HOW-TO: Build a Chic Wardrobe on an Entry-Level Salary The following is an excerpt from The Career Code: Must-Know Rules for a Strategic, Stylish, and Self-Made Career by Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power. When cash is tight, the last thing you want to spend money on is work clothes, especially when there’s a world of other things that require your hard-earned cash. Fortunately, you can still make your student-loan payments, have dinner with your friends, and look on point for work—all you need is a foolproof shopping plan. Before you buy, ask yourself if you can wear it to work and on the weekend. The idea is to train yourself to look for truly versatile pieces. In a perfect world, you’d be able to think of three places you could wear every item you buy (triple bonus points if you can come up with both professional and off-duty occasions) AND three things you already own to wear it with. If you run this exercise when you’re shopping, you’ll end up with a closet full of pieces that A) work well together and B) are appropriate for a range of events. The goal is to move beyond a “work wardrobe” and a “life wardrobe” to one fully integrated closet. Know what’s difficult to mimic inexpensively, and stay away from it. In general, animal prints, embellishments, and hardware are all tough to create at a lower price point, so stay away from these on clothing and accessories. Other classic prints like polka dots and stripes—are often easy to find executed smartly on affordable items, so look for these patterns instead. Natural materials look more expensive than synthetic ones. Linen T-shirts, tweed jackets, and cotton button-down shirts are all key items to have in your wardrobe and are available at budget-friendly prices. That said, certain semisynthetics—like viscose, a version of rayon—look pricey and polished. High-end designers use them all the time, so there are some exceptions to that rule. Buy an inexpensive item and have it tailored to your body. This one is for all you sales shoppers! Just because a designer piece is on sale doesn’t mean you should automatically buy it, especially if it doesn’t fit you perfectly. If it does fit you perfectly, go right ahead and purchase it! If it doesn’t fit you perfectly, but it’s a major deal and you have enough in your budget left over to tailor it to perfection, go right ahead and purchase it! But if neither scenario is happening, it’s better to buy something that’s less expensive and fits you properly or to use the money you saved for a great tailoring job. Our rule of thumb is to buy something that fits the biggest part of your body perfectly, and then have the rest tailored. That said, certain alterations are easy and inexpensive—like taking in or slightly expanding the waistband on a skirt or hemming a pair of pants—while others are not worth the time and money. Figure out what YOUR staples are and stick to them. While there are a handful of universal wardrobe staples, the pieces that are essential for your best friend won’t necessarily be essential for you. It all depends on your body, lifestyle, and personal style. So while pencil skirts and oversize double-breasted blazers might be staples for one person, your version might be cropped tailored pants and shrunken leather jackets. The point is to identify the key silhouettes and styles that make you feel polished and professional and focus on finding them, rather than chasing every trendy new silhouette or investing in a girly dress, only to realize that’s not really your thing. Shop smarter by paying attention to sale schedules. There’s a season for everything, including sales, and knowing these seasons allows you to shop a little smarter. In addition to the big annual sales—after Christmas, around major national holidays—there are key months to buy certain pieces. For more information on The Career Code, click here.
