Architect: James Hubbell Location: Santa Ysabel, CA James Hubbell has been building and adding to his home on a hilltop outside of San Diego, CA for over 30 years. It's clearly inspired by Gaudi (and walking the grounds feels a lot like a mini Park Guell), among other influences. But Hubbell is a master of organic architecture and walking through his estate is a rare treat. It's open to the public every year on Fathers' Day. This compound was almost destroyed in the Cedar Fire of 2003, but has now been almost entirely rebuilt.
My birthday weekend was something I had been dreaming about for a while! I had scouted out this place about 4 years ago and told Brandon I really wanted to go one day. Earlier this year we were talking about birthdays and I happened to look up the availability ( which is usually ALWAYS booked up ) and MY BIRTHDAY WEEKEND WAS OPEN, I was soo happy so we booked the time right away. THE END! :)) I knew coming to this place I would NOT be disappointed and I sure wasn’t. We played around with sheep and chickens as they roamed around the property and they also tried coming into the cottage lol. Alexis and Manny left us a welcoming gift for when we got there- a basket of fresh eggs, milk, butter and A LOAF OF BANANA BREAD! like c’mon- I nearly cried. Needless I could go on but these photos will do the talking. A sincere dream. Since stumbling on the concept of an earth ship in late 2012, I have wanted to help create an autonomous vista from the ground up – earlier this year I had that opportunity.
It was important to Julia and John to build a house in a way that was respectful of the environment and that would be sustainable to live in long-term. It took three years from when they started building to before they were able to move in, but it's because they did nearly all the work themselves.
