Flow blue antique English heavy Ironstone extra large platter 18.5" x 15", cobalt blue unique floral vivid pattern, gilded rim c.1870 chic decor for any house but farmhouse in particular. If you are blue and white china admirer as myself, you'll love this new item in my shop as it has got everything: size, age (very well preserved for it), quality, gorgeous pattern and amazing cobal blue vivid pattern around the wide rims. I was trying to make my research of the backstamp but couldn't come across anything, which would give me a precise clue about the maker of this stunning piece so process is ongoing and will update you with more information when I am more sure. Backstamp itself is a bit too "flow blue" but it is a sign of antique china. It is extremely high quality and has embossed marking as well as backstamp itself, which suggests once again the antique age of it. Natural minor crazing is present also, which supports the idea about antique age of it. Gulding is rubbed off slightly along the rim, but about 90% of it remains in tact. Observers eyes will be drawn to the floral blue pattern and gold rim doesn't influence impact that much actually. Nevertheless, it has got beautiful appearance and will appeal to blue and white pottery lovers. I shall update better images as bright day is needed for good images in natural light to show it in it's best. I absolutely adore it by seeing and admiring a real thing. I am always willing as always to answer your questions and supply you with additional images if needed but take my word for it YOU'LL ADORE IT !!!
Purple printed sheet pattern jug with added color, ca. 1845/Notice the molded face on the spout According to The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880, a sheet pattern is "A pattern which repeats the same motifs all over so that it can be used on any shape without engraving several different copper plates. These designs are sometimes referred to as all-over patterns. For reasons of simplicity and economy the technique was very commonly used for toy dinner services." I am going to add jugs and other items intended for adults. What you see above are three sides of a purple printed jug that illustrate how a sheet pattern can accommodate hollow items. There is no need for any careful placement of the pattern. The photo below shows how a sheet pattern, "Dragon," can accommodate items of different shapes and sizes. See how the same "Dragon" pattern was used on different sizes and shapes. The bowl is 10 inches in diameter, the tray is 11 inches wide and the cup plate is 3.5 inches (only room for one dragon). Because many of the patterns are floral, they are also referred to as chintz patterns. Some of the pattern names actually use the word "chintz." "Royal Chintz" by Zachariah Boyle & Son (1823-1850) and "Victoria Chintz" maker unknown Here are a few more lovely sheet patterns on jugs. Sheet, all over or chintz pattern jugs There is an excellent post about sheet patterns in Pam Woolliscroft's Spode History blog. Pam illustrates and lists many Spode sheet patterns, including Sunflower (also known as Convolvulus). She says: "Some of the designs from Spode were known as sheet patterns. A sheet pattern is a design which is not engraved to specifically ‘fit’ different objects. Perhaps only three or four engravings are needed for a whole range of tableware and toilet ware." Spode "Sunflower" pattern (also known as Convolvulus) 18.75 inch platter/Notice that there is no need for an extra transfer for the border as the pattern covers the whole platter. Another sheet pattern is Grape. Spode made this pattern, but the one below is from an unknown factory. "Grape" pattern platter by an unknown maker Or this stunning early Minton sheet pattern platter. Minton sheet pattern 20.5 inches by 16 inches platter. The pattern is known as Star. Since sheet patterns were less expensive to make, they were often used on children's items. Doll plates, 3.25 inches. Notice how the pattern has the same elements, but placement is different on each plate. And for very large utilitarian items. The bath jug is 18 inches to the top of the handle and 33 inches in diameter at its largest point. The small jug is 8.25 inches to the top of the handle. The bath jug has an extra handle (known as a lug handle) because of its weight when filled with water. Items with sheet patterns may have been less expensive to make, but they lost nothing in beauty. Product Description Brand: Kosta Boda Color: Blue Features: Kosta Boda Contrast dish; 13-3/4-inch diameter Lead-free crystal handcrafted by master glassmakers in Sweden Designed by Swedish artist Anna Ehrner Hand-applied color makes each piece unique Available in 4 colors: lime, blue, white, black Item Dimensions: Height 15″ x Width 0″; Weight 6.6Lbs. Made in Turkey Details: Amazon.com A true work of art, the Contrast dish marries abstraction and down-to-earth solidity. Each handmade crystal bowl encloses smoky wisps of either black, white, cobalt blue, or lime green. Seemingly draped across the surfaces are thin strings of complementary colored glass for contrast, lending a playful air. Significantly sized at 13-3/4 inches in diameter, the shallow dish looks superb displayed on a table, in a hutch, or on a sideboard filled with fresh fruit. Matching bowls are also available. Because the color is hand-applied at the Kosta Boda glassworks in Sweden, no two pieces are exactly the same. Contrast is a creation of Swedish artist Anna Ehrner, known for her strong, pure forms infused with swirls or lines of color. Ehrner has been designing for Kosta Boda since 1974, experimenting with everything from jewelry to stemware. Each glass piece arrives in a Kosta Boda box, signifying the highest artistry in both design and implementation. Washing the lead-free crystal by hand is recommended. –Ann Bieri From the Manufacturer About the Designer: “Our life blood,” says designer Anna Ehrner, “is the creative process that takes place in the blowing room.” Born in 1948, Ehrner has been retained by Kosta Boda since 1974 and maintains a studio at Kosta glassworks. Experimental in style, Ehrner’s work is distinguished by simple yet powerful shapes and an ability to achieve shimmering displays by using color in subtle ways. For her, the final objective is almost always a synthesis between practical utility and elegant design, even though the final piece may be years in the making. Ehrner takes inspiration from nature–the lagoons of the Pacific, the northern lights–and veils of color inside the crystal have also become something of a trademark in her art glass. She is the originator of sales successes such as the Line glasses and the Atoll series of bowls. About the Kosta Boda: With characteristic craftsmanship and good design, Kosta Boda has become one of the leading glasshouses in the world. The company’s three glassworks in the villages of Kosta, Boda, and Åfors each have exciting individual stories of their own yet stand together under the common brand name Kosta Boda. The corps of designers currently on retainer at Kosta Boda works with both utilitarian and art glass. Glass results from a great many meetings between people–artists, craftspeople, and lovers of glass. The artists of Kosta Boda have a decisive role to play in all the creative stages of the process. The cooperation between the designers and the skilled craftspeople is very close; indeed, it is essential if the designers are to transfer their intentions to the glass. The History of Kosta Boda: Kosta, the parent glassworks of Kosta Boda and the oldest glassworks in Sweden still in operation, has a fascinating history that forms a valuable part of Swedish cultural heritage. The glassworks was founded in 1742 by the governors of the counties of Kronoberg and Kalmar, Anders Koskull and Georg Bogislaus Stael von Holstein, both former generals in the army of Karl XII and distinguished veterans of the battle of Narva, among others. The two county governors founded the glassworks upon the instructions of Fredrik I and modeled it on Continental glassworks. The works was situated deep in the spruce forests of Småland, on a site midway between the two country towns, and near a village that was then known as Dåfvedshult. The main reason for choosing this location was the unlimited availability of wood. Enormous quantities of wood were naturally required to keep the glassmaking furnaces burning day and night. Both of the founders wanted their names to be remembered, so the works was christened Kosta, from the initial letters–Ko and Sta–of the surnames of both the Carolinian generals. After a time the entire community was renamed after the growing glassworks. During the first 150 years, the glassworks in Kosta produced only utility glass, including window glass Package Dimensions: 89x406x3787 Department: Kitchen Tags: Blue Kitchen Kosta Boda

Presented is a fantastic quality Japanese Imari porcelain charger or large round plate, dating to around the 1860s-1870s. The plate is done in a vibrant Imari palette featuring ornate decoration in rust red, cobalt blue, green, and rich gold gilt detailing. The center of the plate is decorated with chrysanthemums and a fan, while the edges have alternating vignettes of phoenixes and peonies, all intricately detailed and well done. Really a magnificent piece, large enough for use as a serving platter. This piece is in excellent overall condition. The gilding around the rim has significant wear, but the rim seems to have a bit of brown glaze to it as well that makes this less noticeable. The gilt decoration of the rest of the plate is in great shape with no significant losses. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs. The charger measures about 17 3/4 inches in diameter and stands about 2 1/4 inches tall at the rim. -jm
