"Nappes d'Eau" murmuring cascades, 1758. The expansive gardens of Chateau d’Annevoie are perhaps the finest example of water gardens in Belgium, based on their unique mix of Italian, French and English inspiration, elegantly adapted to the Wallonian countryside. The oldest part of the castle date back to 1627, yet the majority of it was completed some hundred years later, fully integrated into the surrounding water gardens. This garden layout from 1758 is based on a mix of French formality and symmetry, Anglo-Saxon romantic vistas and prospects, and Italianate enclosed garden spaces featuring elaborate hydraulic tricks. A refined incorporation of the river Rouillon, over several levels of terraces and garden rooms, results in over fifty different water features ranging from a long narrow canal acting as a reservoir at the top of the gardens, over grottos, trellises, rills, cascades, jets and “bubblers”, to a sloping water parterre added in the 20th century. Remarkably, all but the latter are still today fed by the original 18th century hydraulic system, with a few of the fountains and cascades even having been working uninterruptedly for over 250 years.
