Pattern: Cambie from Sewaholic Size: 10 Fabric: Satin and lace from Minerva Crafts The work Christmas party comes but once a year, but every time requires a new dress! I don't go to many dress-up occasions, but as this one is always the same people, I can't recycle! It's surprising how hard it is to find a nice party dress pattern that isn't a teenage prom dress. I originally wanted something with a low back to show off my new tattoo, but nothing was quite right. I started to make a New Look 6173 but tried it on halfway through and realised I looked somewhat pre-pubescent so gave up on that. In a panic by this point, I decided to go with something tried and tested - Cambie. I love the summer version I made, I know it fits and it's easy to make. I chose to go off-piste a little bit and do layered fabric. I found a beautiful pale blue satin, and paired it with a black corded lace over the top. My plan was to baste the lace to the satin for the bodice, lined with more satin, and for the skirt use the satin as the lining and the lace as the 'main' fabric. Great plan. On paper. It became clear, quite a long way in, that this was a bad plan. Attaching a stiff zip to fine lace, making darts in lace...disaster! So, I unpicked the skirt and basted the lace to the satin instead. I was nearly done and about to pat myself on the back when I discovered I'd sewn the lining the wrong way. I wanted the matt side against my skin but of course that meant making the 'wrong' side the 'right' side and I'd had a brain fail and done it with the shiny side out. This was an epic mistake. I had to remove the entire lining and unpick EVERYTHING. Darts, and all. There were so many times when this dress nearly ended up in the bin, due to my own idiocy. Eventually though, she rose like a phoenix. Lining in correctly, no weird lumpy zip, seams finished with bias binding. I love how neat it is inside: it's almost reversible! Ooh...inside A beautiful dress with a superb fit. Thank heavens the pattern is so great and I'd made it before or this would probably have driven me to irreparable levels of crazy. The amount of unpicking I did, I'm surprised it's not a threadbare rag, but the fabric seems to have held up! Apologies, was feeling a bit silly at this point I think the only thing I'm not crackers about on this version is the sleeves. The stiffness of the fabrics means they stick out in a rather Star Trek stylee and make wearing a shrug/cardi over the top almost impossible. It's a good job I took these photos at home as there isn't a single clear shot of the dress from the party! However, here she is in action, as proof of partying existence.

It's a bright and sunny autumn day here, and i am glad to say that i managed to finish a few wip's this week.....not many, and not helped by a reminder from my lovely lady accountant that my paperwork was due on her desk :(.......but here is the little big dipper quilt i showed you when i first began it, using fresh lights, brights and whites................. ...........i love making doll quilts, they are a great way of exploring patterns and colours that may inspire a bigger quilt or other projects, and i have always liked to have colourful textiles around me while i work..............i am planning to make more little quilts to use as wall hangings.......... ..............the big dipper pattern is one i have always loved for its liveliness and sense of movement..... .............i took a few pictures with some cute creatures, like winnie the winter doll in the top picture, the little china bunny above, and below the mousie (who has her own bed) in a maileg high chair (perfect fit!).............you can also see some of my new rupert blocks from chipper nelly............. ............the quilt fits the much-used and now rather knocked about ikea bed that featured in one of my earlier books and is played with by daisy all the time......she loves it so much.......i might re paint it soon, maybe pale blue next time................. ..........i wanted a fabric for the backing which had a sense of movement too and found this one in the depths of my fabric cupboard...... .............although i finished some works in progress, as in two magazine projects, my tax paperwork and the little big dipper doll quilt......i also began some more wip's :)...............a while ago i bought some ready cut diamond paper pieces from sew and quilt .....i absolutely love english paper piecing and was so looking forward to making something with those diamonds......... ..............i picked out a pile of pretty fabrics for the kind of thing i had in mind.................. .............and began making the six point stars.................. ..............this is such a lovely, simple way to create lots of stars for an eventual quilt........ ..............i have made patchworks using english paper piecing all my life and find it so easy and relaxing to do, and also the best way for me to make accurate blocks ;).......i like how it is portable and how you soon build up a collection of blocks..............it also means i can sew it while chatting to my dearies or watching a film or listening to radio 4..................... ...........besides the small six point stars i'm making, i also began cutting out some big eight point stars a while ago from a template in an old patchwork book.............i have only made one big block for that so far but will have a proper starry progress post soon, i think............. .............thank you for visiting my little blog space, lovely readers..........it is so wonderful to see you and thank you for the sweet and interesting comments you leave, i enjoy reading them so much.......... wishing you all a wonderful, happy, sunny week......................back soon xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I've got to be honest. I'm a little jealous of all the ladies who have craft rooms. Or even a whole side of a room for crafts. My creative space is our home office/guest bedroom/preschool room (for my son)/sewing table/craft room. Sigh..... I would guess that I'm not alone in NOT having a "pin"-worthy craft space, though. Our catch-all space is decorated with a baseball motif, since it was originally my husband's office space. We've never gotten around to changing it up, so I decided to just ignore what's there and carve out a little space for my own. I knew a few bright colors and some inspiration would give me just the bump I need to stay creative. This is my little creative space: I bought the hoops and letters at Hobby Lobby, and the fabric was leftover scraps from my Sweet Scallops tote. The "beautiful things" printable came from Landee See, Landee Do. The "measure twice, cut once" came from Oh Sweet Joy. And I apologize, but I cannot remember where I got the "Keep Calm and Get the Sea Ripper" one from. This looks like a cabinet, but the door actually opens up to make a perfect sewing table, and the end props up for extra length. I'd love to paint this table but am a little scared. What color would you paint it? I was thinking maybe red or black.... I'll also admit that I do a lot of crafting at the kitchen table. If you're like me and have limited space for your sewing and crafting, don't hesitate to make it your own. Sharing at some of these parties this week: come check them out with me!
One of the most asked questions is how to attach eyes to a knitted toy. This little visual guide is here to help. Finishing a knitted toy off is probably the most important part of making toys as the face is what gives your creation a personality. We start where the head has been made…
