Heather Whitestone, born in 1973 in Alabama, is a deaf dancer and beauty queen who became the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss America in 1995. She lost most of her hearing at the age of 18 months due to a high fever, but this did not stop her from pursuing her dreams.
The Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) was established in 1856 to provide education to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. TSD has a rich history of adapting to changing needs and challenges, including the adoption of new technologies and expansion of services. Today, TSD provides a comprehensive education to students and families, and continues to be a vital resource for the deaf and hard of hearing community in Texas and beyond.
Day 8: Gallaudet University was founded on April 8th, 1864 when Congress and President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill into law to allow this institution to confer college degrees. Gallaudet has been pivotal in the lives of deaf people all around America as it is the only university specifically dedicated to deaf education. He developed unconventional teaching methods, including hand signals for the alphabet, which allowed his students to read, write, and even speak.
