These collectives offer a voluntary democratic community where people live and work together on a non-competitive basis. Today some 270 kibbutzim, varying in size from 80 to over 2,000 people, are scattered throughout Israel. Living in a communal environment like this offers countless lessons in cooperation and teamwork.

Taken last weekend in very mild weather, looking east along Hadrian's wall to the Roman fort at Housesteads. I'm really pleased with the transparency (but not this quick and dirty scan). I tried using "compound scheimpflug" (sounds very technical) for the first time and it actually worked! The small pebbles in the foreground right through to the trees in the distant copse appear sharp, as does the wall top to bottom on the left hand side. When I initially applied tilt without the swing, the top of the wall appeared to be a touch out of focus on the ground glass (maybe stopping down to f32 1/2 would have sorted this out anyway?). I'm also pleased with the exposure (on the transparency). Unfortunately this scan is quite rubbish, so I will have to attend to that later. I'm also very excited about this shot because it is from the first batch of E-6 film I have processed myself. I used a Jobo tank and reel and the Kodak full 6 step kit. Technical details: Front tilt, front swing, 0.3 graduated filter (hard) covering mist in the valley, staggered with a 0.6 over the sky. On the transparency the 'blown' area of sky still has some tonality. F32 1/2, 8 seconds. If you have time please have a look at the larger version. Oh yes, and one of my favourite aspects of the image is the cow grazing in the small mile castle (centre). She very politely held still (ish) for the full 8 seconds.
