I and the children LOVE these AMAZING trash liner jellyfish. So simple, and yet such an amazing addition to our OCEAN/SEA theme. I have added a Youtube tutorial at the bottom. To make these I used two 10 gallon commercial trashcan liners, the ones for small office trash cans, at a cost of about 5 cents and about 10 minutes of time each. #1 The first liner is opened up, four "corners" [just grab the edge about every 1/4 around] brought together and stapled, then stuffed down into the center of the bag to create a bowl shape. #2 For the second liner, cut off the sealed edge. It is accordion folded in fourths. Unfold completely and fold over once to create a square, giving you four layers of plastic. Cut off the edges and cut into spiral. I did about a 1 - 1 1/4 inch thickness. The wider the strip the shorter the "tentacles." I didn't try to be that accurate or to make a perfect circle. I knew once they were opened out that it wouldn't matter. You end up with a pretty long strip. I folded it in half and cut it to create two strips of equal length. Since it's actually doubled over double layers, this gives you 8 tentacles total. Spread them all apart. \ If you try to attach them without separating them first, they will cling to one another and not fall properly to create the tentacle effect. Once separated, join them all together, placing them randomly together in a circle and stapling together. Since you have two sets of four of the same cut, this is important that they not sit perfectly together or it won't look right. Stick the tentacle staple up against the inside of the bowl shaped bag and push up with your hand. Collect all layers on the top, along with a string to hang if wanted, and staple. You can't see the staple on the ones I have up. The plastic folds over and hides it. The layers are: TENTACLES TOP OF BAG gathered together and folded over [pic below] BOTTOM CENTER OF BAG STRING FOR HANGING All are stapled through at once. I can now make them with just one stable through the whole thing, but it is easier to staple the tentacles first, then the top of the bag, then the combined pieces. These are WONDERFUL!! I'm so glad I came across the idea. I think my process is MUCH easier than the original instructions, which used clear rubber bands. This is an original idea of Casa Haus English that her daughter created for a school assignment. She placed her jellyfish creation on a stick and used it as a movable puppet. Our jellyfish did the same, which is really cool, but with 2 and 3-year-olds, playing with plastic bags just doesn't work. So, ours are hung from the ceiling. TUTORIAL I have received several emails about the bringing the "corners" together step, so have created the following tutorial. A couple of things to note is that for this one I used smaller liners than the ones in this post, and I folded the first liner in quarters rather than opening it out and folding it in half, so the tentacles came out shorter. Only the last staple is necessary. If you are making a lot of these, you'll probably get to the point where you can just hold it all together and only use the one staple. I was inspired to create this giant clam sea shell for my living room. These amazing Tridacna Gigas Giant Clam Shells can reach up to 4 feet across. The clam shell that I made measures about 28"X 15 1/2"; I was trying to make it the same size as a real, average sized clam shell. I am really happy with the result. First I drew and cut this shape like you see in the photo out of cardboard for the sections of the clam shell. You could cut about five or six sections depending on how big you want your clam shell. Then I cut small sections along the edge, and bent the cardboard to give it a curved shape. This way it is easy to handle. I glued together the cuts along the edges with hot glue. This is the form I obtained. Then I glued them together. Then I covered all the sections with paper and white glue diluted with water. To give it a more ruffled edge to the shell I cut this shape from cardboard, and glued it on the joint sections of the shell. Then I covered it with more paper and glue solution. Here you can see the shell all covered. After the clam shell was completely dry, I covered it with All-Purpose Joint Compound using a sponge, and I let it dry. To give texture to the shell I first worked the exterior of the shell, applying a generous amount of compound, then spread it with a wide comb, and let it dry. Then I applied joint compound to the interior of the shell as well. To give a more smooth surface inside the shell, after applying the joint compound with the sponge, try to make long, smooth strokes with the sponge. Let dry. Instead of sanding it, I used a wet sponge to smooth the surface. If you are thinking of using the shell to place plants inside, you could apply several coats of a clear synthetic resin or clear finish for boats. This is how I applied a good amount of joint compound and spread it with the comb. Spread the joint compound in a horizontal motion with the comb. After it was completely dry, I painted it with a primer+paint acrylic paint. To give it a more realistic look, you could glue tiny shells or dried barnacles between the sections of the faux shell. I really like my faux clam shell; I Love to decorate with sea shells. ~ Have a wonderful day and blessings always~
Een inspirerende dosis verwondering over kunst, natuur, stijl, reizen, creativiteit en de kleine dingen van het leven.
The Spring and Summer Pottery Barn catalogs had beautiful faux coral for sale in them. Even though PB's coral was not as expensive as real coral, it is still more than I can afford. In doing a little research on what coral actually looked like, I realized that it has many forms and some of them look like things already made for me in the floral section of Hobby Lobby. I was hoping that with a coating of a neutral color of paint that the multi-colored floral items could start to look like coral. My hopes that a quick spritz of white spray paint would cover the colors on the florals were dashed as the color kept on bleeding through. This purple stuff was the worst at just sucking up paint and still being purple. The most interesting side of the dried mushrooms just would NOT take paint. I finally gave up on this side of the mushroom and used the other side which did take paint wonderfully. These plastic green spike-y things not only resisted regular spray paint but also specialty plastic paint (which was left over from another project). Finally, after a spray coat of this and a brushed on coat of that, most of the elements got to looking close to the color I wanted. Real corals come in a wide variety of colors, but for this project, I just wanted kinda neutral colors. To add some texture and interest, I splurged on a couple of cans of texture paint to give a final spritz if needed. ( I had discovered this worked well when I was trying to give a sand look to my Faux Sandcastles earlier this summer.) Also, if needed, some pieces got painted with glue then sprinkled with a coat of real sand or crushed sea shells (from WalMart). For the brain coral and bases for the other corals, I used "Great Stuff" foam in a can ($3 per can at paint department at Walmart). I didn't realize this photo was so foggy. The camera came out of the air-conditioned house into the heat and humidity that is an Alabama summer and the lens clouded up. Follow the directions on the can to "wear gloves" when you are using this foam. If it gets on your skin, you will be wearing the foam for a few days. It also sticks to whatever it touches until it is dry so I squirted it out on wax paper that I could just peel off later. Keep kids and animals away from it until it dries completely. The foam goes a long way. It puffs up a lot. It is pretty hard to make very specific shapes with it. I tried making some starfish with the foam but I had to label them "whimsical" due to the crazy shapes that they turned out to be. So after the painting, it was time to pair the florals with the foam bases. The florals were attached to the foam globs with hot glue. If necessary, they got another coat of paint. For instance, the items below turned into... ...Spiny Coral. Here are some more combos... This is the side of the dried mushrooms that DID take paint. Mushroom Coral **************************** Persimmons before paint... ...after paint... become Cavernous Star Coral. A little of their original color is showing through but it makes it have just a slightly different color than the other items in the coral display which I like. ************************ I don't know what this purple paint sucking item's official name is but it became... Sea Whip Coral ************************ I think this is maybe thistle but it became... Polyp Coral ******************* Twigs and foam and paint became... Branch Coral ************** Bamboo covered with tiny broken shells became... ...Pipe Organ Coral. ************** Baby acorns glued onto foam holding up a painted plastic fern becomes... ...barnacles on the base of Gorgonian Coral. ****************** A blob of spray foam painted and dusted with sand becomes... ...Brain Coral. ***************** Tiny foam balls on a foam base becomes... ...Tentacle Coral. This ended up being so heavy, I had to put it on a different base to keep it from tipping over. ************** Here is a picture of all the coral together in a display. You can see more close-ups at this post. This little arrangement of all the types of coral was made to fit under my new glass cloche. You can see more pictures of the coral in the cloche in this post.
