Focus on plants Coral Bark Japanese Maple Coral bark Japanese Maple or – Acer palmatum ‘Sangokaku’ is one of my favorite small ornamental trees. As with all Japanese Maples, it will need a protected location from wind and the afternoon summer sun. This small tree has green leaves with blood red twigs – a truly stunning combination. Mature branches will slowly lose the bright red color, but all new twigs will be a bright fire red for at least 3 years. The fall color varies, but most years the green leaves turn golden orange yellow with some years a combination of yellow with red tips which will really make a statement!! Japanese maples can have a somewhat inconsistent fall color year to year in our Valley. Some years you will get a spectacular display of colors, while other years, we change from Hot to cold, too quickly and the leaves end up just turning brown and stay on the tree all winter until the new spring leaves pus them off! But when the leaves due turn those spectacular colors it is truly worth it! The approximate mature size is 15x12, so if you have a protected space, and looking for something a little different, why not try the Coral Bark Japanese Maple!!

On gray, rainy days like this one, we welcome color in the landscape. Perhaps that's why coral bark maples (Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku') are so popular here. Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku' These bright red branches really brighten up the day - there aren't many trees that look this good without their leaves on. Coral bark maples belong to the big, beautiful family of Japanese maples that thrive in the Pacific Northwest. Like other members of this family, these maples do best when they have some protection from full sun, western exposures. Given part-sun conditions, they require minimal summer watering once established. Coral bark maples are well suited to small urban gardens. Their mature height is rarely above 25'; width can be between 15' and 20'. They have an attractive vase-shape that needs little or no pruning. Their new growth tends to be twiggy, as you see above, but a little bit of judicious thinning will shape them up nicely. These trees offer year around beauty. In addition to the bright, coral-colored branches in winter, they have attractive light green foliage in spring and summer. In fall, their leaves turn a stunning, clear yellow - every bit as eye-catching as the branches. Coral bank maples are available in Seattle-area nurseries now.
Smaller but as desirable as the highly popular 'Sango kaku', Acer palmatum 'Winter Flame' is noted for its showy coral bark and fall color.
