First edition by Toshio Shibata (2021) First impression Medium format hardback in new condition 20-page concertina book with a ribbon on the spine Published by Chose Commune About The book Painting reveals 16 unpublished colour photographs by Toshio Shibata, a Japanese photographer who is known for his rigorous and meticulous compositions. The representation of intimate yet spectacular landscapes — natural, and especially artificial — are at the core of Shibata’s work. In keeping with the tradition of painting that Shibata studied in his early years in 1968, this book celebrates the abstraction of beauty. It has been designed in a concertina format that can also be turned into a suspended object — just like a kakemono, a Japanese unframed scroll painting made on paper or silk and displayed as a wall hanging.
Hot and sunny today here, how was it with you? I say hot, however I believe it is really hot elsewhere in Europe, and it sounds way to hot for me (or Monty dog), so I hope if you live somewhere as hot as that I hope you are surviving it all! We went to the seaside and down on the sand it was much cooler. I have popped a couple of 'pages' from Flo's delicious concertina book (as featured on our last Hochanda shows) on Facebook recently, so I thought that tonight I would show you those two pages again plus several more on our blog, so here they are..... What a clever lady our lovely Flo is, as I'm sure you will agree! This lovely folding book was created using our latest stamps (note to self: must take them off special offer on Monday!), plus a few more older images. You will find the newbies here. Thank you for your lovely company, and your lovely comments always too. Back soon, Jean x

A vibrant, richly illustrated concertina book that takes the reader on a journey down the river, from the source high up in the mountains all the way to the sea. The River That Flows Beside Me ventures down surging waterfalls and past meandering turns, whilst exploring the remarkable relationship between humans, nature and rivers.
A blog about art and illustration.
I have started playing (due to lockdown) with little concertina books and a hole punch. these are easy to make and fun to play with. The first one was a line of animals all eating each other, like the old lady who swallowed a fly. The second one below has turned out looking very worried, but it was, when I started it, a sort of Boo! book. Books for kids to sequence images and tell stories are great for education can be simple or complex and most importantly can be great fun.
Book artist, photographer and writer Rachel Hazell loves working with paper. She creates beautiful things with it, and her favorite thing to make are books. Here she explains how you can make your own concertina booklet.

Books made by artists can be sophisticated or simple. So, what is an artists' book? A new exhibition puts these obscure artworks in the spotlight.

Thanks for your kindness and support with the recent Hochanda shows, sales were good, and we were very pleased with it all. The studios, presenters, staff and other demonstrators were delightful, and Lesley and I had a very pleasant couple of days in the Peterborough area, as the following day, Saturday, we had a day out in a rather lovely local town, before driving back home later in the day - lots of coffee and cake were enjoyed of course!! I have just received the pretty seaside image below from Sandra, so I thought I would start with this tonight - love the painted background, and the youngsters enjoying a day out, all very enticing. Aaaah I can almost hear the waves, the seagulls and smell the salty air... Anyway back to the Hochanda shows and Christmas, lol, and I will pop below the beginnings of some of the samples I had with me, so you can see the details more closely.... Here is the one by Willy that appeared on my last Facebook post, and is defo worth another look as it is gorgeous .. .....and here are the same girls but in an assembly by Flo - just adorable! ... Here is Sandra's version - another real beauty!... Followed by Sylvie's colourful and bubbly interpretation.... My final make for this evening is the little folding Christmas book I demoed, made with our lovely houses and trees die cut sheets. I enjoyed making this creation immensely, and putting the images behind the little windows and doors. Here it is folded up.... Here it is opened out.... A detail.... ... and even the back is decorated.... I joined all the pieces with the low tack masking tape before decorating with our brand new issue of A4 background sheets. How about making one for your family for Christmas, you could even pop family images of your own behind the doors and windows?! Thanks for looking! Back soon, Jean x

photo courtesy of cheeky @elvisrunner A few weeks ago I mentioned on Twitter that I would be taking part in a short presentation at Language Show Live. One of the cheeky #MFLTwitterati (yes, Prim, I'm talking about you!) asked if it would involve paper folding. I suppose if you look back on my more recent posts, it does appear that I am particularly keen on the art of papiroflexia. And here is another one - the concertina book. Here's how to make it: 2. Fold it into a concertina. 1. Halve a piece of A4 paper lengthways 3. Write or draw on each section of the concertina except the very top one and the very bottom one. 4. Stick something at the top and the bottom sections of your concertina. These mini-books are ideal for anything that requires a sequence, as they provide ready-made 'steps' on which to write. So you could use them for recipes, and have foodstuffs or utensils at the top and bottom, or even for a more formal piece of writing which requires the use of time sequencing phrases: Another variation on the theme is the accordion book. In this example I have stuck together two zig-zag folds and shaped them. Concertina books and accordion books are small, non-threatening and easy to store and display. Why not have a go? UPDATE 2.3.13: Here is a variation on the concertina book which was invented by Rachel Smith. The concertina forms the the steps up which the animals climb into the Ark. My Year 2 class loved this! UPDATE 14.5.13: I have been doing Les Planètes with Year 5 this half term, and was after some kind of writing activity to show off our extended sentences. Enter the concertina book!

Speaking of Chords.. - posted in Teaching and Learning: I'm breaking my own rule with this post. It's better to say nothing and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.I was going to post this in another nearby topic and realized that one was referring to a duet.I have these 2 diagrams for chords. I don't remember where I found them. 1 for a 20b Anglo and 1 for a 30. Neither indicates what key the instrument is in..or does that matter?? (see what I mean about my rul...

A wordless concertina board book of big, bright faces to place around the baby on the floor at tummy time--family faces on one side and toys on the other--by award-winning author/illustrator Gavin Bishop. This safe and sturdy fold-out book is a perfect gift, with compelling illustrations of the things babies love. Friendly faces from the whole family combine with familiar toys and objects, drawn in bold lines with a striking minimalist color palette. Tummy time helps to strengthen a baby's back, neck, and shoulders. The strong, simple images stimulate developing eyesight, allowing babies to see things up close and from a different point of view. The images are perfect for introducing first words and concepts as baby grows, with 12 family faces--including the dog--and 12 objects that babies love to hold and explore--soft toys, ball, keys, an enticing pair of spectacles and more.
