On the weekend I caught the last day of the Intertwined exhibition as the Koorie Heritage Trust. As well as the more traditional baskets and eel traps, Lisa Waup‘s little woven nest of feather and fibre really stood out. Lovely pastel colours interwoven with wallaby browns. Artwork like Lisa’s and that of Ruth Woods of …
After making my first quiet book, I decided I wanted to make both a Book of Mormon and a Bible quiet Book. I felt like this would be a great way to introduce my children to these Books of Scripture. I just finished the Book of Mormon quiet book a few days ago and in this post I’ll share the activity pages with you! By next year I’m hoping to finish the Bible quiet book. These activity pages are from Book of Mormon stories. They are shown pre-binding. Edit (2022)- I just released a Book of Mormon quiet book template! Buy the download here: https://sewmuchtocreate.com/product/book-of-mormon-quiet-book-pattern/ This post contains affiliate links. As an amazon associate I earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. For the cover page, I used Iron-on Gold letters for the title, “Book of Mormon”. I had to buy a few sets because there were not enough “o”‘s in one pack. The exact gold letters I used are no longer available but the ones in the link above are by the same brand. I also used D rings and eyelets (with the eyelet pliers) to create the Gold plates. There is one “leaf” of the page that can move side to side. The first activity pages are of Lehi’s Dream- the Iron Rod passing the Great and Spacious building and river of water leading to the tree. There is a cord sewn on both ends of the page on both pages. the people are removable, there is a strip of felt sewn on the back of the people. One side of the strip of the felt is sewn to the person, and the other side of the felt strip attaches by velcro. The people can slide along the “Iron Rod” on both sides. The great and spacious building has levels that are not sewn on the top, so the people can go in the great and spacious building if you put them there. Also, the fruit is removable by snaps. This is a boat puzzle relating to the story of Nephi building the boat to travel to America. The velcro sewn to the felt pages is the soft side and the velcro sewn to the boat parts is the rough side. When sewing on velcro, make sure you sew it on last after creating all other pages of the quiet book. The needle gets very sticky going through the adhesive side of the velcro. You will most likely have to throw out that sewing machine needle. So get as much use out of it as you can before throwing it out! I’m excited about this activity page. This is of King Benjamin preaching to the people. It says in the scriptures that families gathered together with their tents pointing towards the temple. For the tents I used 4 inch zippers. Instead of putting felt people in them, I am going to put laminated pictures of our own family. Once my son is a year or so older, I’ll collect pictures of our family (pocket size), laminate them, and put them in the tents. This way we are applying the scriptures to ourselves. This activity page allows them to “sew” through the eyelets on the Title of Liberty. I used Iron-on Gold letters and eyelets (with pliers) for the title of liberty. For the cord, I sewed the first few inches to the felt page so it couldn’t be removed from the quiet book. The end of the cord I burned so it wouldn’t fray. This is the most important story in the entire quiet book, when Jesus visits the people in the Americas after his Resurrection. I had some magnet sheets from a different project and decided to use them for this page. The magnets were hot glued to the felt page with Jesus and also to the back of each felt child. This page was a fun one to make. The finger of the Lord comes out of the cloud to touch the stones. The stones and the brother of Jared are all removable by snaps and can be placed in the barge to the right. The barge is made of clear fabric on the outside so you can see the items placed in it. This is shown below. This is the last and one of my favorite pages. This is Moroni praying over the plates then burying them. The plates are removable by a snap. The rock on the right page is also removable by a snap and underneath the rock is a 4 inch zipper. I used 1/2 yard of gold fabric for the binding. Below is the finished product! I hope this is helpful for you if you are wanting to create one of your own. Happy Making!
Allie had a little lamb... I was not expecting to enjoy this so much. It’s sort of like Play-Doh for adults--there’s a visceral joy to it that defies explanation. I’m not at all sure my sheep will come out looking anything close to the cheerful breed on the kit box, but it isn’t looking like a nuclear mutant, either. A little aardvark-y, yes, but I think it may be recognizable as a sheep in its final form. And yes, aardvark-y is a word. Professional writer at the helm here--I have a license to manufacture adjectives. Two things struck me as I made the face and ears. One, that my sheep looks dangerously close to Nick Park’s (of Wallace and Gromit fame) creation Shaun the Sheep. It’s in the eyes, I think. It surely lacks the tell-tale toothy grin of Park’s characters, but the roundness of the edges reminds me of his style. The other thing that struck me was a direct counterpoint to my surprising enjoyment of this project. I was startled by how elementally wrong it feels to stab something in the eye. Even if the stabbing is how that eye is created. Needle-felting is, at its most basic, stabbing roving repeatedly with a very sharp needle. I knew the ball of roving had no sensory perception. It could feel no pain. It could not be oppressed or assaulted. Still, I couldn’t get past the guttural revulsion of sticking the thing in the eye over and over. I was glad, relieved even, when the eyes were finally formed. I exhaled a breath I hadn’t even realized I was holding. Personification gone oddly wrong. Further proof that this tiny thing is powerfully alluring? My teenage daughter wandered by as I was making the face and read the directions over my shoulder. “The kit makes two sheep?” she asked coyly. I knew what was coming: “Could I make the other one?” We’ll see.

This is my favorite sourdough waffle recipe. It is light and crispy due to the sourdough levain and the microbes help break down the glutens to make it more digestible. Top them with some butter and maple syrup for a yummy breakfast! The night before you want the waffles you will need to make a levain and let it sit out overnight. In the morning it will be ready. You can use any type of waffle maker or make this into pancakes too! Check out my kefir ice cream sandwiches if you have leftovers.
