TIle work described in this report was presented at the Advanced Research Workshop, \"Environmental Aspects of Converting CW Facilities to Peaceful Purposes and Derivative Technologies in Modeling, Medicine and Monitoring.\" TIle ARW was jointly sponsored by NATO and the International Science and Technology Center (lSTC), Moscow. The workshop was held at the AC Laboratory, Spiez, Switzerland, in April, 1999. The editors and directors would like to thank the NATO Science Committee and the ISTC for their generous support and encouragement in making this event possible. We wish to give a special to Dr. Bernhard Brunner and his colleagues at the AC Laboratory, Spiez, for their more than generous support. This volume summarises the materials presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Sea-Dumped Chemical Munitions, held in Kaliningrad (Moscow Region), Russia, in January 1995. The conference was sponsored by the NATO Division of Scientific and Environmental Affairs in the framework of its outreach programme to develop co-operation between NATO member countries and the Cooperation Partner countries in the area of disarmament technologies. The problem of the ecological threat posed by chemical weapons (CW) dumped in the seas after the Second World War deserves considerable international attention: the amount of these weapons, many of them having been captured from the German Army, is assessed at more than three times as much as the total chemical arsenals reported by the United States and Russia. They were disposed of in the shallow depths of North European seas - areas of active fishing - in close proximity to densely populated coastlines, with no consideration of the long-term consequences. The highly toxic material have time and again showed up, for instance when retrieved occasionally in the fishing nets, attracting local media coverage only. Nevertheless, this issue has not yet been given adequate and comprehensive scientific analysis, the sea-disposed munitions are not covered by either the Chemical Weapons Convention or other arms control treaties. In fact, the problem has been neglected for a long time on the international level. Only recently were official data made available by the countries which admitted conducting dumping operations.

In preparing to construct my pocket, I've been researching past pockets. Here are some highlights... Fashion Museum, Bath Accession Number BATMC 2004-468 c.1720-1750 Victoria & Albert Museum Accession Number T.697B-1913 1700-1725 linen twill hand sewn with linen thread and embroidered with wool, wool tape and linen tape And a peek at the back of the pair featured above. (Thank you V&A for including this detail!) Victoria & Albert Museum Accession Number T.730B-1913 1700-1725 linen handsewn with linen thread, embroidered with wool and bound with linen tape. And another peek at the back! LACMA Accession Number M.67.8.90a-b Wool, cotton, silk, linen, 13 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. A little closer to home, there's this Colonial Williamsburg pocket. Accession Number 1958-180 1740-1760 cotton and linen embroidered with wool crewels, front lined with checked linen; backed and bound with linen. And even closer to home there's this Colonial Williamsburg pocket. Accession Number 1963-111740-1770 Origin: New England, cotton-linen tabby, linen warp, cotton weft; crewel wool embroidery, linen lining. Best part: it's bound with linen calico. (This pocket is featured in Costume Close-up.) Though they're slightly out of my era, there's this set that's dated 1801 from the MFA. Accession Number 45.657 Linen, wool, cotton, embroidered with the initials LB. Moving away from the floral motifs, I found this interesting MFA pocket. Accession Number 53.521 English, early 18th century, quilted on white linen ground with green silk thread backstitch vermiform design and embroidered with polychrome silks in chain stitch design of shepherdesses with two sheep, butterflies, pineapple plant and a variety of blossoms in background; pocket backed with fustian (stained with brown spots), front of pocket lined with linen, edges bound with green silk tape. And this might be my favorite! From the MFA, Accession Number 40.80 English, dated 1787. White cotton, backed with coarse linen, worked with crewels, in dark blue and several shades of pink, yellow and brown. Stitches: mostly chain stitch. Design: the balloon ascent of Vincent Lunardi with dog and cat from the Artillery Ground, London, September 15, 1784. Source of design, "Patern for Lady's Pocket. Published by Alexr Hegg at the Kings Arms, No.16 Paternoster Row Nov. 1 1786." The needlewoman's name Mary Hebbert and the date 1787 worked in fine black thread across the top of the pocket has almost entirely rotted away. All descriptions taken from museum websites.

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) will be realised on the former Sevilla Expo ´92 site in Isla de la Cartuja. Centred between the WTC building, Torre Sevilla, and the new Magallanes Park, the site offers the opportunity for a clear rectangular configuration representing the cultural heritage of the Expo ‘92 grid-shaped urban layout. At urban scale, the proposal is shaped to give continuity and reinforce the current pedestrian flows in Isla de la Cartuja, and integrate the future ones generated by the building. The urban design strategy relies on four principles: boundaries setback to create new public space, maximum occupancy and density of the plot, building orientation to accommodate the local natural conditions, and a strategy to maximise green areas while mitigating waste, landfills and excavations. Inspired by vernacular bioclimatic solutions, the proposal is organised around an atrium open to the garden below street level. A total of 12 research units with supporting functions (clusters) are located on two floors to maximize collaboration between users. The 11,500 square meters programme is organised on three levels. The public functions are located on the ground floor, while the clusters occupy the 1st and 2nd floors for privacy and security. By locating all the clusters on two floors, the distance between workplaces is reduced to encourage collaboration between users. The design proposes several simple, logical, and site-specific sustainable solutions informed by Seville's climate, access to daylight, shading, and the local prevailing winds. A robust and flexible floorplan allows for future adaptation and expansion. The roof is used as a power plant, the structure is built in timber, and the cantilevered balconies shade the facade.
