As the almost unreadable biography on his website reads, Benoit Paillé is a self-professed “conscious agitator and creative genius”. Zonked on Ritalin for his most crucial years, Benoit stumbled into the lap of art, and now he believes it “sustains him more than leftover hot dogs."

In Subway (1986) Bruce Davidson shows New York City looking sweaty, rowdy and visceral. You can almost hear the loud clank of metal on metal, smell the fumes of signature graffiti paint, and feel keys pressed hard into sweaty palms as riders push the jagged edges through their fingers. We’ve seen NYC in the fear … Continue reading "Subway : Subterranean New York City (1980)"

Title: The American Weekly Author: n/a Publication: Hearst Consolidated Corporation Inc. Publication Date: June 2, 1946 Book Description: During the 1940s, those Americans who were not familiar with Willy Pogany’s book illustrations would have likely seen his work displayed on newsstands and coffee tables. The covers of popular magazines such as Harpers Weekly, Ladies Home Journal, and Metropolitan Magazine were often illustrated by the artist. In addition, his work came folded in the pages of many Sunday newspapers, on the cover of a widely distributed syndicated supplement, The American Weekly magazine. Boasting “the greatest circulation in the world,” the magazine printed sensationalist stories of murder, romance, and suspense. The American Weekly was one of several magazines and newspapers that was owned by Hearst Consolidated Corporation Inc. Willy Pogany was a friend of William Randolph Hearst and painted the exterior murals on two guest houses at Wyntoon, Hearst’s Bavarian-style hunting lodge in Northern California. This copy of The American Weekly, which features Pogany’s cover illustration for John Erskine’s retelling of the story of Aucassin and Nicolette, was published in the Milwaukee Sentinel.

American photographer Alex Webb’s seven-year photographic ode to Istanbul captures a city in a state of political and economic flux
Wherever he goes, from Istanbul to Amazonia, from Mexico to Haiti, Alex Webb takes the pulse of the world in the streets, not as a thief stealing lives, but as an ambassador of the gaze of peoples, in which he reads their joys as well as their suffering and their tragedies.
