Maximalism is a design style that uses an abundance of wonderful items all on display at the same time. Bordering on cluttered, maximalism is all about surrounding yourself with the stuff you love. Here are a few tips & tricks for how to decorate in a maximalist style without your home looking too messy. Embrace Bold ColorsOne of the most popular elements of maximalism is the use of bold and vibrant colors. Use colors that make you happy and wake you up in the morning instead of colors that are "safe" and boring that everyone else uses in their homes. Don't be afraid to mix and match colors that are not often paired together. Uniqueness is appreciated in a maximalist style. If you're not sure where to start, pick one large item with many colors (such as a large rug or piece of art) and decorate your room using the colors in that item. Select at least 3 colors and repeat those colors in at least 3 places in your room. For an added designer touch, also add in colors that are lighter or darker versions of your 3 colors for added depth of color. For example, one of your colors might be turquoise. You can decorate your room with turquoise lamps, some art with the color turquoise, and some turquoise candle holders. In addition to turquoise, you can add accessories in the color aqua (which is a lighter version of turquoise) and other accessories in a dark turquoise color. Do not have an equal amount of each color visible in your room else your room might look overly styled and not natural. For best results, select a certain color to be 60% of the color in your room, another color to be 30% of the color, and the 3rd color to be only 10% of the color in your room. Mix and Match PatternsMaximalism is all about mixing and matching different patterns to create a one-of-a-kind look. Avoid mixing and matching patterns from the same store - select items from different stores so you don't end up with the same style as your neighbors. Don't be afraid to decorate using stripes with polka dots, florals with animal prints, and/or geometric shapes with abstract designs. When it comes to mixing patterns, there are a few key tips to keep in mind.... First, try to choose patterns that are a similar color which will help to tie the different patterns together and create a cohesive look. Second, mix patterns of different scales, such as a large-scale floral with a small-scale geometric print so the patterns don't try to compete with each other. Use Texture to Add DepthMaximalism is not just about using a wide range of items with different color and pattern, it is also about using a mixture of textures. Rooms without much texture tend to feel sterile and boring, so feel free to add as much texture as you want. Some popular textural fabric include velvet, leather, wool, and fur. You can also use textured wallpapers, rugs, and/or pillows to add warmth to your room. Also consider addig some rough textures to contrast with your soft textures, such as wicker, exposed brick, and vintage hard back books with fabric or leather binding. Mix and Match Furniture StylesMaximalism and eclectic furniture go hand in hand. Don't be afraid to mix and match different styles of furniture to create a space that's unique and full of your own personality & style. Consider pairing a vintage sofa with a modern coffee table or mixing mid-century modern chairs with a rustic dining table for a one-of-a-kind unique aesthetic. When mixing furniture styles, make sure to consider scale and proportion since your items should feel like you picked them exclusively for your home, not just thrown together hand-me-downs. Using an eclectic mix of furniture is a great way to ensure that your home does not look like your neighbor's and it is uniquely yours. Don't Forget the ArtUse unique, collected, and/or bold pieces of art to add personality to your maximalist space and repeat your color scheme. Consider using oversized pieces of art to make a bold statement. You can also use a gallery wall, which is a collection of different pieces of smaller art that is hung together to create the feeling of one larger piece of art. Also consider using sculptures in your room, which are especially dramatic with an uplight. You can use basically any art piece that you love, but make sure that you love it and didn't just buy some generic piece of art to fill the space. Don't be afraid to mix and match different styles of art, as long as they create a cohesive look and feel. When hanging your art, make sure to consider the height at which you hang your art. In general, the center of your art should be hung around eye level, which is typically around 60 inches from the floor. Add Layers with AccessoriesThe use of many accessories is vital in maximalist design. Select accessories that repeat your room's color scheme and style to create cohesion. Feel free to paint items that you already own but whose color doesn't quite suit your needs. Metallic spray paint is a favorite for bringing new life to old accessories. Use accessories in a variety of textures and materials to create visual interest and depth. This can include different materials like wood, stone, metal, paper, and woven items. Include unique vintage and antique items of interest that not only look good but are a good conversation starter. Collect your home accessories over time, not just in one shopping trip to one store, to ensure that you find unique items that you love and not mass produced items that simply fill the space. Use Unique LightingMaximalist spaces require maximalist lighting. One light fixture in the center of your ceiling is not good enough! You need to have multiple light sources for aesthetics and to be able to light your room according to the occasion. Consider upgrading your ceiling light to something more decorative or ignore it and only use it when you need maximum light while cleaning that room. Add unique light fixtures (such as chandeliers, wall sconces, and pendant lights) to add personality to your home. Beautiful colorful lamps or lamps that have a sculptural shape are a great unique addition to a maximalist space. For the best lighting in your home, consider adding each of the following....... Ambient lighting is the general lighting in the room, but it can also be decorative if you add a chandelier or pendant light as the main source of light. Task lighting is lighting directed towards an area where a certain task will be performed, such as a piano light for reading sheet music or a desk lamp. Accent lighting is lighting that accentuates an item of interest, such as an art light shining on a piece of art, an uplight in the pot of a tree, or light inside a china cabinet highlighting the gorgeous china.

A dining room should be impressive, but it also needs to be very functional. Whether you use your dining room for all of your everyday meals or it is just used for special occasions, there are many factors that you need to consider when decorating. Here are some interior design tips & tricks for how to decorate a dining room to make it both a beautiful and functional space. Determine Your StyleThe first step in decorating a dining room is to determine your style. Do you want a traditional look, a modern look, a contemporary look, or something in between? Don't ignore the adjacent room styles since the style of your home should be somewhat cohesive. If you're not sure what your style is, try gathering many images together of what you like. Pinterest is a good website to help with this task. After you have gathered 50-100 images, remove the ones that are not your favorite and you should be left with just a few that show your favorite style. Continue this process to refine your style even more. Don't forget to involve other decision makers in the house in this process. It's important to decide on your style before you start shopping for furniture and decor items. Choose Your Color PaletteOnce you've determined the style of your dining room, you should choose your color palette. Make sure to keep in mind the colors in your adjacent rooms to ensure that your dining room colors are in a similar style. They do not have to be the same colors, but they do need to feel like they are complementary. You might want to use bold colors for a dramatic look (especially if your dining room is only used on special occasions) or you might prefer more neutral tones for a more relaxed feel. One way to easily create a color palette for your room is to select a large item, such as a rug or large piece of art, that has many colors in it. You can use 3 or more of those colors to create your color palette. For a more interesting color palette, you can also use a lighter and/or darker version of each of your colors in your color palette. This will also make shopping for other home decor easier since you will have a wider range of colors to choose from. The best way to create a cohesive look in your dining room is to use your colors in multiple places throughout your room. For example, the green in your art can be repeated as green in your curtains, green in your dining chairs, and green in some candlesticks. You Need a Focal PointAll rooms need a at least one focal point, and that includes your dining room. Your dining room focal point could be a large piece of artwork, a unique light fixture, or a statement piece of furniture. You might even choose to add a fireplace. The most common focal point in dining rooms is a grand chandelier. Another common focal point is an elaborate dining table or china hutch. If your dining room is missing a focal point, the easiest way to add one is to simply add a dining table centerpiece. Consider Your LightingLighting is an essential part of any dining room, however most people only have a basic and boring small chandelier in the center of the room. Don't be afraid to go bold with lighting! Your chandelier should not be the one that was installed by your builder and is the same as every other house on your street. Be unique and add some personality with a new chandelier! You can go with something every elaborate if you have a traditional home or something more sculptural and artistic if you have a more modern home. Also consider having more than one chandelier, especially if you have a rectangular table. Don't forget a dimmer for your chandelier so you can set the perfect mood. The best designed rooms do not have just one source of light. If you have art in your dining room, consider having an art light to showcase the art. If you have a china hutch, you can add lights to showcase your china. You can also add wall sconce to add light to the perimeter of your dining room. Candles on your dining table also contribute to your mood lighting. Choose the Right FurnitureYou should give a lot of thought and consideration to your dining room furniture, else you might create a space that nobody wants to use. The dining table should be large enough to accommodate your family and guests. When choosing your dining chairs, make sure they're comfortable and complement your overall design aesthetic. If you have a small dining room, measure the dimensions of your room to see if a round table will fit the room better than a rectangular one. You might also need to eliminate your china hutch or sideboard to maximize the dining table if your room is too small to seat the amount of people that you want. Also consider whether your dining table comes with a leaf that can increase the size of your table when needed. Most leafs are 12-18 inches wide and the same width as your table. Some dining tables come with more than one. Make sure you have a place to store your leafs when not in use (maybe under your bed?). Don't Forget About StorageDon't forget about where you are going to store all of your stuff in your dining room. You'll need a place to store your dishes, silverware, glassware, table linens, and other dining room items. Traditionally, people use a sideboard, china cabinet, or buffet that matches their dining table to store their stuff. Also consider using a non-traditional piece of furniture for storage in your dining room, such as an armoire. You can even create a built-in storage piece custom made to your exact specifications. This storage piece can also serve as a place to put food served buffet style. If you have a butler's pantry, you might select a smaller storage piece, or no storage piece, since you can store most of your tableware in there. Consider the FlooringWhen selecting flooring for your dining room, make sure to consider your lifestyle and your guests. If you have young kids or tend to be a bit messy (or your guests tend to be a bit messy), then a lighter colored carpet in your dining room is not a good option since it will be a constant cleaning nightmare. If you have tile in adjacent areas to your dining room, you can continue the tile through the dining room for a cohesive look. Hardwood floors are a popular choice for dining rooms because they're durable and easy to clean, however you will need to clean up any spills immediately to avoid damage.. Consider adding an area rug to your dining room for added color, texture, and softness. Don't Forget the WallsYou can paint your dining room walls a solid color or you can do something a little bit more unexpected. A more unique option is to add paneling to your dining room walls for added drama and interest. Wallpaper is another popular option for dining rooms. Many dining rooms have paneling on the lower part of the wall and wallpaper on the top. If you want to add something really special to your dining room, consider hiring someone to paint a mural personalized to your family. Don't forget about the ceiling - it does not have to be plain white. Ceilings can be painted a fun color and/or have molding added. Add Decorative AccentsDecorative accents are the "cherry on top" that will make your dining room extra special. Large decorative accents include items such as wall art, a rug, and/or curtains. Smaller decorative accents include candlesticks, a table runner/tablecloth, and your dining table centerpiece. These items can add texture, color, and personality to your dining room so it is not so boring and bland. Consider which decorative accents will be seen when your dining table is not in use, but also consider which decorative accents you will use when having a dinner party. Add GreenerySince dining rooms can often feel a bit sterile, adding greenery is a good option to add life to the space. Not only do plants add color and texture, but they also help purify the air. You can add plants to the corners of your room or have one large plant in the center of your dining table. When choosing your plants, make sure they're appropriate for the lighting conditions in your dining room so they will look their best. Live plants always look better than fake ones, as long as they are healthy. If you can't keep a real plant looking good, then you can buy a faux plant, but make sure it is of the highest quality (not from a cheap accessory store or big box store) and it is cleaned regularly. Instead of a plant, you might opt for fresh flowers in a vase in the center of your dining table. You can keep fresh flower in your dining room daily or just when you are expecting dinner guests. Personalize the SpaceDon't forget to personalize your dining room so it is special and unique to you. Your dining room should include items that showcase your own personality and style, not be a one-for-one copy of the style of your favorite home decor store. You can add family photos, one-of-a-kind art (that you bought or made yourself), and items from your childhood or travels. You can even decorate your dining room with your grandmother's fine china or other items that have been handed down to you. When personalizing your dining room, make sure you don't go overboard - too many personal items can make your dining room feel cluttered and messy.

Decorating with bright colors is a fantastic way to infuse your home with energy, personality, and vibrancy. If you find the colors beige, gray, white, and creme boring, you might want to decorate your home with bright and bold colors. Consider your wardrobe when decorating your home.....do you wear khaki pants and a white shirt regularly, or do you dress in bright and bold colors? Do basic off-white colored walls make you feel comfortable and safe, or do they look extremely drab and boring to you? People are often intimidated when decorating because they are afraid to make a mistake or they want to play it safe for the next potential buyer of their home (even though they have no intention of selling anytime soon). Your home is yours, not the next owner, so make it what you want it to be (else you are basically renting your house from the next owner). Don't be afraid to do something different, even if it is not typical for your neighborhood. People will appreciate your unique approach to interior design and they might be inspired to use bright and bold colors in their homes also. It's crucial to approach decorating with bright colors strategically to avoid overwhelming looking interiors. Here are a few interior design tips, tricks, and techniques for mastering the art of decorating with bright colors to create stunning and impactful interiors that reflect your unique style and personality.. Less is MoreWhen decorating with bright and bold colors in your home, select 3 different dominant colors per room that will be your color scheme, but be cautious of using more. If you have more than 3 bright and bold colors in your room, it can start to feel like a circus and be overwhelming. Use the 3 colors in different proportions, such as your #1 color can be 50% of the dominant color in the room, your #2 color can be 35% of the dominant color in the room, and your #3 color can be 15% of the dominant color in the room. For a more interesting interior design, also consider using a lighter and darker version of each color to create more depth of color. Once you have 3 dominant colors in your room, consider adding 1 more color at a time as an experiment, but make sure you are willing to remove that extra color if the interior design is no longer what you desire. Skip Primary ColorsFor a more sophisticated look in your home, consider skipping the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) and decorate with blended colors instead. Decorating with exclusively primary colors in a home can often give the look of a preschool. Select color shades (a darker version of the color + black), tones (a more muted version of the color + gray), and tints (a lighter version of the color + white) for a more sophisticated color scheme. Opt for more unique colors, such as emerald green, rust, mustard yellow, deep purple, teal, turquoise, coral, fuchsia, saphire blue, burnt orange, lime green, aqua, and plum. Add Some Neutrals for ContrastBalance is key when decorating with bright colors. Black, white, and gray help accentuate the bright and bold colors by creating contrast and keeping the colors from being overly stimulating. Avoid decorating with too many other neutrals that have a light brown undertone, such as beige and khaki, which may make the bright and bold colors look muddy. You can also decorate using colors that are almost black to help your bright and bold colors pop, such as dark navy or dark teal. By using neutral backgrounds for walls, floors, and larger furniture pieces, you can prevent the space from feeling overwhelming and allow bright colors to take center stage. Natural ElementsTexture plays a crucial role in adding depth and visual interest to your decor, especially when working with bright colors. Add a few natural elements to your home decor for added texture and a touch of nature. You can add hardwood floors, a wicker basket, a bamboo tray, a rattan box, or a stone fireplace. Mix and match natural textures to add dimension and complexity to your decor, creating a visually engaging and dynamic space. Don't Overdo ItBright and bold colors are very powerful, so don't go overboard decorating with a million different colors, else your room might be overly stimulating and uncomfortable to spend time in. Decorate with your powerful colors in moderation. Think of how you want the room to feel in addition to how you want the room to look. Consider decorating with at least half of your room neutral and use bright and bold colors in the other half. You can keep the ceiling white, the doors black or white, and the flooring stained wood or a neutral carpet or tile. Keep Expensive Items NeutralThe bold and bright colors you love today may be the colors you hate tomorrow. Consider using your colors on lesser expensive decor items that you can change out in a few years, such as wall paint, pillows, and accessories. You can also use bright colors on dining chair seats (not backs) since they are relatively inexpensive to reupholster (you might even be able to do it yourself) and will probably be worn enough to need reupholstery in 5-10 years when you are ready for a color change. Keep your big ticket items, such as your sofa or dining table, a neutral color that will work with your next color scheme also. Not Too BusySince bold and bright colors demand so much attention, make sure the decor in the rest of your room is more subdued so your color choices can take center stage. Consider keeping decorative accessories to a minimum to avoid clutter on surfaces, unless you love the maximalist style. If you choose to decorate with many bright and bold colors, then consider using minimal patterns and embellishments. If you use fewer bold colors, feel free to use multiple patterns for interest. Furniture should typically not be too ornate when using bold colors since the colors will be the star of the show. Don't Forget LightingSince bold and bright colors can be darker than plain white, make sure the room is lit properly from multiple lighting sources. You can use a fabulous chandelier, wall sconces, lamps, accent lighting, tast lighting, table lamps, floor lamps, and more. Dimmer switches are a great option for being able to adjust light levels to set the appropriate mood, yet be very bright for cleaning purposes. Also consider using mirrors since they bounce light around a room. Ensure that your light bulbs are all the same color temperature, which is marked as K on the back of the package. The lower the number, the warmer (more yellow) the light. The higher number, the cooler (more blue) the light.
Maximalism is a design style that uses an abundance of wonderful items all on display at the same time. Bordering on cluttered, maximalism is all about surrounding yourself with the stuff you love. Many people have a dining room that is rarely used so they want to use their dining room for multiple purposes. A library dining room is a great option to use your dining room as a book storage, reading space, home office, homework space, and additional room in your home but still have it available those few times of year when you need a formal dining room. Here are a few interior design tips & tricks for turning your formal dining room into a library dining room. Design StyleBefore you start decorating your library dining room, you must first figure out the design style that you want in your room. Consider the overall feeling that you want your dining room library to have. Do you want it to be comfy & cozy where you can plop down and take your shoes off? Would you prefer an elegant and refined showplace to impress your guests? How about a dark & moody old library with antique books? Maybe a coloful & fun hangout space is more of what you want? Your dining room library is most likely open to other rooms in your home, so the style needs to complement those room styles also. It doesn't need to be the exact same style, but it does need to feel like it is cohesive and belongs in your home. Search for images online of interior design and home decor styles that you like as inspiration for your own home. A popular place to search is Pinterest where you can save your favorites. After you have saved many favorites, purge your least favorites until you are left with your best option. Once you have narrowed down a particular style, it will be easier to choose the right furniture, decor, and color scheme. Choose the Right FurnitureMake sure to select the best furniture for your library dining room so that it is able to serve dual purposes. The dining table is the centerpiece of the room, so it is important to choose one that is both practical to use as a desk and a dining table, as well as looks good and is in the style that you want for the room. Make sure to not choose a table that is too small so you can seat many people for dinner, but also one that is not too big that you cannot move around easily or have room for extra furniture for you to store your books. When you select your dining chairs, make sure that comfort takes priority over style since you might be sitting in those chairs for several hours at a time. Typically, a chair with an upholstered seat is more comfortable than one that is all wood, and an upholstered back is also better than a wood or metal back. Make sure you allow plenty of room to walk around your table. Of course, you will need bookshelves - bookshelves are a must-have in any dining room library. You can choose freestanding bookcases, built in bookshelves (perhaps with closed storage below for dining room storage or storage of not-so-pretty books), or wall mounted bookshelves. You could even have a bookcase that opens on a hinge, revealing a hidden room behind the bookcase. Depending on the size of your room, you might want bookshelves on only 1 wall, 2 walls, or maybe even all 4 walls. Arrange books and decor items on your bookcases alternating between vertical and horizontal orientations for a more unique display that doesn't look like a boring and basic public library. In addition to the dining table and chairs, you may also want to include a few extra pieces of furniture, such as a buffet, china cabinet, or sideboard for storage or a comfortable armchair for reading. Incorporate ArtworkAdd artwork to your library dining room so your room looks like a home and not like a boring and sterile library basement. Your artwork can be original framed art, photography, sculpture, pottery, something you created yourself, or whatever you find beautiful. Don't just select art to fill the space - make sure to take your time finding art that you truly love! Try to have your art cover 60-75% of your empty wall that is not covered by furniture, curtains, or something else. Framed family photos can also be used as art. If you have smaller pieces of art, cluster them together to create a gallery wall where all of the pieces of art together feel like one larger art collection. Try to position your art so there is nearly equal spacing between all of the pieces. You can even display smaller pieces of art on bookshelves to break up the sea of books. Choose the Right LightingThe best designed rooms don't settle for just one light source in the center of the ceiling. This is especially imporant in a library dining room where good lighting is required for reading. Try to have multiple sources of light in your room to make the room more interesting and allow multiple different activities to work in the same space. You should have ambient light, which is all-over light, that will typically come from a chandelier in the middle of your library dining room. Don't settle for a basic small chandelier - make it special and unique. Task lighting is second most important to ensure you have lighting for your specific task, which is reading. Make sure that there are lamps that are focused in the areas where you might read or work. Accent lighting makes your room look more interesting, so add lights inside your bookcases and/or picture lights at the top of your bookcases & art to highlight featured books and artwork. Color SchemeMake sure to create a well developed color scheme before decorating your library dining room. The easiest way to create a color scheme is to select one large item for your room, perhaps a large rug or large piece of art, that has multiple colors in it and use those colors as your color scheme. You should select at least 3 colors (but you can use more) and repeat those colors in 3 or more places throughout your room. Also use lighter and darker versions of your preferred colors to add depth of color. You can "cheat" a bit by covering some of your lesser important books in a paper jacket that is one of your color scheme colors. Another idea is to get a can of spray paint in a unique color that you like and paint a few of your older accessories that you no longer like in the new color for a fresh and new look. Choose the Right TablewareDon't forget that your library dining room also needs to function as a dining room on occasion, so you will need to get all the items you need for a dinner party. Make sure to know the washing instructions of the china you select, since a lot of fine china is not dishwasher safe. Consider mixing and matching sets of china for a custom look. For a formal mismatched look, everyone should have identical place settings, however each piece of the place setting is from a different china set. You can even swap out a few pieces seasonally or per occasion to set the appropriate mood. For a more casual mismatched look, each place setting can be different, but ensure that the color, pattern, or some other element of the place setting is the same among all of the sets so it creates cohesion. Consider using accent places that have a bold color and/or pattern since everyone has seen basic white china with a gold or silver edge. Incorporate FabricsFabrics make a room feel more cozy and less sterile. They can also reduce echoes and make a room more quiet. Select upholstered dining chairs with both an upholstered seat and an upholstered back for optimal comfort during meals and other activities. Most dining chairs come with a basic white fabric that is rather plain and boring. Consider reupholstering your chairs for a one-of-a-kind look that complements your design style and color scheme. Also add curtains, an area rug, and maybe even some throw pillows to add softness and style to your room. When you are using your library dining room for dining, you might also need a tablecloth, a table runner, and/or placemats. Don't be afraid to mix and match different colors, textures, and patterns for a unique look that is yours and yours alone. Add Decorative AccentsTraditional dining rooms typically don't have too many decorative accents, however a library dining room is more like a living room, so it should have decor. If you want a vintage look, consider adding antique globes, vintage typewriters, and/or old-fashioned cameras that no only look good but are also conversation starters. Bonus points if those items belong to you or a family member with a story to tell about the items. If you want a more modern look, consider adding abstract sculptures or modern art pieces. You can also add decor that ties into your love of books, such as bookends, paperweights, or other book-related decorative items. For added color and to make your library dining room feel less sterile, add fresh flowers and/or plants. Adding a fireplace would really make your library dining room a place that you never want to leave.
English country style is popular in many places in the world, not just England, because of its warmth, coziness, and character. This style started in the rural parts of England and feature an abundance of antique, vintage, and/or thrifted traditional floral prints, natural materials, and classic furniture pieces that seem to be collected throughout the years. Here are some interior designer tips & tricks for how to decorate in an English country style in your home. Furniture PiecesThere are several classic furniture pieces commonly found in English country style homes. These furniture pieces are typically antiques. A common English country sofa is a brown leather chesterfield sofa. Other options include a roll-arm sofa or a slipcovered sofa with a skirt in a white, khaki, or cream color. Wingback chairs are very popular in living rooms. Bookcases, or perhaps an entire library, is very common in the English country style. The bookcases are filled with mostly vintage or antique books. Smaller English country homes often have a vintage or antique farmhouse table in the kitchen. Many larger homes will have a billiard or card table. Bedrooms often have a four poster bed. Choose a Warm and Inviting Color PaletteEnglish country style homes are decorated in soft and natural colors that have a comforting and natural feel. Muted pastel colors like pale pink, soft blue, and sage green are perfect to use in an English country style, since they mirror the colors of the blooming flowers and lush greenery of the English countryside. Don't forget the white or cream colored accents so the room does not look too dark. Earthy tones like terracotta, rust, and mustard yellow are also great options, as they create a cozy and inviting ambiance. A neutral brown stained wood color is also prevalent in furniture as well as architecture. Embrace Natural MaterialsUse natural materials when decorating your English country style for the most authentic look. Look for pieces made from wood, leather, wicker, rattan, and other organic materials that add a sense of warmth and texture to your home. Stained wood furniture pieces are a great choice for an English country style, however older wood pieces in poor repair can be repaired and painted to give them new life. Wood or stone floors are most common in traditional English country homes. Brick flooring is also a good option. Stone interior walls or fireplaces are another natural feature of many English country cottages. ArtThe most popular art for an English country home is a framed oil painting #ad. These paintings usually have an ornate antique gold or stained wood frame. The subject matter of these paintings are typically family portraits, landscapes, or animals, such as dogs and/or horses. Don't worry too much about your artwork matching, since art that looks collected throughout the years is very common. Add Floral PrintsOne of the most popular repeating elements in an English country style home is the use of floral prints and floral patterns. Consider decorating your home with floral patterns on your upholstery, curtains, bedding, and/or wallpaper. Popular flower types used in the English country style are the rose, peony, lily, lavender, poppy, and iris. You can mix and match different floral patterns in your room for a unique eclectic look that is one-of-a-kind. If you don't want to cover your room with flowers everywhere, try decorating with just a few floral patterns through accessories like throw pillows, blankets, or rugs. A needlepoint pillow #ad or seat cushion with a floral pattern is very common in English country decorating. Layer TexturesFor a cozy English country room, make sure to layer your textiles instead of just using the same fabrics throughout your room.Decorate with different textiles (like wool, linen, leather, velvet, and cotton) to create a room that feels collected and eclectic. Mixing and matching different textiles adds depth and interest to your space. For example, a wool plaid/tartan blanket draped over a linen sofa creates a cozy and inviting spot to sit for a while and read your favorite book. A linen pillow on a leather sofa creates a nice textural contrast so the leather sofa does not look so formal or uninviting. Choose Cozy LightingLighting is an important element in any design aesthetic, but it is especially in an English country style. English country style homes tend to be a little dark and moody, perhaps because England is known for its dark and dreary weather. Make sure to use multiple sources of lighting instead of just your overhead light bulb in the center of your ceiling. Many designers prefer to not use ceiling light at all except for when bright light is required, such as when cleaning. Table lamps, floor lamps, uplighting on something with an interesting texture (a stone wall or a potted plant), chandeliers, and wall sconces are great lighting options. Make sure that all of your light bulbs are the same color of light, listed as a number followed by the letter K. For a warm aesthetic, you will want light bulbs around 2700K. Mix and Match PatternsMixing and matching patterns is one of the characteristics of English country style since many of the items have been passed down from generation to generation. Don't be afraid to combine floral prints with stripes or plaid patterns with checks. When mixing patterns, don't select patterns with the same scale, else the patterns might feel too cluttered. Instead, select a large scale pattern, such as a floral, with a medium scale pattern, such as a plaid/tartan, with a small scale pattern, such as a small stripe print. The key is to keep the colors cohesive so the patterns don't clash. Experiment putting different items together to see how they look. You never know which items might unexpectedly look good together! Incorporate Vintage and Antique PiecesDecorating your home with vintage and antique pieces is the best way to get the English country look. These pieces add character to your home since they are unique and often a much higher quality than items made today. Look for vintage artwork, old-fashioned lighting fixtures, and classic furniture pieces to create a lived-in and comfortable environment. Understand the difference between distressing and damage. Distressing is when furniture or decor is altered over time from standard wear and tear. Damage is when furniture or decor is altered all at once, such as your dog chewing on the leg of your table while stressed out due to scary loud weather. Distressing is good since it showcases the heritage of the piece. Damage is bad and should be repaired. WoodworkWoodwork is very popular in English country homes. Exposed ceiling beams that might look a little rustic are very common. Some larger homes have stained wood paneling on the entire wall instead of plain drywall walls. Smaller homes will often have painted paneling, such as beadboard or wainscotting. This paneling sometimes covers the entire wall but other times is only on the bottom third of the wall. The woodwork is often painted white or a light color to make the home look lighter & brighter or a darker color to make the home feel a bit cozier. Add AccessoriesDon't forget to add many accessories to your English country-style home since many homes of this style tend to be nearly cluttered with an abundance of stuff that has been passed down to them for generations. Look for items like floral-printed cushions, woven baskets, and vintage knick-knacks to add personality and character to your space. Walking sticks, equestrian items, Staffordshire dog statues #ad taxidermy, antique books, pottery, classic hunting items, floral china, and a grandfather clock are common English country home accessories. Embrace ImperfectionOne of the defining characteristics of English country style is its imperfection since many of the high quality pieces of furniture and decor have been used by the family for many decades. Embrace the lived-in and almost shabby look of antique and vintage pieces. Look for furniture with patina and character and don't be afraid to mix and match different styles & eras. English country homes are typically not perfectly curated and well designed. More commonly, the items in the home have been collected over decades and tend to look a bit cluttered and a tiny bit messy. Imperfection adds personality and charm to your space and gives your home a sense of history. Live Plants and FlowersEnglish country style celebrates the outdoors, especially during the cold winters. Adding potted plants #ad can make a sterile room feel more alive and happy. You can also add fresh flowers for a colorful touch either weekly or on special occasions when you have guests. Consider planting your own cut flower garden so you can bring seasonal flowers inside your home. Roses are a very popular flower choice for a cutting garden.
