How do you know you're in love? Angry? Or sad? Emotions start off in the brain, then ripple through the whole body. Now scientists have charted where we consciously feel specific emotions. They hope these sensation maps will one day help diagnose and treat mood disorders.

A few of you have been asking about our science unit this month. The theme is PLANTS and I now have our unit worksheets available for purchase on Teachers Pay Teachers (click here for the direct link). If you want more information about how my science station is organized, check out this blog post and this blog post. Similar to my other science units, this Plant Unit is based around 9 vocabulary words: *Seeds *Petal *Flower *Roots *Stem *Plant *Branch *Trunk *Leaves I created 2 assessments (one for receptive/expressive vocabulary and one for basic concepts) as well as 16 worksheets addressing a variety of skills (from writing, to following directions when coloring, graphing, counting, matching, categorizing, sequencing, measurement, word search, as well as cut and glue activities. This unit addresses my students' science IEP goals as well as a variety of other goals (language arts, math, speech, and occupational therapy). Here are the 2 assessments. Firs is the receptive/expressive vocabulary, followed by the concept "test." And here is the vocabulary page which can be utilized as matching page (picture-to-picture or word-to-picture). Here are some examples of worksheets included in this product: Also, here are some pictures of the other "hands-on" items we use to supplement the worksheets. Students usually get to use these when they finish their work each day as a reward. We have some cute planting books: This hands-on center allows kids to look at different plants with a magnifying glass, sort fruits vs. vegetables, and label the parts of a plant with a dry erase marker. This activity allows students to build their own plants and then measure/write the measurement down using dry erase markers. This is a magnetic puzzle where you have to put the pieces of the plant on and then also use the magnetic words to label each part. If you are interested in seeing a similar unit on my Body Parts Science Unit, check out this post.

I just love this color changing flowers science experiment! It is really easy to do and the kids love watching the flowers change color. We think it is the perfect science activity for spring! I even created printable recording sheets that kids in preschool and early elementary can use to show their observations.
Not sure when my obsession with installation art started but it's been unrelenting by holding my attention in a serious way for at least the past year. I honestly feel like if I didn't love my job (right now) so much and feel like I really was answering a divine calling to do it, I would easily dive head first into the world of installation art and try any carve out my place in it. I first stumbled upon this project idea on Princentenol under the name Tint and Shade Ceiling Hanging. I LOVED the idea of doing it but felt like it needed a little bit of something more to it so I mentally bookmarked it and then just forgot about it. Time passed, I got bored with some of what I had been doing in the 3D Design class, and a dug it back up in an effort to indulge my installation art obsession. The learning objectives behind this project are multi-layered and touch upon so many great things... Technique of painting evenly and with careful brush strokes Experiencing tempera paint and understanding why it is so awesome Color mixing, tinting, and shading Understanding and creating geometric and organic shapes Learning how art can be used to transform and reshape space For as simple as the project was, it was also pretty challenging. While I normally do lessons/projects that last about 2-3 weeks, this one easily took five total. It really required the kids to stay on task and stay the course even when it seemed like the work was becoming monotonous and redundant - because, seriously? It was once it came time to draw and cut each of the 144 shapes that were needed to make up the 72 pairs of shapes that would hang off of each of their rings. Since I share a classroom with my part-time colleague, storage is ALWAYS a challenge and this project didn't help at all. Thankfully, the issue was attended to beautifully by hanging things from the ceiling up by the front of the classroom/teacher's podium - this was to help keep students from wanting to bat at them while they moved around the class. The whole installation is mostly hung up right now with the exception of a few yellow pairings that I have to finish up quickly and get hung up because few people wanted to take on the task of that color. The most popular colors were red, orange, and blue overall. Kind of surprised me that orange was so popular but it's my favorite so I was delighted that so many of the kids wanted to do it. Here is what our exhibit "The Ombre Experience" looks like hung up in the student gallery hallway... I feel like (for the most part) I'm pretty pleased with it. We've gotten a lot of really great feedback on it and though I would have liked it to have filled out the space a little more, what it does look like really works for the space.

This resource contains six ancient Greece learning stations that students can rotate through in small groups. Each learning station (or center) is designed to give students engaging and exciting learning experiences to practice, enrich, review, and enhance their learning. Students will visit each station with a small group and complete ancient Greece activities. Here’s the fun part! During the learning stations, students will create an accordion book to showcase their learning. They’ll “build” foldable parts of a Parthenon accordion book while they progress through the stations. Then, when they complete all their work, they’ll put together the accordion book to showcase their learning in a fun and interactive way! Working both independently and with their small groups, students will have multiple opportunities to develop their understanding of ancient Greece while they investigate its geography, religion, accomplishments, politics, economics, and society. ABOUT THE LEARNING STATIONS: The ancient Greece learning centers or stations are based on the Common Core elements for Social Studies: Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics/Government, Economy, and Society Station 1: Geography - Students learn about the geography of ancient Greece as they label and color in a map & complete guided notes. Station 2: Religion - At this station students learn about the religion of ancient Greece. First, they’ll read a passage. Then, students will doodle icons for Greek deities. Station 3: Achievements - Students read a series of reading cards to learn about 6 of ancient Greece’s significant achievements. Then, they collect facts to add to a chart. Station 4: Politics - Students will learn about the Greek government in their small groups. Then, they’ll use their knowledge to piece together facts that have been separated. Station 5: Economy - At this station students will learn about the economy of ancient Greece. They’ll answer questions and even design currency for a city-state. Station 6: Society - Students will learn about the class structure in ancient Greece’s civilization. They’ll fill in guided notes and complete a social class chart. All Stations: Vocabulary – Students will travel with a vocabulary tracker to each learning station. They’ll collect critical vocabulary and record the definitions as they work. ABOUT THE INTERACTIVE PARTHENON ACCORDION BOOK Students will easily create a Parthenon accordion book. Each page that they complete during the learning centers will be glued together to create the book. Then, they’ll add a Parthenon cover and end page to make an expandable display of their learning! The accordion books make awesome classroom displays and easily fold to fit inside students’ folders! INCLUDED IN THIS DETAILED RESOURCE: This resource is absolutely turn-key! Everything you need is included! Station Implementation Guide Station Grade Tracker Station Vocabulary Worksheet Station Table Labels (6) Teacher Resources - Detailed Station Overview and Set-Up Guides (7) Station Materials (reading passages, directions, reading cards, maps, student directions, station pieces, accordion book worksheets) Step-by-Step guide for make the Parthenon accordion book Keys (for all station activities) You might also like...
