Copper Pipe Love Heart This lovely, eye-catching love heart will look fabulous on your mantelpiece, in your bedroom or even as a wall mount. It is also a fantastic anniversary, valentines, engagement or wedding gift. Each and every love heart is made by hand using 10mm copper pipe, and soldered to ensure maximum durability. This does mean that our items are bespoke, so please expect some very minor imperfections. Every item is made to order; therefore, the images may differ slightly to the actual product; this includes soldering marks. If you have a specific size request for a love heart, please contact us and we will happily work with you to create a bespoke item. Dimensions of the love hearts shown: Large - H14cm x W 18.5cm Small - H12cm x W14cm Over time the natural oxidization of the copper will age the item to develop a more rustic and antique appearance. However, if you wish to maintain the bright copper style, a regular polishing will keep it shiny depending on the look you wish to achieve.
Hello everyone! Yesterday I made a post about how to apply an ammonia patina to copper. In that post I mentioned a borax patina that can be done quickly and easily, so I decided to write up this little how-to :) I love this method because it's fast and easy and produces some lovely colors, like the ones in my Copper Heart Earrings. If you like instant gratification as much as I do, then this technique is for you! Materials and Tools Borax (can be found in the laundry/household cleaners aisle in the grocery store - look for it on the bottom shelves) A small container for the solution you'll mix up, I use a ramekin A soldering/heat proof surface. I use a charcoal brick atop a fire brick A torch - I use a small butane torch A pair of cross-lock tweezers Very hot water (not boiling hot, but as hot as you can get it from your faucet) A piece of copper, of course :D The first thing you have to do is make sure your copper is clean. Some scrub with a toothbrush and Dawn soap, but I just wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol and that seems to work fine. Once your piece is cleaned, set it aside and mix your borax solution. In your small container/ramekin, pour in some very hot water (again, not boiling, but it should be a little too hot to the touch). Then, sprinkle in your borax. I personally put a ton of borax in my solution- often so much that not all of it dissolves in the water- I like to super saturate the water with the borax. You want to work a little quickly here because you don't want your borax solution to cool off too much. Take your copper and set it on your heat-proof surface, and make sure your cross-lock tweezers are handy. With your torch, heat the bejeezus out of your copper. You want to heat it until it glows cherry red. Quickly grab your cross-lock tweezers and use them to grab the piece of copper, and quench it in your borax solution. You want to work fast because you want your copper to be as hot as possible when you quench it. When you quench your copper, something pretty cool happens! When you first dunk it in the borax solution, the copper will hiss as it cools down rapidly and will turn kind of gray-ish. But just a moment after that, you hear another hiss and can literally see the red patina appear right before your eyes! This is my favorite part, haha! Ive made a video just so you can see how satisfying that double hiss is! :D I hope you found this little guide helpful! The really great thing about this method is if you don't like the patina you end up with, all you have to do is toss it in the pickle pot for awhile and it will come back copper colored so you can retry your borax patina as many times as you like until you achieve the look you want. For now I'll leave you with a pic of me holding my mom's kitty Jinx on the day we brought him home. :) Til Next Time!

I love the look of copper in the garden-so much so that I have made a few different pieces for my garden and also a rain chain. I like to use copper tubing because it is flexible and I can manipulate it any way that I want. The added bonus is that it is beautiful and elegant. I created this recently from a roll of copper tubing, some concrete and an old nursery pot: DIY copper garden art Here is another piece I made last year: DIY copper garden art Here is a picture of the first one I created a few years ago: DIY copper garden art These pieces of garden art are extremely easy to create-you just need to use your imagination and find your artistic side. In this post I will show you how I created my newest addition to my garden so that you can go out there and create one for your garden. For this project you will need: 1. An old nursery pot (I think this is a 3 gallon size) and a roll of duct tape. 2. A bag of concrete mix-any will do. I use Quikrete. Also a tub to mix the concrete in. 3. A roll of copper tubing (I picked this one up at Menards it is enough for a couple of projects) 4. A pair of tin snips or pipe cutter. 5. A tape measure (optional) Here are the steps to create your garden art: 1. Use the duct tape to cover the holes in the bottom of the nursery pot like this: 2. Roll out the tubing and cut into the length you desire. For mine I cut them into 6 foot lengths. Just a note-I like to work in odd numbers so I cut 5 lengths for this project. 3. Mix up the bag of concrete according to the package directions. 4. Let the concrete sit for a few minutes to hydrate then add to the nursery container. 5. Let the concrete sit for a few minutes then start inserting the copper tubing into the concrete like this: 6. In order to hold the tubing in place I use a nylon tie at the top: 7. Let sit for a week (if you use regular concrete) to cure. 8. After the concrete has cured you can cut the nylon tie: 9. Use your hands to gently bend and guide the tubing-do not bend to sharply. This will cause a crimp. Always bend slowly. Now start on the next one: Just continue to bend each piece to achieve the look you want. Just remember that this is your piece of art-it does not need to be perfect. Almost done: After I had it the way I wanted it I did solder a few of the areas together just to be sure it was sturdy: You will also notice that it started to patina-I did this treatment before I put it in the garden so I wouldn't kill or damage any plants. If you want to keep the copper color you might want to seal it. 10. Cut off the pot. 11. Find a spot in your garden: 12. Dig a hole and plant your piece of art: 12. Sit back and enjoy your own piece of art:-)) DIY copper garden art DIY copper garden art I hope you try this project out-you can create your own original art work that you will love and your neighbors will admire. And of course it was easy! Until next time-Happy Planting! Rhonda
