues From Home Decor Once I’ve chosen a colour palette, I then enable my Target addiction and have a little scroll through what’s new in their homewares section. It’s like a sampling platter of the latest trends and I find it sparks all kinds of ideas. (Tell me I’m not the only person to find Target inspiring!). Bigger home decor items help embed a theme with little effort - consider rugs, storage carts and bulletin boards for displaying student work. While I try not to buy too much, each year I grab a few things that I’d be happy to bring home after the school year is out. 1. Neutrals Classroom Theme Pinterest-Worthy Classroom Theme 1 The first Pinterest-worthy classroom theme is all about neutrals - think taupes, beige tones and lots of organic textures. This palette would pair best with my Spotty Neutrals, Boho Vibes, Earthy Rainbow and Boho Plants ranges. Here’s a perfect example of pinterest-worthy neutrals mixed with Boho Vibes lettering display and editable posters from @miss_grosse_! Products that will help you achieve this look: 2. Plant and Greenery Classroom Theme Pinterest-Worthy Classroom Theme 2 Next up - we have a green and neutral palette. Plants are huge right now - which feels like a funny thing to say, but it’s true! Mixing natural green tones with earthy neutrals feel fresh, modern and relaxing. This colour palette pairs best with my Boho Plants and Botanical ranges. Here’s a gorgeous example of earthy goodness from @teachingwithmissblechynden. Stunning! Products that will help you achieve this look: 3. Pastels Classroom Theme Pinterest-Worthy Classroom Theme 3 A pastel theme is always popular and for good reason! It’s calming, pretty and there are so many sweet office supplies and decor items available in pastels. If you want to be pedantic (*cough* like me), aim for pastels with a cool base or a warm base, rather than mixing both. It just ties everything together. The best MJLL items for a pastel theme are definitely the Spotty Pastels and Modern Rainbow ranges. A fantastic illustration of how pastel themes come to life with decor, from @teachingwithmissburford. Products that will help you achieve this look: 4. Rainbow Classroom Theme Pinterest-Worthy Classroom Theme 4 Rainbow themes are pure fun - almost anything goes! My tips is to choose a select number of colours so it’s not too overwhelming. And embrace clashing patterns! Modern hues of navy, mustard and burgundy are fun, but then again, classic primary colours always will work too! I’d recommend my Spotty Brights or Tropical ranges for a rainbow theme. Check out this stunning Rainbow theme created using my Spotty Brights Affirmation Station and vibrant rainbow classroom decor, from @missj_primary_teacher. Products that will help you achieve this look: 5. Earthy Classroom Theme Pinterest-Worthy Classroom Theme 5 And finally - an earthy palette with rich berry hues, mustards, brick colours and emeralds gives a lovely lush aesthetic. And you’ll have plenty of MJLL themes to pair it with - my Spotty Neutrals, Boho Vibes, Earthy Rainbow and Boho Plants ranges all work with this colourway. How good are the earthy vibes in @teachingwithmissamanda’s dreamy classroom? Products that will help you achieve this look: One Last Thought Now I’m the first to admit that Pinterest doesn’t always represent the reality of our classrooms. In fact, it rarely does! So BFFs, let’s just agree to take Pinterest for what it is - a huge collection of ideas and inspiration. Our classrooms will always be busier, noisier and messier than those perfect pins we see, and that’s more than okay. If our students are happy, safe and learning - that’s all that matters! There are thousands of ideas on my Pinterest, so I humbly recommend you make the most of my addiction! And once you’ve landed on the colour scheme for you next classroom, make sure you head to my website to see which of my collections and resources will compliment it best. If you have any questions - I’m always here to help!

Have you ever walked into a classroom that was so visually overwhelming it made your head spin? From bright colors to busy patterns, classroom decorations can either enhance or hinder student learning. But did you know that a calming environment can actually have a positive impact on academic performance? Studies have shown that the right classroom decorations can reduce stress, improve focus, and even encourage creativity. SPOILER: I've included a link to a set of FREE calming classroom posters at the end of this post! Let's delve into the science behind calming classroom decorations, see how to create a calming environment, and explore the benefits of incorporating natural elements into your classroom décor. Research has shown that a calming classroom environment can have a positive impact on student academic performance. But what exactly is the science behind it? According to a study by the University of Salford, the physical characteristics of a classroom can impact student learning by up to 25%. This includes factors such as lighting, temperature, and yes, even decorations. A calm and organized classroom can help reduce stress levels and improve concentration, making it easier for students to retain information. By incorporating natural elements and soothing colors, teachers can create a calming atmosphere that reduces stress and improves academic performance. Calming decor in a classroom isn't just about adding a few plants or muted colors. It's about creating an overall environment that fosters a sense of safety, comfort, and tranquility for students. To achieve this, teachers can take a few simple steps such as decluttering the classroom, utilizing natural light, and rearranging furniture to create a more spacious and open feel. Simple changes like these can go a long way in promoting relaxation and focus in students. By creating a calming environment, teachers can set their students up for success. A calming classroom environment can be achieved through various design strategies. Among these, color psychology plays a critical role in creating a soothing and relaxing space for students. Soft pastel shades of pink and purple are also known to create a calming effect and promote feelings of comfort and security. Certain colors such as blue and green have been found to evoke feelings of calmness, tranquility, and focus, making them ideal for classroom decorations. On the other hand, bright and bold colors such as red and orange can have the opposite effect and induce feelings of stress, anxiety, and restlessness. While these colors may be appropriate in some contexts, they are best avoided in a classroom environment where relaxation and focus are essential for learning. By understanding the principles of color psychology, teachers can choose the right decorations and color schemes for their classroom to create a calming and conducive learning environment. To create a calming classroom environment, choosing the right decorations is crucial. As discussed earlier, soft and muted colors are ideal for promoting relaxation and concentration, while bright and bold colors should be avoided. When selecting decorations, it is important to keep the overall color scheme in mind and ensure that it complements the calming atmosphere. Nature-inspired decorations can be an excellent choice for a calming classroom. Elements such as plants, natural textures, and landscapes can create a soothing environment and promote feelings of well-being. Additionally, incorporating elements of nature into your classroom can inspire curiosity and promote learning about the world around us. Here are some calming classroom design mood boards to get you inspired... Plants, natural textures, and landscape-inspired decor can help create a relaxing atmosphere that promotes concentration and well-being. Adding plants to your classroom not only enhances its aesthetic appeal, but it also helps purify the air and promotes a healthy environment. You can choose plants that are easy to care for, such as spider plants, peace lilies, or succulents. Hanging or mounting them on walls or placing them on desks or shelves can create a sense of natural beauty and relaxation. Textures such as wood, woven materials, or natural fibers can provide a tactile feel that adds warmth and depth to your classroom. Using earthy and calming tones such as blues, greens, and browns can contribute to a soothing atmosphere, while pops of brighter colors can add interest and stimulate creativity. Landscape-inspired decorations can also promote a love for the environment and inspire curiosity about the world around us. Maps, photographs, or posters of nature scenes can immerse students in a world beyond the classroom, encouraging them to learn more about different cultures and ecosystems. An easy way to add calm décor to your classroom is to start with your own teacher desk. By thoughtfully selecting natural supplies for your desk, you can set the tone for a calming work environment. Here are some examples... Plant /// Botanical Mousepad /// Pencil Holder Organizer /// Highlighters /// Lesson Planner /// Desk Calendar /// Desktop Organizer /// Desk Lamp /// Free Teacher Positive Affirmation Cards /// Stapler ----------------------------------------------- In short, the science of calming classroom decorations shows that a well-thought-out and organized classroom environment can have a significant impact on student learning. By incorporating natural elements and soothing colors, teachers can create a calming atmosphere that reduces stress and improves academic performance. So...what do you think? Creating a calm classroom environment is more important than ever. Since classrooms can be such a busy place, many of our students (and their teachers) long for a serene environment that calms their senses. That's why I thought I'd put together a series of classroom design mood boards filled with ways to create a calming classroom environment. You'll find that the mood boards include muted colors, flexible seating, lighting alternatives, cozy textures, and motivational messages. The idea is to create a space that helps students feel calm and ready to learn. I have even more classroom decor ideas in this FREE Back to School Guide for teachers. Grab it here. Each mood board is meant to create a relaxed and serene learning environment. You'll even notice that the mood boards have some common elements. For instance, most mood boards include... A classroom rug - Even in a middle school classroom, a rug is one of the quickest ways to make your classroom more appealing. Once the rug is in your classroom, you can use it for class meetings, a work area, a comfy reading corner, a space for partners to work together...the options are endless! Fun classroom chairs - I love the idea of including at least two chairs in the classroom. In my own classroom, the special chairs were part of my homework incentive program. Students worked all week long to complete their homework so that they could sit in the special chair. But, chairs are also great for flexible seating options, spaces for partners or groups to work together, a "sharing" chair, and so much more! Hanging decor - Whether it's a fun banner, paper lanterns, tissue paper poofs, or 3-D shapes, an inexpensive and fun way to decorate the classroom is with something that you can hang. Imagine displaying your banner along a bulletin board or chalkboard. Or, perhaps you can string the lights in front of your teacher desk. The options are endless and the impact is huge. Here's a tip: once you find the hanging decor you like, purchase several of them. Having multiple sets will have more of an impact. Quote Poster - There's nothing better than a little inspiration in the classroom. So, each mood board includes a quote poster. These are great to hang on your classroom door, at the front of the classroom, or even in the center of a bulletin board. If you're up for it, I'd suggest getting the posters in the biggest size possible. The bigger the poster, the more classroom real estate it will take up, and the quicker your classroom will be designed. A lamp - If you're looking to change the feel of your classroom, a lamp will do it! Whether it's a floor lamp that you can place on your rug with the chairs or a table lamp that you can set out on your desk, there's just something so cozy about lamps! If you'd like, you can even purchase a couple of lamps to spread out around the classroom. Then, you can make it a habit to turn off those florescent overhead lights...what a difference! Storage baskets - What's a classroom without storage, right? Well, if you're thinking of getting storage containers, I've included a few inspiration pieces on each design board. Fun design elements - You'll find unique elements on each design board, too. Those have been added to provide even more fun ideas to tie in your classroom theme. About the classroom decor items: The items that I've placed on the mood boards are selected with a teacher's budget in mind. That means that I really tried my best to ensure that the items were reasonably prices. Oh, and since they're sourced from Amazon, there's a chance that you'll be able to put some of the elements on a school purchase order. Of course, the mood boards are mainly intended for inspiration. However, if you do want to learn more about each of the items, just click the links provided. Alright, are you ready to set up a calm classroom? Then, check out the classroom design mood boards. If you'd like to learn more about any of the items, just click on the links below the mood boards. My newest classroom decor in the modern decor line is Modern Pop of Color! I came up with the idea when I was wanting to create decor that would match my anchor chart and poster resources, as well as a set that would go with anything that you already had. That's the great thing about rainbow...you can incorporate just about any color. I was walking one day, trying to think of a good name for this set, and was listening to my favorite pop playlist. The idea of Modern Pop of Color came to me, so I knew I had to incorporate some of my favorite pop songs into the decor somehow. It's just a really fun set that I think you AND your students will love. I tried to keep it simple and modern, but also student friendly. I have lots of photos below just so you can get an idea of how to set it up in your own classroom, but feel free to put your own touch on it! Let's take a look! This post may contain affiliate links at no extra cost to you. Like I said earlier, you can make this set match just about anything you already have. Since there are a lot of colors, I would go simple on the backgrounds and borders. I like to be cohesive around the whole classroom. Only use one background on all of your bulletin boards if you want to do that. I think a solid black, white, or brown would look really great with this set. This painted dots background is also a fun option that goes really well. Again, be consistent and simple with your borders. What color are you really wanting to bring out? Maybe you want lots of pinks, so choose a plain pink border to use all around your room. To add more dimension, do an additional black or white boarder around the outside of your boards. The best part of the whole classroom decor set is these motivational posters! I tried to choose pop songs that everyone knows, especially lots of Harry Styles and Taylor Swift! Wouldn't it be fun to have these playing on the first day when your students come in?! Just make sure it's the clean version...lol. I know there are lots of Swifties around here, so if you are really wanting to bring her out in your decor, I would print these as posters. I give directions on how you can do that in the pack, or you can have them enlarged at an office store or on your school's poster maker if they have one. When you go to decorate your boards, I would use more of the pink and purple pennants and borders to tie it all in. The different color letters on these posters will also help tie in all of the rainbow colors from the rest of the set. I designed the posters so that you could create a gallery wall with them. Another option would be to print them as large posters and then use border around them to give them a framed look. This would be great for those large empty spaces on your classroom walls. I always begin my classroom decor sets with the alphabet first. I have always used this as the focal point of my classroom. I am in love with this set and the colors! I changed them about twenty times trying to get the most calming, modern rainbow combination. I have included different options, including a set with handwriting lines and a cursive set. There are also large letters in the pack that I plan to show more about on my Instagram showcasing a fun wall idea you could make in your classroom. Using pennants is one of my favorite, cheap hacks to decorate a classroom. They are always so fun and whimsical, and they can help tie everything in your classroom together. I put them in all kinds of places, from my easel to lining the bottom of shelves. Notice how the border above matches the bulletin board paper..keep it cohesive. You get editable versions of most of the components in the pack. I know we all organize these drawers differently, so you can either use mine or create your own. There are editable binder covers with each of the colors from the rainbow that you can design to fit your needs. Let's talk labels! I label EVERYTHING! This helps me and my students stay organized all throughout the year. Everything has a place. I always get my ribbon and twine at Hobby Lobby when it's half off. They have the best options and prices. I wouldn't choose more than two kinds. I also like to use really thick ribbon on the larger storage to make it pop. There are two different supply label options...round rainbow and square/rectangular white. The ones students will use all have clip art on them for the little ones. I did the white option in case it bothered you if the labels weren't in rainbow order. I know that I am crazy like that, so I figured there were more like me out there...lol. The white also helps break up all the color a little bit. There are editable versions included of all of the labels in the set. There are large round table signs, as well as rectangular ones for table caddies included. You could hang the round ones or attach them to large baskets on the tables. I like to put picture books inside at the beginning of the year for early finishers. I included a few of these letter sets to put around your room that say READ, MAGIC, LEARN, and BE KIND. The classroom library labels are all themed. There are also blank ones for those themes you might have that I didn't include. There are rainbow student numbers that you can attach to their book bins. The calendar and number of the day set includes everything you need for that part of your day. I have always used hand signals in my classroom, and it just helps so much. There is so much more in the classroom decor set that you don't see here, so please download the preview to see more on the TPT listing. If you decide to decorate your classroom with Modern Pop of Color, I would LOVE to see it! Just send me pics by DM or tag me on Instagram. Have so much fun decorating your classroom, and let me know if you have any questions!

One of the most magical parts about teaching is being able to foster a love of reading amongst your students! Before they get into later years where reading might lose some of its joy (uni, I’m looking at you here!), a love of books helps not only to improve literacy but to encourage imaginative play, too. If you haven’t yet got a library section in your classroom, or your current book nook just isn’t working how you imagined it would, then read on, friend! I’ve popped together some tips on how to organize your classroom library to minimize headaches and maximize reading for your students. A quick note – these are only tips! Please know there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ when it comes to your library set up, it’s completely up to you to decide what will work best for your students. My BFF @lololoveslearning blew me away when she revealed her new library set up in her classroom! Using my Bulletin Board Lettering Pack and Editable Boho Rainbow Classroom Labels. What is a classroom library? A classroom library is a great resource for your little learners to be able to directly interact with books on a day-to-day basis! Promoting literacy skills, a classroom library is usually a collection of books, magazines and any other literary resources that are tailored to your students’ general reading level and interests. Covering the spectrum of fiction and non-fiction, a classroom library is a helpful tool for teachers to incorporate into their lesson plans to encourage enthusiastic, motivated readers! What is the benefit of a classroom library? Outside of providing direct support to your literacy lessons, having a library in your classroom serves multiple other purposes! It helps your little learners to learn about the concept of libraries and how they operate; it provides directly accessible resources for any students who want to engage in extra reading outside of lessons; it allows you to incorporate individual and group reading into your curriculum; and it gives students the opportunity to read across a range of topics and genres that might interest them, regardless of what their home situation might look like! Where to set up your classroom library The first thing you’ll need to do when creating your library space is work out where you’ll put it! This might be impacted by the grade you teach, or the personalities of your students. If you’ve got younger kids who are just starting out on their reading journey – then having the library up front might work better with your lesson plans, where you can involve lots of students at once. If your kids are a little older, then a library towards the back of the classroom or in a corner might be a better spot, as they can retreat there and read quietly without disrupting the other kids. How to set up your classroom books Once you’ve settled on a spot, it’s time to think about the library system you want to implement in your classroom! I tend to see teachers go down one of two paths – using book bins to group books by theme or author surname initial; or emulating a traditional library set up, organizing books with the spine facing outwards and ordered by author that way. Depending on the types of books you have and how old your kids are? I like the spine-out method, because it helps your students to prepare for the experience of going to a real library! Especially if you have some real bookworms in your class, they’ll love being able to walk into their local public or council library and find more books to read. @the_taylored_teacher’s book bins look great! I love how she’s labelled them using my round Boho Rainbow editable classroom labels. Just make sure you help to make the process a little less overwhelming, and signpost everything super clearly with some classroom library labels. This creates an easy-to-follow system to support your little learners as they become familiar with the WIDE, wide range of books that are out there! This Boho Rainbow Classroom Labels pack comes with three different sizes of classroom library labels – round, large tray size and a medium version to get your library looking organized (and beautiful, too). If you’re starting out with picture books, the spines on those bad boys might not quite be thick enough to use this system, ha! Combining the two systems can work really well here – use editable classroom labels to create an organization system based on author name (e.g. books with authors whose surnames begin with A through G go into one bin; H through N and so on). As a general rule of thumb, no matter what system you go for, I recommend splitting out fiction from non-fiction. @acraftyteach took her set up to the next level! I love the idea of a Reading Garden, that she created using my Modern Boho Vibes Bulletin Board Lettering Pack. Where can I get books for my classroom library? If you’re setting up your first-ever library for your class, sourcing books can be a challenge – particularly on a teacher budget! Here are a few cost-effective places to look for books: Facebook Marketplace Thrift stores like Goodwill/Salvation Army Garage sales eBay/Amazon Friends and family Time to decorate your classroom library with editable classroom labels Now that your books are all sorted, you can get stuck into the fun part – decorating your classroom library however you want! A quick note to say that if you don’t want to decorate this space, or have a classroom library theme that’s a-okay too. A great tip if your classroom doesn’t already have them is to install bulletin boards on the walls around your dedicated library nook. This way, it’s super easy to create and change displays over time based on what you’re learning that term; or just rotate through some inspirational quotes to accompany your little learners on their reading journey! My Bulletin Board Lettering Pack is filled with editable classroom labels with a variety of different styles of lettering to choose from – just type in your text, print and voila! You can create just about any space you want to with these, you’re only limited by your own imagination. And that’s it! I hope you feel a little more confident to tackle creating and organizing a library in your own classroom. And if you do? I’d love to see how your library comes to life! Make sure you tag me over on Instagram so I can see. Let me know in the comments if you have any other tips on how to organize your classroom library, as I’m sure our community would love your advice!
