It all started when I was a kid. I remember sitting on the floor in the living room at my grandparents’ house and learning how to crochet. My first crochet project was a mauve dishcloth. I don’t have it anymore, but one thing I remember about it was how uneven the edges were. My crochet...

(See tutorial video in English: https://youtu.be/UdmVSIxbWqw) Eräässä käsitöitten Facebook-ryhmässä löysin maton, joka oli tehty virkkaamalla matonkuteet yhteen erillisellä langalla.

Very soft texture! These are made from a cotton "twist" yarn, similar to baker's twine, they have a high absorbancy rate. The color ratio in the twist makes these rags "unique" in design and an attractive addition to all decor. The lightweight pattern provides a less bulky weight - making them suitable when used on face, softer "baby" skin and fine glassware. Meticulously crocheted in worsted weight cotton dishie yarn, these high quality dish rags will hold a tight shape, use after use, and they will last a very long time! Made with 100% Cotton. Each Measures Approximately 7" x 7". Machine wash cool, line or tumble dry low. Use non-chlorine bleach on colors. Due to the nature of cotton, they will shrink and tighten after washing. Medium to high shrink ratio. Many colors and styles are available! Please check back often for new and restocked colors. How to turn old t-shirts into beautiful crochet rugs - crochet pattern.
If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you probably already know that I LOVE to make rugs for my home. I have KNIT several of them over the past several years and they are some of my favorite things that I make! I always get questions about crocheting rag rugs and I am happy to say I have worked out the kinks and figured out a way to do so. Here's a tutorial on how to make one of your own! MAKE THE YARN: First, you need to make fabric yarn. This is a good way to use up a lot of scraps fairly fast. I'm always a proponent of that! It's also a good way to use up fabric that you don't care for anymore. Not that that would happen to any of us.....ahem! Gather or cut strings of any length that are about 3/4" to 1" wide. Use quilting cotton, selvages, vintage sheets, or any other random fabric of the same weight. I would stay away from anything thicker than quilting cotton such as linen blends, canvas, etc. They are difficult to crochet with because they are just too bulky. Try to keep the yarn approximately the same width/thickness throughout. If your yarn is significantly skinnier in places you will have thin spots in your rug. Overlap two pieces of fabric and stitch together. Back stitch if you like. (I'd recommend it, based on working experience, but it's your choice.) Loop the fabric to the side, overlap another string to the end and sew in place. No need to cut your threads, just keep joining the strings in this manner until you have a bunch. Remove the whole thing from your sewing machine and cut the threads between the strips. I enlist my kids to do this task if they are around. They love it. (Sometimes.) Roll it up into a big ball. Now you have fabric yarn! A lot of times my kids will swipe it because they like to play with it before I crochet it. Thankfully it rolls back up pretty easily. :) CROCHET THE RUG: The most important thing to remember when making this is to crochet LOOSELY. Use a P hook (11.5 mm) to chain 40 stitches plus one for turning. Single crochet into each stitch (I stitch into the front loop) all the way across. When you get to the end of the row, chain one. Turn the work. Continue to single crochet in to the front loop of each stitch all the way across the row. Again, chain one, turn the work, repeat. If you run out of fabric yarn, simply make another ball and attach it with a quick pass through the sewing machine. Keep crocheting in the same manner until the piece is the desired length. Knot and weave in the end. I wish you could reach through the screen and touch it because the texture is wonderful! This rug measures about 23" x 31". It is scrap project #61/101! I really enjoyed crocheting this rag rug. It seemed to go quicker than knitting did, it was easier to manage the bulk and I liked working with one stitch on a hook rather than 50 stitches on a set of needles. There was a lot less wrestling! I'm already crocheting a second rug and I'm dreaming about making a gigantic one for my front entryway. That would be a little bit crazy, but I just might do it anyway. If you make a rug using this tutorial, I'd love to see it! And, as always....Happy Monday to you!
Crochet dishcloths are these special elements that will make your kitchen look fashionable. They are great because they are quick to crochet!
This is my first attempt at a blog tutorial so I would appreciate any feedback. My daughter wants a waste paper basket for her craft room/ spare room - and I can do baskets. I wanted to make one from recycled materials and toyed with the idea of weaving one with old jeans and t-shirts then I came upon a blog showing me how to crochet baskets from t-shirts. However it says that the curve in her baskets comes as a natural result of the elasticity of the fabric used. Back to square one as I wanted a straight sided basket. Remembering I had yarn made from old sheets upstairs in my craft room that I had made to use on my rug loom and not used, I decided to try crocheting with it and adapt the pattern to suit. The first photo shows the base and the point at which I decided it was a goer. To make this for yourself you first need the yarn. Measure along the top of your sheet and snip at 1" intervals. You can then tear down the length of the sheet quite easily. I have done this with both polycotton and flannelette sheets. Snip a small slit lengthways in each end of each strip and holding a piece in each hand join by pushing the lefthand piece through slit in the righthand piece and then threading the other end of the righthand piece through the lefthand slit. Pull tight and continue until you have used all the pieces and have a large ball ready to go. This creates a continuous piece of yarn that doesn't have bulky knots in it. I hope this photograph helps explain what I have been saying: I used 2 balls for this, one made from a double sheet we got as a wedding present 26 years ago and one made from a double duvet cover I bought in a charity shop. You will also need a crochet hook, I used a 10mm one. OK, now for the pattern (written in English crochet terms): Chain 2 6 dc in 2nd chain from hook Continue in a spiral, marking the beginning of each round with a thread (orange in my photographs) Crochet 2dc in each sc in round dc in next dc, crochet 2dc in next dc, repeat around dc in next 2 dc, 2dc in next dc, repeat dc in next 3 dc, 2dc in next dc, repeat dc in next 4 dc, 2dc in next dc, repeat dc in next 5 dc, 2dc in next dc, repeat dc in next 6 dc, 2dc in next dc, repeat Continue with the pattern increase until the basket base is the size you want. Mine was 10" and ended with dc in next 8dc, 2dc in next dc. DC in the back loop of each stitch in round. From now on you are making the sides of your basket and will be crocheting through both loops of each stitch again. Keep moving your marker up as you go so you know where the start of the round is, change yarns if you want stripes. When you have reached the required height of you basket, you can do a slip stitch to finish or add handles. I decided to put on short handles. In the second last row I chained 10 and missed 8 stitches dc'ed to the opposite handle space, ch 10 and missed 8 dc and dc to the beginning of the row. Next round dc all round including in each ch, slip stitch to finish, pull end of yarn though the loop and hide it in your basketry! Experiment with sizes. Make long handles for a shopping bag, or shorter sides and no handles for a fruit basket. Just make bases for coasters and placemats. Remember everything you make like this will be washable! Have fun playing, I'm going to - and will be casting an eye over the sheets in the airing cupboard soon!

After sewing together miles of strips....... and using the simplest of crochet stitches (sc), a rag rug was born. I love the pretty wate...
Reminiscent of old fashioned rag rugs, a rug crocheted with fabric has an amazing look. The fabric yarn made from rags or fabric adds bright colors to your piece, and the chunkiness of the "yarn" creates thick pieces, perfect for placing as rugs on floors.
Look, I know not everyone is going to get excited about creating an Amish Knot Rag Rug. If you are taking that position then you are just not appreciating the skill itself. You have to be aware of the fact that this pattern is not left to making rag rugs alone.

Hello! When you have very limited storage space, you need to get creative. I got a nice big basket for our board games at Home Goods. The problem was that it was not enough. I needed one more basket to contain our ever growing collection , but the prices of big baskets are outrageous. About a year ago someone gave me a big amount of craft supplies from a state. It included tons of scraps. Most of the fabric I had no use for, until I had an idea... to make a basket. So, I cut long strips of fabric two inches wide. I folded the the borders, so it would make a "clean" basket. If you want a ragged looking basket, skip this part. I made balls as I was folding. I think if I make another project like this one, I will sew the pieces together. This time I just tied. With the big pieces of fabric I just left about an inch or two on each side making a long strip. I am sorry, I have trouble expressing myself in English sometimes. You can see this step here . Anyways, I started to make the basket. Let me tell you, I am not a crochet expert. I had to call my Mom in Brazil. Here is how it looked like after working a while. And a little bit more. It is pretty cool to crochet with fabric. Goes fast! :) The boring part is to cut all those strips. As I said before I am not good on crochet. I had some trouble shaping the basket, but at the end was not so bad! I like the colors and the texture. I am happy that I could use part of the scraps, and make it into something useful for my home. It was really a fun project! Thanks for stopping by! Ana Paula.

Lest you think that all I do these days is sit around making wreaths, let me tell you, there's been plenty of star making as well! I finished my 50 star wholesale order and sent them off to Alabama yesterday. They will be sold as part of a new collaboration with this adorable website: http://nightowlpapergoods.com. ~*~ ~*~ While I was searching for some supply or another, I came across some of the primitive rag balls that I had set aside last year. The stars made from them really showcase the gorgeous colors and feedsack fabrics, and I'm excited to be able to offer these in sosorosey again. ~*~ ~*~ A "baby star" customer from 2010 came back for another one for their new baby girl! ~*~ ~*~ And the guidance counselor at Sophie's school just had a little boy, so this will be sent off to her as she enjoys her maternity leave. ~*~ I finished up my 5 potholder order this week, too. So now maybe, just maybe, I can bring my 2012 ornament idea to life. Stay tuned for that - it's gonna be a cute one if I can work out the details! Enough about me- what have you been working on this week?
