These hilarious get-ups really put the "Ha!" in Halloween.
Here comes a guaranteed smile: Look at that face. This is a girl who dances to the beat of her own trash can lids, and I am HERE FOR IT. Yep, nothing makes me happy the way kids-being-their-best-weird-selves makes me happy. It's just so pure. You see a kid dressed as a trash can for Halloween, you know that was ALL the kid's idea. Ditto for Hulk Fairy: (via Imgur) With those giant hands - and that stance - I'm actually seeing a Hulk Fairy Boxer, hah. I don't know about you, but this is exactly what I need today - so of course I went looking for more. Elton John is in the house... and on the piano! I had to do a triple-take for this one, that illusion is SO GOOD. I hope he played "I'm Still Standing" out of a hidden speaker somewhere, too, because puns make every costume better. :p [movie announcer voice]: "In a world full of fairies and butterflies, one little girl dared to be a snail... with her own slime trail." (details on the dad's original FB post) And she is MAGICAL. Little Moss came here to kick butt and drink milk... and she's just finished her milk: (via Twitter) BRILLIANT. Pretty sure I spotted this on FOE, and this was the best comment: "Instead of 'trick-or-treat,' she could ask if they saw that ludicrous display last night." Which is HYSTERICAL if you know The IT Crowd, omigosh. Ha! I have such a soft spot for kids who ask to dress as random inanimate objects: (via Today) The miniature hangers! The clothes in the door! Do you think the desire to dress as a washing machine is something we just grow out of? Because if so that's a shame. Plus this one makes it easy to keep track of your child... unless you're in a construction zone: (via CostumeWorks) I genuinely thought the parents cut up a real traffic cone for this, but nope, that's all homemade from EVA foam! I was also tickled to learn that's a little girl. Go, Ellie! I've seen a few variations on this next one, and now I kind of want to make one for myself? (via CostumeWorks) YASSS. There was a time when John and I were hopelessly addicted to playing the claw machine at our local Wal-Mart, mostly because it was easy to win. We'd roll up on a Friday night with a roll of quarters, and waltz out later with a giant bag of cheap plush toys. Hey, wouldn't it be fun if you could rig this costume to distribute candy? Not this year, of course, since that's too close, but it'd be fun to dress as a candy machine that actually gives out candy. Speaking of, I've seen a LOT of vending machine costumes - so many I couldn't decide on one to feature, but go google it if you're curious. More inspired wackiness: this teen decided to dress as a shower. (via Instructables) Complete with shower head, soap-on-a-rope, and rubber ducky! Amelia's niece was nicknamed "Peanut," so... (via CostumeWorks) This may be the most brilliant use of eggcrate foam ever. Imagine all the fun poses you could do with this one: (via CostumeWorks) THE POSSIBILITIES. I wonder if it's possible to do a Ministry Of Silly Walks sign? If nothing else, that's an easy group costume: one person hold the sign, and leads a small parade of people walking funny. Ha! I don't have kids myself, but I've heard enough from parents to know that when a kid learns about something new and fascinating, like, say, horseshoe crabs, they tend to go ALL IN. Like so: (via Bored Panda) I'm not sure who to applaud more: the kid who chose this, or the brilliant crafter who made it happen. That shell is amazing - and the little feet sticking out crack me up, lol. Another illusion costume that made my jaw DROP: (via CostumeWorks) I would LOVE to see her trick-or-treat in this. Can you imagine that reveal when she turns around?? Eeeee! More brilliant weirdos - who I assume live here in Florida, since our Halloweens tend to be a sweaty affair: These flip-flops are easy to make, too: you only need cardboard and a sliced pool noodle for the strap. Love it. OoooOOooh, y'all, these next two photos gave me an idea for the punny couple's costume of the century. (Or you could use it for siblings, best friends, etc.) Ready? First one person dresses as a sea anemone, like this: (which is BRILLIANT, btw.) ...then the other person dresses as a houseplant, like this: (via Oh Happy Day) Now all you need is a large sign that reads, "WITH FRONDS LIKE THESE, WHO NEEDS ANEMONES?" Someone please do this and send me a picture. I would do it myself, but all those wiggly balloons wouldn't last 5 minutes with the cats, ha. Technically those are all the costumes I found that would fit my "wonderfully weird" theme, but of course while I was searching I found a few more I still want to show you. So consider this bonus cuteness: Halloween Parenting Level: 9000 I want to make this outfit for Dapper Day: (via 'A Casarella) And finally - again, not weird, but adorable and fun Dapper Day inspiration: Imagine wearing a white ruffled collar and fascinator with a sleek tan dress: instant Latte 'bound! And then I'd have a pin or purse with, "A Whole Latte Dapper" on it, because let's face it, I'm me, and I WILL ruin/enhance anything with bad puns. I hope this made you smile as much I did writing it, gang. I find that when the walls of the world start closing in, sometimes it helps to sit back, breath a bit, and then think of the silliest happy thing you can do right now. And with Halloween coming up, we've got a built-in excuse to make or buy ALL THE SILLY HAPPY THINGS. So get the tiara. Make the ruffled boa. Save that giant cardboard box and turn yourself into a washing machine. Do something for no other reason than it's different and it feeds your soul, because the world needs you here. We need you here. We need you rested and recharged, inspired and determined. Fill yourself up, so you can fill up the people around you. Also it's scary to go alone, take this: ::HUGS:: ***** UPDATE: Now there's a Part 2! Go check out even MORE wonderfully weird costumes. ****** P.S. As a couple sometimes it's easy to fall into sedentary bliss, which can mean that the idea of going out, especially when you have to dress up, may seem particularly taxing. On the other hand, if you like the whole coordination thing, being a couple literally gives you someone to coordinate with. Now, you don't have to take the matchy-matchy thing to your everyday life, but it is the absolute best for your Halloween costume ideas. That is if you're not too lazy leaving your cozy home and actually go out and show your couple costumes to the world. Or constructing the DIY Halloween costumes in the first place.
Don't want to be recognized by some unleashed spirits on the All Hallows Eve? Not sure if you'd like to be lured into the 'other world' too soon? Do not worry; the Halloween costumes are there for a reason. Traditionally, they were meant to be worn so that the ghosts and spirits wouldn't recognize you and cause you no harm. Today, it's more of a fun tradition, when you can be somebody else, at least for a day. If in the olden days the disguise were more about witches and ghosts, now you can morph into your favorite movie character, an animal and even an object or an intangible idea - creative Halloween costumes are the hype right now.

This year’s Costume Institute exhibit, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, is the largest to date, spread out in three sites at two museums. Fashion and religion seem like strange bedfellows but iconography and opulence weigh heavily in both in this exhibit.

This is not pyschedelic performance art from the 1960s, this is ballet. Throughout history there are works of art that stand out as somehow atemporal and this choreography created in 1922 for the Theatre of Bauhaus, is one such artwork… Featuring astonishing brightly coloured, asymmetrical and cumbersome costumes, this ballet broke so far with convention of that…
