Veneration of the Holy Cross Mark 8:34b - 9:1 By St. Theophylact, Archbishop of Ochrid and Bulgaria 34-37. And when He had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, He said unto them, "Whosoever desireth to follow after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whosoever desireth to save his life, shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and the Gospels, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Since Peter had rebuked Him for wanting to be crucified, the Lord called the people unto Him, and said in the hearing of all, but directing His words mostly towards Peter, "Do you find fault with Me, Peter, because I take up the cross? I say to you, that neither you, nor anyone else, will be saved unless you die for the sake of goodness and truth." See that Christ does not compel a man to die on a cross against his own will. Instead He said, "Whosoever desireth". The Lord is saying: "I compel no one. I invite him to something good, not to something bad to which he must be forced. Whoever does not want these things is not worthy of them." We can learn what it means to deny oneself if we understand what it means to deny another. He who denies another is he who, when he sees his brother, or servant, or father, being flogged or even murdered, does not turn towards him and pity him in his suffering, but acts as if he were a stranger to him. In this same manner the Lord wants us to show no pity towards our own bodies, so that even if we are flogged, or worse, let it make no difference to us. Let him take up his cross, that is, accept a most shameful death, for at that time to die on a cross was considered the most shameful of deaths. But since many were crucified for being bandits, the Lord added to the crucifixion something else: that one ought to have virtue. This is what it means to "follow Me". Although His command that one give oneself over to death seemed hard and cruel, the Lord straightway shows this commandment is given out of love for mankind. For "whosoever shall lose his life for My sake shall find" life. (1) (But the death of a condemned man, or of one who hangs himself, is not for Christs sake and brings no such reward.) And, on the contrary, he who appears to have saved his life, far from finding life, shall lose it by not remaining steadfast during his time of martyrdom. Do not say to Me, "But he has saved his life"—it means nothing. Even if you say that he has gained the whole world as well, it is of no benefit. No one can exchange money for his salvation, for if that were so, a man who had gained the world but lost his soul, could, while burning in the flames of hell, use his money to buy innocence. But at that time and in that place no such trade can be made. Here let us shut the mouths of those who say, following Origen, that all the souls in hell will be restored [and reunited with those in heaven] after they have been punished in accordance with their sins. (2) Let them hear that there is no exchange that can be made there for ones soul. No one is kept in hell as a punishment. Rather, it is the weight of his own sins which holds him there. 38-9:1. "Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of Man be ashamed, when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." And He said unto them, "Verily I say unto you, that there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power." Intellectual faith does not suffice, but confession of faith with ones mouth is required as well. Since man himself is two-fold, let his sanctification be two-fold as well. The soul is sanctified by faith, but the body is sanctified by confessing. "Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed" to confess that the Crucified One is his God, "of him also" shall the Crucified One "be ashamed". For the Lord shall judge that man to be an unworthy servant, when He comes with glory, escorted by the angels, and no longer in lowly form. At the second coming He will not appear, as He did before, to be of base origin and circumstance, and an object of scorn. Since He speaks of His own glory, He desires to show that He is not vainly boasting, and says, "There be some of them that stand here," namely, Peter, James, and John, "who shall not die until" I have shown them at the Transfiguration the glory with which I shall appear at the second coming. For the Transfiguration was nothing less than a foreshadowing of the second coming, and as He appeared in radiance then, so will He shine at the second coming, as will also all the righteous. 1. In this passage of St. Mark, and in the following commentary, the single Greek word, psyche, has been translated as either "life" or "soul" as it has both these meanings. 2. This false teaching of Origen, apokotastasis, the general restoration of all fallen creation, was condemned by the Church as heresy at the Fifth Ecumenical Council held at Constantinople in 553 AD. Handmade 14" sash saw, 12 points/inch, Texas mesquite handle sized for large hands (say a 9-10 glove size), hybrid tooth pattern filed for both crosscut and rip cuts (10° rake, 12° pitch), 0.025" plate, 0.034" kerf, brass back. Blade depth 3 1/2" heel, 3 1/2" toe. A fast cutting saw meant for smooth cuts in hardwoods or dry softwoods. 25° hang angle (the angle of the handle to the blade). Mesquite is a beautiful wood and has a pronounced cross grain making it resistant to splitting or breaking. The hybrid filing works fine for both cross cutting and ripping and is the choice of most woodworkers who don't want the expense of two saws dedicated to specific cuts. In my shop this is the work horse that I reach for most unless I am making fine or delicate cuts. Before each saw is shipped I make test cuts to assure that it cuts fast and straight and leaves a smooth finish. I also offer custom made saws where you specify the handle material (mesquite, quarter sawn oak, walnut, cherry or wood provided by you), handle size, handle hang angle, handle finish, tooth geometry (rip, crosscut, hybrid), custom filing angles, blade size and thickness, brass or bronze back. As I am somewhat opinionated I am happy to make recommendations on any of the above. I am a lifetime woodworker and have a strong preference for saws the way I make them and would be glad to tell you why. Right now I have about a 6-month backlog mostly due to difficulty obtaining materials. Contact me at wchobson [!at] icloud.com.

To sharpen hand saws I follow several steps, including jointing the saw teeth (leveling) filing the teeth (shaping), setting the teeth (bending), and stoning the teeth (Deburring).
I take great pride in the fact that all of my creations are cut by hand using a scroll saw. Then they are sanded, stained or painted and finished with my own hands. It is truly amazing the pieces of art you can create with your own hands when you put a great deal of time and patience into your work! This is a scroll saw cut wooden cross with an Ascension theme to it. Some of the highlighted items on the cross are: Jesus, angels playing trumpets, people praying, crosses, shepherds, sheep and the wise men. The size of the cross is 15 1/4" tall by 10 1/2" wide. The design was cut out of ¼” oak plywood. Once I apply the pattern I am going to use to the wood I then cut out the exterior shape of the piece. The next thing I do is carefully drill all of the holes into the oak wood that represent areas that I will cut out. Then it is time to thread the thin saw blade in each hole and follow the pattern to remove that section. Once that hole is completed it is time to re thread the blade in the next hole. This process can be as few as 3 holes per cutting up to hundreds of holes. Once I am done cutting the design it is sanded smooth. First I use 200 grit sandpaper and then work my way up to 400 grit to provide a super smooth finish. Following the sanding I blow all of the dust off of the cutting and then applied two coats of golden oak stain. When the stain is completely dry I then spray on three coats of polyurethane. The polyurethane helps to protect the stained finish and also gives the wood a glossy shine. The backer of each piece is cut from ¼” birch plywood and then it is also sanded smooth. First I use 200 grit sandpaper and then work my way up to 400 grit to provide a super smooth finish. Following the sanding I blow off all of the dust from the backer piece and it is ready to be painted. I spray on two coats of black spray paint. I have found that black paint allows the details to show up the best in the cutting. The next step is to glue the design piece to the backer. I allow the glue to set up 24 hours and then I work to remove small bits of fuzz that the polyurethane process leaves behind on the design. The last thing to do is attach a sawtooth hanger on the backer so that once you receive the cross it is ready for you to hang up and enjoy for years to come! This cross would look great hanging in the home of anyone who enjoys expressing there religious freedom. The pattern that I used to create this cross was designed by Scroller LTD. I love creating fun unique items that can be displayed in your home for everyone to enjoy!

This is a handmade scroll saw cut cross that has a law enforcement theme. Some of the items that are highlighted on the cross are: a police officers badge, a police officers cap, a nightstick, lock and keys, handcuffs, two handguns, targets, a six point star, the words "Serve and Protect", a police car, tracking dog, and officer arresting a man, and a prisoner in a jail cell. As you can see there is a lot of details highlighting all of the important features of law enforcement. The size of the cross is 16 1/2" x 10 1/2". It was cut out of 1/4" oak plywood and then it was sanded smooth. After sanding I applied two coats of oak stain to the wood to highlight the beauty of the wood. Next I applied three coats of poly to help protect the finish and to give the cross a shine. The backer of the cross was cut from 1/4" birch plywood and it was painted black to highlight the details in the cutting. Finally I attached a sawtooth hanger to the back of the cross and it is ready to be hung up and displayed with price in your home or office! This law enforcement cross would look great hanging in the home or office of anyone who has served in the law enforcement field. This cross was designed by Sue Mey.

The top visitor nations were Germany, Italy, France, Turkey and the Netherlands. The top exhibitor nations were Germany, Italy, China, France and Turkey. Countries such as Egypt, China, Indonesia, Kosovo, Luxembourg, Moldova and Thailand contributed to the expansion of exhibitors, among others. In times of emerging AI technologies, increasing legislative requirements and high energy costs, both trade fairs offered the markets the most important international marketplace for product innovations along the textile value chain at the right time: "With an overwhelming atmosphere and growth in size, exhibitors and visitors, Techtextil and Texprocess made it clear: textile innovation for a wide range of industries can only be found in this global width and strength here in Frankfurt. The textile industry, through both leading trade fairs, becomes the driving force and enabler for cross-industry transformations and a globally future-proof economy", said Detlef Braun, member of the Executive Board, Messe Frankfurt GmbH. 75 percent of visitors - including producers, engineers from various industries, architects, processors, industrial designers, clothing and construction material manufacturers, R&D decision-makers, medical developers, product developers and other top executives - thoroughly leveraged the cross-networking opportunities, spanning from the preliminary stages of Techtextil to the wide array of processing and clothing technologies offered at Texprocess. The trade fair duo thereby set the stage for numerous international collaborations and business initiations, fostering innovation across sectors and making them market-ready. Visitor satisfaction at a very high level Exhibitors and visitors made intensive use of the trade fairs as efficient sales channels, made new international contacts and gained a concentrated overview of the global spectrum of high-tech textiles that can be used across industries, as well as the latest machines and technologies for textile processing. Visitor satisfaction at both events was at a very high level: 95 percent of visitors were satisfied overall with their trade fair visit, achieved their trade fair objectives and were impressed by the range of exhibitors. 20 years of Techtextil: biggest edition sets new standards In its anniversary edition, Techtextil set a record in terms of size and underlined the dynamic growth and innovative strength of the textile industry. Studies confirm the enormous future prospects of technical textiles: Fortune Business Insights estimates the global market at 225.99 billion dollars in 2023 and forecasts an increase to 346.67 billion dollars by 2030. Similar forecasts by Allied Market Research expect an increase to 331.8 billion dollars by 2032. Within the EU textile industry, technical textiles are the most dynamic drivers of demand in sectors such as medicine, agriculture, construction, outdoor clothing and automotive. Techtextil is the only platform in the world to showcase the entire range of high-tech textiles across 12 application areas. In addition to examples such as medical textiles with a virus barrier, fibre structures for sound insulation in the construction industry or technical nonwovens for the automotive industry, these also included innovative world firsts in 2024: from the latest weaving technology with an open shed from the start-up Casmue, a new type of coating for self-cooling textiles from the German Institutes of Textile and Fibre Research Denkendorf to recyclable insulating textiles made of bio-based aerogel fibres from the start-up SA-Dynamics. Techtextil also placed a clear focus on sustainable action and production. More than 15 percent of the exhibitors presented natural fibres and materials. "Techtextil is the most important industry event of the year for us and went really well for us in 2024. Once again, we were able to showcase our technology expertise to visitors. The special aspect about this global industry meeting place is that it not only brings us potential new customers, but we also meet our partner companies and suppliers here. The connection with Texprocess creates fantastic synergies. Techtextil 2024 has made it clear that the industry is on the move and sustainability is the overarching theme. We were surprised and pleased that we were visited by a particularly large number of young visitors - students as well as young innovators - with very specific requests for cooperation, also with regard to our sustainable solutions," says Holger Michael Steingräber, senior vice president Global Marketing & Communications, Freudenberg Performance Materials. "Techtextil 2024 has shown: We are on the right track with investments in circular economy. The response to our scalable solution that recycles garments into multifibres was downright enthusiastic. The trade fair went very well for us. We met existing and new customers, especially from Scandinavia and Southern Europe. What we really appreciate about Techtextil: Our end customers come to the show and exchange ideas with us in order to understand the benefits of our developments for their employees. And last but not least, Techtextil is simply the right place to present your innovation," says Amaury Sartorius, managing director, Klopman. "Techtextil is extremely important and very valuable for us. We see and feel the market, meet our customers, suppliers and new interested parties from all over the world, especially from Europe and overseas. Sustainability is the hot topic here in the exhibition halls and is much more present than it was two years ago. Textile companies around the world are working hard to reduce CO2 emissions and comply with CSR regulations. The tightening European regulations are playing a large part in this. Accordingly, the demand here at Techtextil for our sustainable developments, such as our PVC alternative with fifty percent CO2 savings, is strong," says Michèle Sioen, CEO, Sioen Industries. "Techtextil was an outstanding experience for us at Lenzing. The trade fair was very well attended and we were able to maintain valuable customer contacts and gain new ones. The diversity of visitors was particularly impressive - from experienced experts to curious students who came to find out about our innovative and sustainable fibre technologies. It is clearly noticeable that the topic of recycling is becoming increasingly important. Techtextil was a complete success for us," says Oliver Spöcker, global sales director, Lenzing AG. Texprocess strengthens its pioneering role in digitalisation and automation At Texprocess, a vast array of cutting-edge machines, processes, and services for textile and apparel processing were exhibited, spanning from innovative AI technologies to design systems and visualization tools, along with highly efficient cutting and state-of-the-art sewing machines. Texprocess presented pivotal solutions harnessing the latest technologies. "For the Texprocess exhibitors, this trade fair was more important than ever before. The entire textile processing industry is facing enormous challenges worldwide, such as changing trade conditions or labor shortages. Many new technological solutions to these challenges were on show at Texprocess. There are great new developments, especially in the areas of digitalisation, automation and AI. Texprocess has thus focused on the future and highlighted many new opportunities", says Elgar Straub, managing director, VDMA Textile Care, Fabrics and Leather Technologies. "Against the backdrop of the current industry situation, our expectations were rather muted. The trade fair really exceeded them. The visitors were very well balanced in terms of internationality and fields of application. Europe was there entirely, but also the Middle East, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, the USA and Mexico. Our customers drive automation and process optimisation. We presented future-oriented solutions in this field - including our CNC sewing unit with rotating sewing kinematics, which won the Innovation Award, as well as an AI-based seam correction", says Michael Kilian, COO, Dürkopp Adler. In the areas of sewing technology and cutting solutions, Texprocess offered the world's most comprehensive range of suppliers presenting pioneering solutions for efficient and advanced manufacturing processes - also through AI: "This year, we presented our latest innovation, which integrates AI directly on the machine. Texprocess is exactly the right platform for this: a meeting point for technology, partnerships, customers from all over the world and indispensable for the global fashion industry. We made numerous new contacts, including from markets new to us such as South Africa and Australia," emphasises Marta Maiandi, CTO, Orox Group. The exhibitor Eurolaser was also delighted: "The trade fair went excellently for us. Visitors came from all over Europe, the USA, Mexico and further interesting markets and, of course, from very diverse application areas such as protective clothing, medicine and automotive. The format trade fair is back in full force. Our biggest innovation is our camera system, which sits directly on the bar. It scans the entire table in three seconds and optimises the cut and contours," says Laura Capone, chief sales officer, Eurolaser. The exhibitor Assyst provided insights into what a completely digital, sustainable and profitable future for the fashion industry looks like - with AI-driven solutions that support design in the creative process and visualise styles in real time: "Texprocess 2024 was extremely successful for us. Our visitors were enthusiastic about how uncomplicated digitalisation becomes for the apparel industry when AI, 3D simulation and 2D CAD are seamlessly integrated. With a highly interested international trade audience, the trade fair offers the ideal environment to present this type of product innovation," says Hans Peter Hiemer, managing director, Style3D | Assyst. Trade fair duo shines with research, knowledge transfer and high-quality content A powerful mix of topics drove the intensive exchange between research and industry and provided visitors with important impulses on the newest textile solutions, intelligent materials and the latest research results in the sectors. Numerous exhibitors, start-ups and renowned research institutes demonstrated at both trade fairs that AI, digitalisation and automation are significantly advancing the industry. Whether textile recycling, fault detection in production and processing, networked production steps or smart clothing that monitors the wearer's physical functions - the new opportunities offered by AI and digitalisation are multifaceted. These technologies are paving the way for the future of the industry. Latest materials and recycling technologies in times of legislative requirements In times of upcoming legislative requirements as part of the EU strategy for sustainable textiles, Techtextil and Texprocess focussed on recyclable solutions and the latest research results on resource efficiency and recyclability. This was also reflected in the increased number of exhibitors in the Econogy Finder: more than twice as many exhibitors were checked against the criteria of recognised labels and certificates as well as the Sustainable Development Goals and were included in the Finder. In addition, the Econogy Talks provided a platform for dialogue on resource-saving solutions, while the Econogy Tours led by an independent expert provided first-hand insights on sustainable products. The next edition of Techtextil and Texprocess will be held from 21 to 24 April 2026. Note: The content of this press release has not been edited by Fibre2Fashion staff.
