Common Core Language Standard L.5.2c : Use a comma to set off the words yes and no (e.g., Yes, thank you), to set off a tag question from the rest of the sentence (e.g., It's true, isn't it?), and to indicate direct address (e.g., Is that you, Steve?). I find that most of my students already know how to use commas in series or lists and in punctuating dialogue. This printable was created to help students understand and practice the above Common Core language standard, which goes beyond lists and dialogue and which, when mastered, is indicative of advanced command of the written English language. It introduces the use of the comma in special cases such as appositives, nouns in direct address, introductory expressions, and tags. Clear examples are given. This is followed by an activity where students try to correctly place a total of 31 commas in a set of 25 practice sentences. Please see the thumbnails. Some sentences need more than one comma and some none at all. Answers provided. This item is a PAID digital download from my TpT store. As such, it is for use in one classroom only.
