Art has had a big influence in our lives and one of the ways art has affected many aspects of our lives is by having an influence on the mundane. It has the tendency to take the mundane and making it into a work of art. The use of thread in various forms of art is something that has become part of our life. That is why there are many options for those who want to dabble in art while still being practical. There are many simple sewing projects for amateurs that people can try to get started in this kind of art.
I love shuttle tatting. I actually prefer shuttle tatting to needle tatting. Shuttle tatting is a little harder than tatting with a needle. Since I've already done a needle tatting post I decided to do a post about shuttle tatting for beginners. Tatting is a beautiful old-fashioned art and it has been around for centuries.

This delicate bracelet is made by Mekik OYA which is Turkish traditional lace knitting with meaningful motives. Oya edging, which appears all over Anatolia in various forms and motifs, has different names depending on the means employed: needle, crochet hook, shuttle, hairpin etc. Mekik oya is produced more by women in the villages and provincial towns, using a small shuttle made of bone in the old days. Either one or two colors are used. It is also famous as tatting lace. Material: Nylon yarn + beads Length: about 16cm Oya shop DAISY is located in Cappadocia, Central Turkey. DAISY's OYA accessories are all handmade by local ladies and it is our purpose to introduce them to the world and support their work.

It's been a long time since you've heard from me. I've been quietly tatting and processing life. Finding it difficult to figure out what to say and how to say it, I know we have lost a wonderful woman in the tatting world. This then is a small tribute to the Tatting Goddess, Gina. Never having met her, it was a uniquely vicarious loss. She was a wonderful presence in this cyber world and always supportive in her comments. All the way to her end here on this earth she was so very supportive and kind. So, Rest In Peace dear, Gina! You will be missed. As I said, I've been tatting. I believe this project is appropriate to show you with this tribute to Gina as it definately will depict the continuation of life and our art. Here is a look at the next project... I'm working on a baby bonnet....and of course, I'm not following anybody's pattern. I am using a couple patterns published out there for the base of the work. You may recognize the 'Down the Garden Path' by Pam Palmer as well as pattern #50 from the Catherine Austin book "A New Twist on Tatting". I'm combining the patterns to create the top of the bonnet. I will then create something for the back of the bonnet. I hope to begin that part later tomorrow or later in the week. I may have several questions as I approach the back. I'll check back in and keep you posted on the progress. Until then, please be safe and treat yourself with respect!! John

My tatted cotter pin link tutorial is available as a free PDF. Click HERE to download the 2 page file. I hope you'll have fun with this technique! It's another idea to play with. My report on wearing the bracelet for awhile: Using a tatted ring as a toggle loop didn't work. The toggle bar fell out. So, I added a proper metal toggle clasp, which does work well. The tatting tends to lengthen with wearing, so for a bracelet make it just a little bit shorter than needed. It will stretch to a comfortable size. The tatted links hold their shape surprisingly well, considering that they're only fiber! My bracelet after wearing, with the finished clasp. Another tatted cotter pin bracelet.

After 8 tatted rings, leave 15cm of thread and cut. Distribute petals around the circle, and tie firmly the ends. Then stuff both ends in a needle and sew the bead in the center. Finally, fill the metal with dense crochet points, tie and cut.
