July 1st, 2017 is not only Canada Day, a federal holiday on which we celebrate the anniversary of the 1867 enactment of the Constitution - this year it's also an extra-special celebration, because Canada is now 150 years young. People throughout the country will be celebrating the holiday with parties, outings and beach days. No doubt many will be decorating their homes in red and white, the colours of the Canadian flag. As the central portion of the flag features a red maple leaf, the maple leaf is also prominent in Canada Day decor. To celebrate, I decorated our diy fireplace mantel for Canada Day with two projects - a Canadian flag garland and a framed maple leaf print. These are both simple yet festive projects to make with your Cricut Explore Air™ or other Cricut cutting machine. Materials Needed To Make Canada Day Maple Leaf Garland Cricut Explore Air Cricut 12x12 standardgrip adhesive cutting mat Cricut® cardstock, red Cricut white cardstock twine or string Steps To Make The Garland 1. In the Cricut Design Space, insert an image of a maple leaf. I had uploaded an image previously for my Cricut iron-on tank and tote bag projects. That maple leaf image now shows up as an option when I select Insert Images and search maple leaf. 2. Size the maple leaf to your desired size. The maple leaf I created for my Canada Day garland is 3.5 inches wide and 3.93 inches tall. Insert a circle. 3. Size the circle down to act as a hole to run the garland's twine through. Duplicate the circle. Drag circles to desired position. 4. Weld the circles together. 5. Select All and then Slice to cut out the circles. Delete the cut circles. 6. Duplicate the maple leaf to create as many as you need for your garland. 7. Cut with your Cricut using the desired colour of cardstock. For my Canada Day garland, I cut 10 red maple leaves and 9 red. 8. String all of the cut maple leaves onto twine (I used baker's twine) and hang. Done! Simple. Materials Needed To Make Canada Day Framed Maple Leaf Print Cricut Explore Air Cricut 12x12 standardgrip adhesive cutting mat Adhesive foil, red Faux leather, boxwood Picture frame Scissors Pencil Spray adhesive Steps To Make The Print 1. Use the picture frame's cardboard insert to trace out the background shape on the faux leather. Cut the faux leather out with your Cricut scissors. 2. Spray the cardboard picture frame insert with spray adhesive and adhere the faux leather to it. 3. Insert a maple leaf into the Cricut Design Space. It's there if you made the garland. 4. Size the maple leaf to your desired size. Cut out of red foil adhesive using your Cricut. Remove maple leaf from adhesive backing and adhere to faux leather background. 5. Insert your new easy Canada Day art into the frame. Done! (I ended up switching to a white picture frame because I found it worked better with my mantel's colour scheme.) I added a few Canada-related items to my mantel - a little jug from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, a seashell my parents gave me and a wee bagpiper a friend of my mom's in Nova Scotia gave me when I was a child. I also added some of my favourite novels written by Canadians, red and white jelly beans and a small bunch of red gerbera daisies. What different kinds of DIY projects can I make with the Cricut? If you just recently acquired a Cricut machine, you might be wondering just what kinds of projects you can make. As my Canada Day maple leaf garland made with cardstock demonstrates, you can make garlands. Many many garlands. I am garland-obsessed (as my daughter likes to point out). I made this fall pennant garland previously with my Cricut Explore Air, and also this gift tag ribbon garland using old Christmas cards. You can always visit Cricut Design Space™ for project ideas. There are Father's Day cards, cake toppers, designs to personalize your mugs and plates and text images to help you organize your craft supplies. More Canada Day Projects Another fun type of project to make with your Cricut is iron-on clothing, textiles or pillows. I made a couple of Canada-related projects for Victoria Day that would also be perfect for Canada Day. Check out this post to find out how I made a diy Canada eh? tote bag and a Made in Canada tank top using my Cricut Explore and red foil Cricut iron-on material. This was just a small sampling of the many DIY projects you can make with the Cricut. Let your imagination run wild! Will you be celebrating Canada Day? (Or your own country's birthday?) How will you decorate? Pin it for later: *This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase after following a link, Woman in Real Life may receive a small commission. Decide On Family Reunion Leadership It's best to organize a Family Reunion Committee. By organizing a committee you can decide whats best for the whole family and multiply brains is always better than have one leader who organize and run everything. Organize meetings of the reunion committee. At the first meeting you may wish to assign responsibilities and titles to go along with them. Consider electing people for the following roles. Any of these could be combined into the same person, or set up as sub-committees with multiple people. Family Historian. The person in charge of coordinating and presenting family history information. See the section on family history for reunions below. Reunion Secretary. This person should take notes at the meetings, but also keep everyone in the family informed of what's going on. They can be in charge of collecting mailing addresses, sending out e-mail notices, making phone calls, etc. Reunion Treasurer. It's good to have one person in charge of the money. Here are some tips on another site about Family Reunion Budgeting. Reunion Webmaster. Having a reunion webpage is almost essential these days. This may be an opportunity to recruit a younger family member to help. You might also consider putting individuals or groups in charge of the following: Food, Decorations, Games and Entertainment, and Cleaning. Select Type of Reunion One of the first decisions to make: what sort of party will you be hosting? For this decision you need to consider your family's culture, your budget, the number of people you're inviting, the mix of children and adults, and perhaps most importantly, your budget. There are two basic possibilities: Outdoor Barbecue or Picnic This is a popular choice if you have children attending. You might consider hosting the event at a state or local park. An extension on this idea is an overnight or weekend camping trip, which can be a lot of fun if it fits your family's style. A more limited version is a simple party at a family home or backyard. This is the most casual option. You don't even need to plan a meal if it's held at a late hour and there will not be many children. Drinks and hors oeuvres will suffice. To keep expenses low you can make it a pot-luck where every family brings a dish. Be sure to coordinate who is bringing what. It's easy to end up with too many desserts, no drinks, etc. Indoor Dinner or Reception This is a relatively more expensive and formal option and it's not ideal for children, but it may be more impressive for your older guests. One advantage of this approach is that you have restaurant, caterer, or event facility staff take care of a lot of the work involved. Here's something to consider. It's becoming popular to coordinate a reunion with another family event, such as a birthday, anniversary, or wedding, or simply a holiday such as the Fourth of July or Christmas. Many of the same family members might be attending this event anyway so it can save you a lot of expense and planning effort. By making it clear the event is also a reunion you may attract many guests who would not otherwise plan to attend. Although you may be worried about slighting the couple getting married, for example, by turning their wedding into a reunion, they may be honored by the extended family group and welcome the opportunity to defray the cost. Promote your Family Reunion How will you inform your family members and promote the reunion? Below are sections on sending invitations, creating a reunion webpage, and using social networking sites such as Facebook. Send Electronic Invitations You must send out invitations as soon as possible, if only as "save the date" on Etsy notices. Paper Invitations It is traditional to send paper invitations or cards. If it's a large reunion you could get custom printed invitations. Look up "Stationery" in the yellow pages or try the Google search. Get a Custom Family Reunion Website Creating a website for your reunion is a great way to help keep people informed. It's practical for family members who are internet savvy. They will love having a place to find the latest information about the date and location, who to contact, etc. It can also be a place to post questions and comments and share family photos and stories. It's east to get a custom website these days with companies who offer custom built websites at prices that will fit any family's budget. What I love about Puppetown Productions is that they will update your website for free for up-to six months after the initial build of your site. We used them last year for our family reunion and the entire family found the site helpful and useful. Use Facebook Social networking sites can be a great organizational tool to supplement your reunion web design. If some of your family members use Facebook this is recommended, but other social networking sites may be just as useful and more efficient if it's what your family members are used to using. Facebook can help you organize simply by serving as a place to exchange private messages or "wall" posts. You can also create a Facebook Group for your reunion and/or a Facebook Event Reunion Activity Ideas What will you do at the reunion? The main idea, of course, is to mingle, catch up, and get to know each other better. Here are some ideas for breaking the ice and making this easier and more fun. Welcome Family Members It's a nice idea to plan to give a little welcome speech. You can use this opportunity to talk about the day's activities you can also list the activities on your custom website . You might also want to list some of the people that are attending. You can recognize certain individuals or families that have traveled from far away or who might be less familiar. This can be a good way to introduce people to each other. Another way to welcome people and help introduce them to each other is to print up a guest list or directory. Including contact information is a good idea, so people can keep in touch after the reunion. If you want to get fancy you can include photos. This blog is written by Mary-jo Rootin

This is a project I have been working on since June. It's taken me a while, but I am SO happy with how it turned out!! Better than I expected! I'm not sure what to call it yet - it's a quiet book because it's made of cloth, but it's a flip/body/mix & match book... So for now, it's a quiet {flip} book! **UPDATE** The pattern is NOW AVAILABLE for purchase!! Want to see how I did it? If not, then I'm not really sure what to tell you... {awkward...} For those that do, here we go!! I started by getting on the computer and drew/illustrated eight different "people". I divided the page into thirds - heads, arms & body, and legs. I printed out a template to use as a guide to cut the fabric. I also printed out all the people to trace & stitch later. I bought some thin, white cotton fabric and cut the 3 different sizes 'tabs'. (I would tell you dimensions, but I am still figuring out the pattern.) Since there will be 8 complete 'pages', I needed to cut out a front and back piece for each tab. I ended up with a total of 48 tabs (16 top, 16 middle, 16 bottom). I also cut out one piece of Warm & Natural batting for each tab. Sounds confusing, but hopefully it will all make sense soon. Next, I got out my handy light board and traced all of my people onto their respective tabs with a water erasable marking pen. I started with the head, then left the fabric there and then traced the body. Same with the legs, just to make sure they lined up & that I was tracing everything centered. I whipped out my embroidery hoop, huge bag of thread in every color & found a comfy spot on the couch. Then I stitched. And stitched...and stitched some more. Almost every night. Thank goodness for DVR! :) For more instructions on tracing & stitching, see my Fairy Stitchery Tutorial here. Rinse your stitcheries to get rid of the marker and lay flat to dry. Once they are dry I recommend ironing. That should take care of most wrinkles. Sometimes the wrinkles don't completely come out, even with steam. I did figure out that if you spray your pieces with water with a spray bottle (just enough to be damp), then press your iron on the wrinkled area, it makes a huge difference in getting most of the stubborn wrinkles out. To finish the tabs, I placed the cotton fabric right sides together (though it didn't really seem to have a right or wrong side) and then sewed them together leaving the left side open to flip. Be sure to clip corners so they will be nice & pointy. And no, you aren't seeing things. I did change my logo in the middle of this project. I was just too lazy to go back & update the previous photos... don't judge me. I chose leaving the left side open because that will be the side in the binding. I folded in the edge & sewed it up. I'm sure there's lots of better ways to do this, but this method works fine for me! Here is the pile of all the finished tabs! I recommend ironing after this step, too. You don't have to, but it makes the next step a little easier. I love when it's time to get the crayons out & color away! It's so fun! Don't be afraid to mix colors like I did on the pants here. Especially if you want a specific color that you don't have with your crayons. I usually try to match the thread color as close as possible. Just be careful when using a dark color crayon next to a lighter thread so you don't accidentally color over it! Next, it was time to make the covers! I laid out one set of the tabs & measured the length & width, then added about an inch on each side. I had some leftover purple sparkly fabric from my Christmas stockings that I thought would be perfect for this project! I put a layer of batting in between two pieces of fabric for each cover. Then sewed right sides together leaving about a 3 inch gap, then flipped and sewed the hole closed. With the help of my fantastic helper of a husband, we marked with the water erasable pen where the holes needed to be to bind the pages together. Then I just poked through the dots with a seam ripper, making a hole big enough for the rings to fit through. After much searching, I finally found some SETS of eyelets in the right size. I found plenty of the one-sided ones. I wanted both front & back to look nice and didn't want the fabric to snag on anything if I had used the one-sided eyelets. Eyelets are VERY simple to attach. My fingers are a little bruised after putting in 60 of these babies, but other than that it was so simple! I would be happy to do a tutorial on this if anyone is interested. But for now I will just run you through it. Since I already had holes made, I just needed to clip a little into the hole to be able to push one side of the eyelet in. Then I flipped the fabric over to the back & place the smaller eyelet onto the larger one. Using the eyelet tool, the eyelet face-down on your anvil, tap the stick-tool-thingy with a hammer a few times and that's it! I put the rings through and had so much fun flipping through it. Can't wait to show it off & hope my daughter loves it as much as I do! Here's a few of the "people" of my quiet {flip} book! I made a pirate, superhero, mermaid, ballerina, hula girl, clown, cowboy and a fairy! Since all the heads, bodies & legs are separate tabs, you can mix things up!! So fun!!
These crystal stars made from pipe cleaners and a simple borax solution are SO COOL. And they're really easy to make! Leave them overnight and crystals magically form! Borax Crystal Star Ornaments OK you guys, I think I've fallen in love with another kids activity. These borax ornaments are so easy to make, and they look SO COOL when they're done! It takes a few hours to grow the crystals, but the actual work involved with putting them together is really fast.
