Who should be baptized? Should a person who has not been baptized be allowed to become a member of a church? What happens when a person is baptized? There are a number of important questions about baptism that call for biblical and theological reflection on a more fundamental question--what is baptism? Perhaps no one in the twentieth century addressed that question more thoroughly than British New Testament scholar George Beasley-Murray. While touching on a range of issues related to baptism, this book explores the influence that Beasley-Murray's work has had on the debate about the meaning of baptism, and shows why his work was referred to as \"\"a bombshell in the baptistery.\"\" \"\"George Beasley-Murray was a New Testament scholar who served as principal of Spurgeon's College, London, from 1958 to 1973. His 'Baptism in the New Testament' (1963), the 'bombshell' of the title of this book, argued for a much higher view of baptism than had been customary among Baptists. Justin Nalls shows the central place of Beasley-Murray in debate among Baptists about the meaning of baptism during the twentieth century.\"\" --David Bebbington, Professor of History, University of Stirling \"\"Baptism lies at the heart of Christian faith. It also lies at the heart of some of its fiercest controversies. In his careful treatment of the baptism theology of George Beasley-Murray, Justin Nalls spans both sides of the Atlantic and takes his readers into the stormy yet exciting waters of complex debates, heated exchanges, and fruitful dialogues. He succeeds in highlighting the significant labors of one of the twentieth century's finest exegetes.\"\" --Andrew J. Byers, Director of the Free Church Track and Lecturer in New Testament, Cranmer Hall, St John's College, Durham University \"\"The Baptist World Alliance's annual gathering in July 2017 demonstrated the global interest Baptists have in exploring and recovering a biblical baptismal sacramentalism. But this is not without opponents. Nalls' research is a welcome contribution to this debate with his examination of the influence George Beasley-Murray has had on Southern and British Baptists, and in a way that will hopefully encourage others to explore the place of baptism in the Christian life and Baptist community.\"\" --Anthony R. Cross, Adjunct Supervisor at The International Baptist Theological Study Centre Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Justin Nalls is the Teaching Pastor at Ingleside Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia. He earned his PhD from University of Wales (Spurgeon's College).

Veldig stolt mamma her :) klem

The Church’s temples may have closed worldwide, but blessings are still available to Latter-day Saints everywhere, says Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
Highlights These important and incisive essays, spanning more than two decades of research and engagement, probe facets and episodes of infant baptism's fortunes over twenty centuries. Author(s): David F Wright 456 Pages Religion + Beliefs, Christian Rituals & Practice Series Name: Studies in Christian History and Thought Description Book Synopsis These important and incisive essays, spanning more than two decades of research and engagement, probe facets and episodes of infant baptism's fortunes over twenty centuries. The story of pedobaptism is traced from its shadowy beginnings as a variant of faith-baptism, through inflated Reformation defenses as infant-baptism monopolized baptismal thought and practice, to biblical and ecumenical reevaluations and hopeful contemporary rapprochements across divisive waters. Review Quotes ""Professor David Wright has done a tremendous service to both the academy and the Church with this truly impressive volume of essays probing the history and theology of infant baptism from the New Testament to the present day. In its erudition, independence of judgment, and challenging relevance for today, this is an indispensable resource."" --Timothy Bradshaw, Senior Tutor, Regent's Park College; member of the Oxford Faculty of Theology ""In these essays, Professor Wright brings his prodigious knowledge of Church history and historical theology to bear on a vital theme for the Christian faith. He traces, with clarity and insight, both the Church's understanding of baptism through the centuries and the continuing debates."" --Stewart J. Brown, Professor of Ecclesiastical History, University of Edinburgh ""This well-developed volume of essays contains the fruit of David Wright's many labors on this topic and will become a standard resource for scholarly work on the history and meaning of infant baptism in the future."" --Timothy George, Dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University, executive editor of 'Christianity Today' ""This is an outstanding and eminently coherent collection of studies on aspects of baptismal theologies and practices spanning the Christian era. They help restore the topic to a high place on the theological agenda--all with a characteristic spirit of catholicity, evangelical concern, scholarly expertise, and literary finesse."" --Ian Hazlett, Professor of Ecclesiastical History, University of Glasgow ""There is much learned historical scholarship here illuminating the history of the practice of baptism in general and infant baptism in particular. There is also much wise reflection on the pastoral implications of the practice for the church then and now. No one with a serious interest in the doctrine of baptism can afford to neglect this volume."" --Anthony N. S. Lane, Director of Research and Professor of Historical Theology, London School of Theology ""Wright's penetrating historical vision is combined with persuasive arguments for the unduly neglected but critical importance of baptism for the whole church. The result is a book that challenges both the received traditions and current practices, but in the most edifying way imaginable."" --Mark A. Noll, McAnaney Professor of History, University of Notre Dame ""An invaluable resource for the history and understanding of infant baptism in the Church from the New Testament to the present day."" --David M. Thompson, Fellow and President of Fitzwilliam College; reader in Modern Church History, University of Cambridge ""Wright's expertise in patristic, reformation, and ecumenical theology comes to full fruition here, yielding an invaluable resource for reflection among historians, theologians, exegetes, and church leaders. David Wright has bequeathed a sterling example of how historical theology can and must inform systematics and practical theology today."" --John L. Thompson, Professor of Historical Theology; Gaylen and Susan Byker Professor of Reformed Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
