A common issue with hand-dyed yarns is that it’s sometimes very difficult to get two matching skeins, even if they came from the same dye pot. The first time I encountered this was when I was shopping at the yarn store in which I worked. We had some lovely hand-dyed sock yarn from a fairly well know

Notes This whimsical gnome can be used as a decorative ‘wrapping’ for a Christmas gift. Each size (small and large) comes in 2 lengths. Large gnome is perfect for a bottle of wine (champagne), and small gnome can be used for a jar of your favorite jam (small bottle of flavored vinegar or oil). The gnome is knit in the round as one piece, starting with the face, knitting up. The body is knit from the face down. The gnome is slightly felted, the beard added after felting. Gauge: the exact gauge is not as important, since felting will help to adjust the size of the final product. However, the yardage may vary considerably depending on you gauge. If I use the same color for hat and body, one skein of main color is sufficient for the small gnome (the hat is finished first, the body is knit until one runs out of yarn) and 2 skeins for the large. Techniques used: provisional cast on, knit and purl stitch, knit in the round, hem as you knit, bobble. Additional materials A small amount of bulky yarn for the beard (about 5 yards) and a small amount of poly stuffing (for the nose). Belt (optional): A small amount of black and brown yarn will be needed for the belt. After about one third of the body is finished (down from the face), knit to the center of the gnome’s front, cut yarn; switch to black and knit one full round, cast on 10 st for the belt “flap”, turn work. Continue to knit the belt back and forth using garter stitch until desired width of the belt (3-4 garter ridges). On the next row, knit to the last 10 sts, cast off. Cut black yarn leaving about 3 inches. Join body yarn and continue knitting in the round until desired length. Secure belt flap with the attached length of black yarn and embroider the buckle with brown yarn (see pictures). Variations Use beads for the buckle for extra pizzazz. For a “wilder” looking beard, attach it before felting, shape well while drying. Beading For extra festive look, beads can be added to the hat either knitted in (by sliding a bead on a stitch before knitting it) or embroidered after felting.

Winterfell Cloaks Catelyn’s Lament They are gone, like dried leaves on Winter’s cruel wind… Well do I recall the morn Ned and the girls left, dreaming of the adventures ahead. And where are they now? Ned gone forever (save for that grisly box), and the fate of my girls still unknown. I pray to the Seven that Lady Brienne of Tarth can find them, and exchange the Kingslayer as ransom! And what of our home? Winterfell now burned and looted by the faithless Theon Greyjoy, and Bran and Rickon missing – I pray, not dead! Only Robb is left to me now, and he cannot forgive me for dispatching Lady Brienne with his prisoner… My good brother Edmure visited my solitary chamber and asked what could he bring to ease my despair? “Send for wool” I said, “so I can make cloaks for the girls! If I have no occupation I shall soon run mad!” So he dispatched a dozen ravens to the Southlands of Malabrigo in quest of the precious Merino. But “Dark Wings, Dark Words,” the Maesters say, and so it was proved; the accursed birds returned bearing only the dreaded message: “Out of Stock!” Hearing of my plight, our faithful Bannerman Ser Michael of the Arts & Craftlands came to my aid with armfuls of soft yarn: “Tis only acrylic, M’Lady, but p’raps will serve?” Indeed it will. (And much lighter on the Tully coffers, which are greatly strained of late by this wretched war!) So I crochet in my lonely chamber – a Cherry Red Poncho for Arya, who is never still and will not abide ribbons and fussy closures, and a Rose Capelet for Sansa, to match the roses which bloom in her pretty cheeks. (I would make a cloak for Lady Brienne as well, but fear that even Ser Michael’s Vast Stores would not be sufficient to clothe the Maid of Tarth…)

I wanted a simple little shelf that could help me out with kitchen space by moving my collection of tea off of the counter. I realized even in my small kitchen, I had all that unused space underneath the cabinets that I could take advantage of! So I created this “stowaway” hanging shelf that collapses down when I don’t need it but hangs there displaying my tea selections when I do! This pattern uses one or two skeins of most basic worsted cotton yarns, and a few metal rings available at most craft stores. It would make for a great gift for someone moving into a new place! Gauge is also flexible if you want to switch up hoop sizes, use different yarns, or play around with the size of the entire shelf!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. Aside from the stark white snow softly falling and completely blanketing the ground, reflecting the twinkling lights set up everywhere you look, I'm completely enamored with the spirit of the season, the spirit of giving. To give some context, my mom is an incredibly giving person and always showers those she loves with gifts whenever she can. Not only would I get many birthday and Christmas presents, but I'd get some random just because gifts as well. She applied this same giving spirit to her own friends, her coworkers and ever to

Summer is finally here and it’s time for some fun in the sun! I love wearing breezy, light layers when it’s warm out. I’ve never felt super comfortable showing a ton of skin, so my wardrobe is full of things I can throw on over a swimsuit or pair of shorts and tank. That’s exactly what I designed the Jules Poncho for. It’s a lightweight, mesh crochet poncho that can be worn a bunch of different ways. Throw it on for a day at the beach or for shopping at the farmer’s market. My favorite thing about this crochet poncho is how easily it will transition to fall. This poncho is made using a sport weight yarn, and a combination of single crochet and Y stitches. It has a mesh appearance and is perfectly lightweight […]
