Each Monday we collaborate with our building's new and Dual Language staff members for a professional development session based on what they highlight as their needs and/or desires for learning! This week we focused on Daily 5 ideas as all of our staff are currently working hard to get their stations and guided reading up and running! The teachers who attending the session came up with a variety of wonderful ideas and activities that could potentially be used throughout the year in these work stations. I thought some of you may enjoy taking a gander at what they came up with as well! Just a little background... we utilized a strategy many of you may be familiar with called "Round Robin" to gather ideas during our meeting. The staff were given the anchor charts with only the titles and asked to add any activity ideas they were doing, would like to do, etc. based on the title on their paper. We gave each group 1 minute to brainstorm and write their ideas, and then they were asked to pass the poster to the next group. We continued to do this until all posters had made it to all groups. This is a great strategy that you could use with your students as well to assess their background knowledge and/or learning of concepts. You could even do it at the beginning of the year to see what activities they already know and enjoy doing during Daily 5 if they are familiar with it from the year past! This may give you some insight as to what they may want to do in your classroom as well! Alright now onto the posters...keep in mind these were quickly written by our staff and we discussed them a bit after as well, so not everything may make perfect sense! But feel free to ask questions in the comments if you have any and I would be happy to try my best to answer! After our meeting, I also took some time to type up all of their ideas onto one page for them to hold on to and refer to throughout the year. You are welcome to a copy if you'd like- just click on the image below :)! (Graphics: Scrappin Doodles, Priscilla Concepcion)
Take a look at how I set up my class and organize my stations for a successful start to Daily 5 in kindergarten.
Ever since I started Daily 5 in my classroom, it has run smoother, my kids are reading more, and I am able to teach more. I have begun to search for some organizational products for me and my students. I have been looking for something exactly like these cards. They are compact enough to be kept at their desks. It's going to be so much easier for students to keep track and for me. With just a glance I can see what they have done...and what they may need to be pushed to do. I have no idea who created these. I found them on Pinterest. There are also wonderful instructions on how to introduce each part of Daily 5. I am definitely using these next year! I apologize for not knowing who created these. If you know, would you let me know, so I can give credit. Here's another example of how to keep them really reading, thinking, and writing. This was created by The Fighting Texan. If you want the whole kit and caboodle, head on over here. Holy Cow! This has everything you need! AND IT'S FREE!!! The last thing I'm going to share today is a Daily 5 Rubric Who Knew??? I just love these ideas! I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Have a wonderful day!
Use this editable color-coded rotation schedule to meet all your Daily 5 needs.
This is an adorable Daily 5 "mini" set. Perfect for small wall spaces. I hope you find this resource useful! 9/23/13: As requested...updated with addition of "Work with Teacher" and "Work on Computer" :) Disclaimer: The Daily 5 and CAFÉ are trademark and copy written content of Educational Design, LLC dba The 2 Sisters. Keep your students engaged and reading during reading center time! In this post learn about 12 essential reading centers for lower elementary students.
According to our class Days In School Chart we are in 33 days! I finally feel like the mounds of work are dwindling and I am able to leave the classroom at a decent hour. Luckily there has been no surf, so I have devoted more time into my class. I know that sounds horrible, but if there are any sort of waves near me I leave school as quickly as possible to be in them!! I wanted to share with you how my Daily 5 rotations have been going this year. I started out slow by taking it step by step just like The Sisters advise. We started with Read To Self and really worked on that. The book bags have been a great help and I love that they don't break or fall apart when the kids drop them. We worked on choosing our Just Right Books and I displayed this cute poster in our reading center, along with our rotation chart for exchanging books. The kids love the book bags and it is amazing to me how quickly they progressed and are reading to themselves. They don't wander around the room, go get drinks or head to the bathroom. They sit there and read. Often they get so excited about what they are reading they want to share with a friend, which leads to our next area Buddy Reading. The Sisters call this Read To Someone, but that sounds a bit boring so I changed it. This class loves Buddy Reading. We worked on this as a whole group for awhile and they really have it down. To make it easier during our Daily 5 time I set up these buckets with lots of book pairs from the library. The buddies grab a bucket and find a quiet spot in the room to read. (I got those cute little Daily 5 labels from a link on Pinterest) Word Work is another favorite choice. I have given lots of options for this area and I ask that they work by themselves to make sure they are on task and doing the work. They can ask for help from a friend if they need it, but it is amazing how engaged they are, especially when they make their own choices! Work on Writing is one area that has taken some time. I started Writer's Workshop this year and it has been very successful, but it did take time to get the kids to make choices about what they wanted to write. When they have their own choice, they suddenly draw a blank. So I gave them some options during this time. They can finish something they have already started, they can write in one of our Message Books, or they can choose a Topics To Write About card. I saw this on Lori's blog Teaching With Love and Laughter and I just had to have it!! Click here to go to her great post on this!! My kids love choosing a card, taking it to their seat and writing about it. What I love is that they can physically take this little card (the size of a business card) to their seat and look at it to keep them on task. So simple, yet very effective!! The most popular area is Listen To Reading. This fills up quickly because the kids get to go on the computers. Right now they are going to either Starfall or Silly Books. I haven't really focused on setting up more sites for them to go to. Our school also uses Kid Biz which focuses on non-fiction articles which they listen to and answer questions about. This is very difficult for many of my students right now, because they need lots of practice with non-fiction. It is perfect though for those new CCSS. But the problem is this is my noisiest center!! They are all over there talking and laughing and it disrupts the rest of the class. Well I am excited to tell you that my Donor's Choose project for individual CD players just got funded!! Hurray! Now I can have students choose a player and go sit somewhere on their own to listen to stories. My biggest problem with my Daily 5 has been giving the students their choice of where to go. I love this clip chart. I made it simple to see the pictures and they clip right on it to have a spot. Well this took FOREVER for them to get. They all clipped on Listen To Reading even though there was no spot. They stood there staring at it for 10 minutes before making a choice. I almost decided to just make a chart as to who would go where! I just couldn't take the fact that so many were just standing around for almost the whole time. Well after lots and lots of practice they have learned to make a choice and get started. I just pop on my teacher hat (a big straw beach hat) and get started with my group. The kids know that when my hat is on, they cannot disturb me! The kids who were standing around discovered that they had wasted their time and didn't get to do an activity. They were bummed, but the next time they chose a lot faster. We also had to really work on how to fill out their chart to know where they were supposed to go. Many of them had no concept of what to do with this. So we had to go step by step and write our name, the date and talk about it over and over again. I had to physically show many of them exactly how to fill it out. Once they finish all 5 areas then they can go where they would like to. Some are still confused with it, but it's coming along. All in all I am happy with the way my literacy block is going. I think all the students are highly engaged and really like all of the activities. I had an EA walk in one morning and I didn't even see her come in. She dropped of some papers onto my desk and told me about it later. She said she looked over and I had my big beach hat on and was working with my group, while all the of the other kids were hard at work. She said "Wow, I would love to be in your class, it looks so fun!!" That made my day:)) Now if I could just get my math time to be as engaging!!

I started Daily 5 in 2011 and I feel like I am now comfortable enough to blog about it and how I started out. When I first started Daily 5 I was completely lost, I had no idea where to start or what to do. But then I discovered Pinterest, Oh My Word! I was in Education Heaven! I found the Daily 5 for Dummies compiled by Jayne Haenel. Click the picture to grab your copy. It has instructions for the first 20 days of the daily 5 with CAFE instructions also. It's an awesome resource and it has truly helped me kick start Daily 5 in my classroom. ***UPDATE: I found a website where you can download it for free, just click here or click on the picture. Daily 5 asks to incorporate 5 individual anchor charts on how the stations are supposed to look like. You fill out the anchor charts with your students. Once all the anchor charts are filled out it is suggested to keep these anchor charts up throughout the year so students can refer back to them and remember the "rules." My classroom is in a portable and I have limited space, so having all 5 anchor charts up was taking up so much valuable space. I still plan to fill out my anchor charts in the beginning of the school year because it helps introduce Daily 5 to the students. I love how Mrs. Lemons has her anchor charts ready to be used for this school year. I plan on making mine look just like this. Thanks Mrs. Lemons!!! After having the anchor charts up for about 3 weeks or so I will exchange all 5 posters for ONE anchor chart. This anchor chart will stay up through out the year saving me wall space. Once my students have mastered the rules of daily 5 they are ready to start their stations. I group my students according to their reading levels. My students to do not get to choose which station they would like to work on. I have a system that I use that tells them which station they are to work on. I put Velcro behind the labels and names so I can switch them around when necessary. You can download the station labels for free here. I strongly suggest you start off by reading the Daily 5 book by "The Sisters" during the summer just to get your feet wet and get a better understanding of what Daily 5 is all about.
Literacy Rotations for guided reading can be challenging to set up. These are my favourite tips for daily 5 rotations that run smoothly.

Hello Everyone! It is not a secret that I love the Two Sisters Daily Five set up for my literacy block. It is my goal this summer to share some of my organizational strategies that I have found to be successful with my firsties. One of my favs is our Daily Five Song. I use this to get kids going on their dailies. By the time we're finished singing the song, each kiddo should be settled in and ready to begin their first Daily, or transitioning to the next choice. After learning the words and adding the poem to our poetry folders, transitions are a breeze! As we get into the routine of things, sometimes we even just hum the tune (The Ants Go Marching). It works! Stay tuned for more! Get your printable here! :) Let's get reading! Joyfully! Nancy
Here are my 10 must have read alouds for introducing Daily 5 in the primary grades. These books are sure to start your year off in the right direction!

At my school, we watch a live broadcast for the morning announcements. My favorite part is what we call the "Friday Song". The whole school joins in singing and waving their hands to celebrate the end of a great week! You may want to adopt this in your classroom. There is no particular tune so you can make up your own. This is how it goes: Its...Friday, it's Friday, it's Friday, Friday, Friday! It's Friday, it's Friday! It's Friday all day long! Woo! It's...Friday, it's Friday, it's Friday, Friday, Friday! It's Friday, it's Friday! The week is almost done! Woo! I have no idea who made this up, but it's just our silly way to get pumped up for the weekend! Freebie Fridays at TBA is really something to celebrate! I have found so many fantastic downloads by searching through previous Friday posts. Someday, when you have a little free time, you might want to do the same. There are seriously hundreds or even thousands of freebies to browse! It's a great way to find new blogs you may want to follow too! I'm linking up again to share some Daily 5 poster sets. I have gotten many requests to make a set that matches the black and bright CAFE poster set. Both are freebies at my TPT store and Teachers Notebook shop. This one has been downloaded over 4000 times! It's CRAZY to imagine that many classrooms may have this on their bulletin board! :) If you're implementing Daily 5 in your room and love bright colors, this is the poster set for you! :) Enjoy it friends! I love receiving feedback on freebies! It just makes you feel good to know that you have helped someone out and that they appreciate it. Here is what one sweet teacher (Kelly) said: I LOVE this poster set. I was looking for a CAFE set that is thorough, kid friendly, and bright and cheery, and you completely nailed it! Thanks for making it a freebie!! Remember to get your posts ready for the linky on Wednesday! I would LOVE to have you join me for What Worked? What Didn't? You can save this image for your post! :) My post will be related to managing Daily 5 rotations! See what other great freebie finds are out there! Click on the picture to visit TBA! Have a super weekend! Woo!

Ok, so we are ready to get into the thick of things with Chapter 3 and 4 this week. I hope everyone has their book by now and is ready. But if not, the beauty of Daily 5 2ndEdition is that it is a VERY easy read and you can catch up quickly even if…
We're sharing how we set up for Daily 5 rotations! Come check out our pictures and grab FREE resources! Expectations Posters Here's our take on the Daily 5 expectation posters! We keep these posters hanging in the room all year. In the beginning of the year, we continually refer to the posters as kiddos learn the rules and expectations of the Daily 5 routines. After Winter Break, we like to refer back to the posters. After a busy holiday season and a bit of time out of school, the review is really helpful! Just as outlined in the Daily 5 book (affiliate link), by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, we set up the expectations of each Daily 5 routine with our kiddos. Below is each poster. At the bottom of this blog post, you can grab a FREE file with the black icons to make your own posters! **Quick note** We don't make an expectation chart for Work on Writing until after we have completed our 25 day Writer's Workshop Introduction. For our favorite lessons to intro Writer's Workshop, see this blog post! Student Check Sheet After we're in full swing with our Daily 5 routines, we have kiddos use this check list to record their daily choices. Additionally, if you have kiddos who need more direction with their Daily 5 center choices, this rotation chart can be helpful! We've had groups of kiddos who select their own Daily 5 choices just fine! Other groups will end up doing the same rotations over and over through the week. These rotation charts have been very helpful for managing those kiddos and getting them to participate in the Daily 5 choices evenly. Click here to grab all of these resources for your classroom! Book Leveling And here's a little tip to get your kiddos ready for selecting books for their book boxes. We've found that used colored dots to label our books, then giving the kiddos colored dots on their books boxes really helps facilitate the book selection process! It also helps to keep kiddos selecting and reading 'good fit' books! Below is a pic of the supplies we use to set this up in our classroom. You can grab a free download of the leveled book chart and large color dots to put on book bins in your classroom. For the colored dot stickers, we buy plain white dot stickers and color them with markers! This gives you a way to create a much better variety of colors! Click HERE to grab the file for book leveling!

Take a look at how I set up my class and organize my stations for a successful start to Daily 5 in kindergarten.
Well first off my little bloggy venture with Ffion from The First Grade Jungle is up! Please go check it out and enter in our giveaway! We are super excited about it! Second, since I have been absent for sometime now I figured I would catch you up and unload everything I have been storing on my camera. This means picture overload! Sorry. Generating Questions before reading (inspired by The Inspired Apple) Character Glove thanks to inspiration from Debbie Diller. I use this during small group as well. New workstation I added this year: Overhead. So far my students can write their words, make their words with magnets or letter tiles. I will be added sentence strips I made which I will print on transparencies and students can fill in the blanks. (Hopefully I will add this to TpT soon!) I just purchased the clear tiles and then wrote letters onto the tiles. Very simple and the kids LOVE this work station. Writing/ Handwriting Workstation. This will be transitioning into only writing next week. Another new workstation I added was the Non-Fiction Reading Station. I really wanted to promote my students to read to find out new information about a topic. I added a variety of books on various levels. I discussed with the students that they would still need to use the "good fit book" strategy to find books to read during this time. This year my kids REALLY love the Poetry Work Station. They get upset if they do not have time to finish and illustrate their poem. Love it. ABC/ Word Study Workstation Library Work Station Anchor Charts: Behavior Chart And a little reminder… Happy Monday :)
With Common Core technology standards and with so many of our assessments moving to an on-line format, it is essential that students are able to navigate
Happy Summer Break, friends! I hope this post finds you well, breathing deeply, and enjoying some time to refresh and relax.
