As a child I used to love my Guatemalan worry dolls, I still do. My mom told me to whisper my worries to the dolls and they would fix them for me. It always seemed to work. Now I'm older I realise that this is because I'm actually verbalising my problems instead of keeping them to myself but as a kid I thought it was the dolls working their magic. I still have my dolls, but for a while I've wondered if I could make my own. On Pinterest there were a lot of tutorials to make them with cocktail sticks or cotton bud sticks but I don't really like measuring things out and waiting for glue to completely dry, so I decided to figure out my own way of making them. I've seen lots of wirework dolls on the internet and as a jeweller I find it easier to work in metal than most other materials, so I decided to make a wirework frame as the base of my doll. This is the the step-by-step tutorial of the first worry doll I've ever made. I hope you enjoy :) You will need: Round nose pliers and wire cutters Craft wire Glue (I used regular craft glue) Embroidery thread in at least 3 colours Using the round nose pliers twist a loop into the wire, leaving a tail a few inches long. This will be the head of the doll. Make 2 similar length arm shapes using the pliers to bend the wire back on itself towards the body. Do the same for the legs and cut the wire of the reel. Then twist the excess wire around the legs, leaving a loop at the bottom of each. These loops will be the feet. I decided at this point to twist the arms too, leaving a loop at the end of each. These loops will be the hands. Add a dab of glue to the neck and tie on embroidery thread in your choice of skin tone. Wrap it around the head, use glue at the top of the loop to secure and then wrap back down again. Wrapping around the loop can be a bit tricky at first. I decided that I wanted the hands to be the same colour as the head, so using the same thread I wrapped it down the arm and around the loop. This isn't necessary if you don't want the hands to match the head. I did the same to the other hand then cut the thread and glued the loose end to the body. While the glue is still wet start wrapping the thread for the trousers/skirt around the waist. Then go down each leg individually (unless you're making a skirt - then you just wrap the legs together), glue at the end of the foot loops, and wrap back up again. Cut the thread and glue the loose end to the body. While the glue is still wet start wrapping the thread for the t-shirt. Start wrapping in a cross shape (like below) before you start wrapping straight around. Wrap down each arm, stopping just before the hand loop and wrap back up again. Cut the thread at the neck and glue down. Glue some hair on if desired, I just left mine bald. That's it :) It wasn't too difficult and didn't take too long either. The dolls are flexible when made with wire and a little less fragile. I think it turned out okay. I wouldn't advise selling these or giving them to children though just in case the sharp wire pops out of the thread. I'd love to hear off anyone who has tried to make these. Let me know how they turned out for you. Loppy x
Pipe cleaners and yarn for the body and a wooden ball for the head. Fabrics, buttons and some decorative stuff to give the doll clothes and accessories. Glue, scissors, needle and thread comes in handy. Start with some inspiration by looking at materials. Attach the head and shape the pipe cleaners like this. Fold the pipe cleaners into arms and legs. Tie the yarn to the pipe cleaners. Spin the yarn around the pipe cleaners. Make shapes with the yarn. Leave out the feet and hands! Otherwise the yarn will fall off. Also, it looks better. Patience. When finished, tie a knot and cut the yarn. Plan the clothes. Pin it down and sew the clothes to place. Finished!

Dollmaking is one of life's innocent joys. As the doll takes shape within your hands, there is no room in your mind for negative thoughts. Time slows down; the focus is on the creative magic taking place before you. Whether you are crocheting, sewing, knitting, sculpting, or simply wrapping wire with floss, the doll is taking shape before your eyes, with a piece of your soul wound around it. These dolls are derived and inspired by a series of YouTube tutorials by Emilie Lefler. She has 60 tutorials, from 9 to 19 minutes in length, where she shows you how to create some truly beautiful dolls from bead, floral wire, floss, and flower petals. The first tutorial shows you how to make the basic doll. The only thing I do differently from Emilie when making the dolls is to wrap the end of the wire at the hands and feet, instead of securing with hot glue. In fact, I don't use any hot glue in the making of the doll body (a bit when doing the hair, though). Instead, I bury the beginning of the floss when wrapping the doll, then at the end insert the floss tail into a tapestry needle and run it into the dolls body for an inch or sew and cut off, as in the image below. Also, my dolls are shorter, since I bend up the bottom of the leg about and inch or so to wrap all around the foot and then up the leg. These lovely dolls are easy to make; I've used flower petals, fabric circles, and crochet to make their outfits. Some of them are remove-able (the crochet one's) others are not. After each doll is complete there is such a feeling of sweet accomplishment and joy. Giving the dolls away shares this joy with others. Here is a fun way to create a stand for your doll, which can be embellished or not to your heart's content. Using wood plaques or wooden disks or coasters, glue a small wooden spool to the disk. Make sure the hole in the spool is large enough to accommodate one foot of your doll. After the glue dries, decorate your stand as you like. The top one I just added buttons and ribbon roses randomly, the one on the left is a birch disk (from Michaels) with a wooden drawer knob masquerading as a mushroom, and the one on the right rather more elaborate with a crocheted doily and flowers glued down. One dainty foot fits into the spool, and holds the doll in place :-) Three dolls on one stand! And a sweet Emerald doll for my sister's birthday :-) Create a space for joy and make a doll.

Every miniature artist knows that to recreate any object at micro size, they must not overlook even the smallest detail, because that's where the beauty of this art lies. If you take a peek at the works of Hungarian miniature artist Fanni Sandor, that's exactly what you'll see—meticulously planned and crafted miniature animals that are the next best thing to the real ones.39-year-old Sandor told Bored Panda that she's a biologist and worked with nature conservation projects until her kids were born, but now she is a full-time miniaturist.
