COLOR FOR NATURAL STONE FIREPLACE House and Home IN EVERY HOME there are elements we can't change - at least not right away. There are things we need to live with - maybe its a previous owners stone or tile selections, or wood cabinet or floor colors, but whatever the item - there is a way to live with it if you get a little creative. Leah was faced with a wall of outdated paneling, a stone fireplace with lots of orange tones, and no idea of what color to use on her walls to pull it all together: I just purchased a home, my closing date is tentatively set up for 3/11/13. I have been obsessed with finding the right paint colors. Right now, my bone of contention is the attached fireplace/living room. I have been reading a lot about undertones in the beiges and from what I can tell there are orange undertones in this fireplace. I just read your article about being "fleshy," which I don't want, and I definitely don't want "pinky." The gold tone ones seem to look the best to me, which throws off my plan for the dining room, which is off of this room as I wanted to paint it a gold, ughhhhhh.... To make the fireplace stand out, I was going to either paint the wood alongside a white and add shelving, but was thinking of putting the wall color over the fireplace to tie together. My couch is an off white, light microfiber with dark brown trim, sectional, which I wouldn't of bought it if I knew I was going to be finding this house. So I guess my one question is, what color would work best in this room? Thank you! Forever Grateful, Leah Leah, congratulations on your new home. You must be so excited! I hope I can help you make it beautiful. To downplay the orange tones in your fireplace, I would use a greige or a gray. Gray is a cool tone that will make your floors and stone on the fireplace stand out and look its best. A grayed down beige (greige) will never look fleshy or pinky. Both colors would blend in perfectly with your fireplace as there are many of the same tones present in the stone, and your sofa will look lovely against the wall in those tones. I would paint the wood paneled walls a creamy white (Benjamin Moore Dove White is an excellent choice), including over the fireplace, and all the trim in the room - around the windows, and mouldings, baseboards, etc. White keeps those gray tones fresh. Here are a couple of suggestions for good greige and gray colors for your room. BENNINGTON GRAY Benjamin Moore Bennington Gray has a warm undertone and is in the greige family. When testing these colors in your home, paint two coats (allowing to dry between coats) on as large a piece of foam core board or poster board that you can - at least 12" square - so you can hold it next to the fireplace stone and also see its effect on the walls. CAPE MAY COBBLESTONE Benjamin Moore Cape May Cobblestone is a medium tone gray. Works well against orange tones and browns. STONINGTON GRAY Benjamin Moore Stonington is a lighter cool gray. Good contrast to the warmth of the fireplace stone color and the wood tones. MANCHESTER TAN Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan has a healthy dose of gold in it, so it should not go fleshy or pinky on you. SHAKER BEIGE Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige has a yellow undertone with a bit of gray to keep it muted. Try 2 or 3 of these colors in your room, as paint color reacts differently in each home and in different light. I hope this helps you!

MEOWWW I've always loved the color palette of a Siamese Cat. Creamy beiges, deep browns, dark charcoal, and those calm blue eyes. There is a reason they are so beautiful. Nature knows the perfect color palette! Hi Claudine, I just stumbled across your fabulous blog while searching for paint colors for my new home. I'm really having difficulty choosing colors for our sun-filled new center hall colonial. I know I want a "blue", such as labrador blue, In one of the rooms (living room, dining room w/ chair rail). I'm having difficulty finding other paint colors for my dining/living, big family room, and then the hallway. We really like browns, but aren't afraid of color. Also, attached is a picture of my kitchen tiles, which wouldn't be my first choice. Thank you in advance for ANY help you offer me. Kristen Ferranti Kristen, I love your home. There are a lot of lovely details which will look so fresh in white against a beautiful wall color. Lets start with the wall color that you know you want - Labrador Blue by Benjamin Moore - and the fact that you like browns, and see if we can come up with a palette. Houzz Benjamin Moore (Labrador Blue) is a strong grey blue. Strong enough that it is best served up with a good helping of white, like in this room, to keep it from overpowering. In a very sunny room it may be less strong. I like it for entry halls, bedrooms, bathrooms and separate formal dining rooms. My South Shore House Benjamin Moore (Annapolis Gray) Because of the blue/gray Labrador color you liked, I thought we should explore some greys, blues and browns for your home. Annapolis Gray above has enough light in it that it works even in stairwells and hallways. Below is an example of the palette I think would be beautiful for your home.... Grays, Tans/Beige, Blues, Blue Greens. Houzz Benjamin Moore (Cape Hatteras Sand) This palette of tan/beige/brown, blues, greens and grays is soothing and will flow easily from room to room in your home. Adding some dark wood furniture or flooring will further ground this palette. I chose a cooler palette because you mentioned this is a very sunny home. The sunlight will be warm, and the cool colors are a lovely contrast. Keep your wood trim fresh white (Benjamin Moore - White Dove or Atrium White). Houzz Family rooms are more casual and a nice tan or beige with a gray undertone is a great choice. This is a very popular color with Benjamin Moore (Bleeker Beige) Houzz Benjamin Moore (Camouflage) You can add a touch of green gray to the palette as well. Camouflage is a great kitchen color or bathroom color. Beachnut Lane A lighter, less strong blue is Benjamin Moore's Palladian Blue above and below. It has a gray undertone and a touch of green. Wythe Blue (also Benjamin Moore) is also a great choice Evolution of Style This is another example of the blue, gray, beige/tan palette - beautiful, isn't it? Houzz Benjamin Moore (Northern Cliffs) is beautiful in a living/dining area or the hallway. Its equally beautiful with tans/beiges and blues/greens. Take a peek at the kitchen in the distance - clever use of color in the blue ceiling. Every home needs a little drama. Benjamin Moore (Kendall Charcoal) is a warm charcoal, perfect for a dramatic dining, a cozy bedroom or a feature wall in a lighter room Houzz Revere Pewter (Benjamin Moore) is a wonderful warm gray that everyone LOVES. Look how beautifully it plays with the blues and chocolate brown wood tones in this room. It would be lovely in any room. Benjamin Moore (Sea Haze) I know I have given you more choices than you needed. Basically, move through your color palette in the rooms you are painting. If you choose a gray for the entry/hall, select a blue for the dining/living area and a brown/tan or beige for the family room. If you use all colors in all three rooms your decor will flow naturally from room to room and your furniture and accessories will look good in any room. Benjamin Moore (Springfield Tan) You will have to imagine the blues and grays with the Springfield Tan walls above. I love the color and can promise the other colors will look great with it as well. Its a perfect family room color, and so is this warm Sherwood Tan below. Benjamin Moore (Sherwood Tan) So, good luck with your choices and let me know if you need any more help.

Whew. December is here. Agggh. My kids were out all last week (ridiculous to have a week off for Thanksgiving, but I digress), we were out of town for a good portion of that week, then I returned home and got sick. Yay! But, the show must go on. I have been busy preparing for my Holiday Pop-Up Shop Thursday night and Friday. Please do come out if you're in the Nashville/Franklin area (see details below). Lots of goodies to be had. I'll be sharing sneak peeks on Instagram as well. Now, on to Gentleman's Gray. Do you ever notice how once you buy a car or a sweater or anything, you start seeing it everywhere or at least a lot more than you did before said purchase? Well, in this case, it's a color. I've been working with a client on her office, and I suggested we go dark and dramatic since the rest of the house is more neutral. Dark blue is an accent in other rooms, so it seemed the logical choice. After painting some swatches on the wall, she went with my suggestion of Benjamin Moore's Gentleman's Gray. I must say, it looks amazing. While the room is not done yet (still needs some more furniture, lighting, accessories, draperies, etc.), I just snapped an "in-progress" photo the other day to show the room color. Isn't it so pretty? To give you an idea what a difference paint can make, here's the before . . . Dramatic change, right? So, I get my House Beautiful last week, and one of the features is designer Scott Meacham Wood's apartment in San Francisco. The color of his main living room? Gentleman's Gray, of course. His room looks more teal but either way - same color supposedly. Then yesterday my friend Sissy from Blue Hydrangea blogged about her husband's office that she recently had painted. Of course, I loved it and commented that I had used a dark blue for a client called Gentleman's Gray recently. Well, she emailed me back because that was her color too. All that is to say, that if you're looking for a pretty, rich dark blue (have no idea why they call it gray??), this is a great choice. Now, on to the sale. Please see the details below . . . if you have any questions, please email me. If you come Thursday night, there's a chance I might even have some wine. Hope to see you there!

Over the past month, we've been working Saturdays on two projects: the back entry, and refinishing the hardwoods in the hallway and back bedroom. When we emptied out the furniture from the back bedroom last weekend it all landed in our living room. Such a mess. And you know how one project sometimes leads to another? Well, I decided that since all the furniture was out of that bedroom we might as well paint. Yeah, I know. Glutton for punishment, right? So this weekend was a marathon of finishing craziness. Do you ever get to a point in the project and you just want to be done? I'm past there :). The sooner my house is back to normal and I can walk through my living room, the happier I'll be. As a reminder, here is what the back bedroom looked like before, well almost before, this whole process. I wish I could say the mess was because we were tearing up the carpet, but this room was pretty much a complete mess most of the time anyway. Sadly, this picture is a pretty accurate before. The carpet was DISGUSTING: stained and incredibly smelly once we started pulling it up. The wall color was not only hideous, but poorly applied. Here's what the room looked like when I got started on Friday. We'd finished scraping and sanding the floor last Saturday. Friday morning I washed all the walls, the ceiling and the fan. They were filthy from all the floor sanding. I took a nice long break to help my mom start picking out new living room furniture (so fun!) and then my exciting friday night consisted of: running to the paint store, taping off the newly sanded floors, filling wall holes, scraping the windows, filling wood holes and priming. Saturday morning our friends were back (they are SO AWESOME!) and we girls started painting. We painted one coat on the ceiling, two coats on the wall and two coats of trim. It took all day. Here's what the room looked like Sunday morning. Oh hello amazing brownish/grey color. Lovely to meet you in my home. It's a little hard to tell, but the floors are very matte/fresh wood. Chris had to work, so I got going on the floors! I did a wood sealer and a coat of clear satin finish yesterday. I took today off from work so I could just get this done already. Two coats of sealer later and we have beautiful FINISHED hardwoods! And here's what the room looks like now. So bright and shiny. I was so lucky to get a little sun between rain showers because it really does make the room glow. I can't wait to get the furniture back in .... but that will probably be at least a week. We want to make sure the floors are good and dry before we started bringing stuff back in. I also have a few ideas up my sleeve to freshen up my craft space, so until then, these are the official *afters* of the room. The hardwoods are by no means perfect. You can actually see the cut marks along the old linoleum. We didn't expect perfection though. The floors are over 80 years old. They have amazing character and help tell the story of this house, and I am so glad we stripped off the nasty carpet to reveal them. Oh, and that mess I was talking about earlier? This is what my living room looks like right now. Driving. Me. Crazy. I'm not going to show you the hallway today. The floors are done, but there's a couple little things I need to do still before I show it off. It'll be soon though :). How was your weekend? What did you do? Any productive house projects? I'd love to hear!
Have a room that could use an extra dose of drama? This week, Benjamin Moore announced CENTURY, their new luxury line of paint that is not only gorgeous, but has a tactile finish that adds a new experience to a space. They’re calling the finish “soft touch matte,” and it reportedly feels like a soft leather glove.

As the entire interior of the house needs to be repainted at once and very few fabrics or specific room color schemes have been finalized at this point, almost every room will be painted in the same color scheme: neutral. The beauty of a neutral color scheme is that anything can go with it. The downsides are that there is no such thing as a true "neutral" scheme -- every shade of off white casts a different hue -- and that it needs to be paired with interesting furniture and fabrics to make it seem personal and inviting. In Jane's case, the fabrics from her old house that she's carrying over to this house, and the selections to date (notably the tumbled travertine in the sun room), call for a brown/tan/cream hued neutral, rather than a gray or yellow hued neutral. She wants to highlight the molding throughout the house with a contrasting--but not too contrasting--complimentary color. After many rounds of color choices, her selection has been made. The walls will be painted in Benjamin Moore's Palace White (in a flat finish) and the molding will be painted in Mayonnaise (in a semi-gloss finish). The ceiling will also be painted Mayonnaise (in a flat finish). Below are screenshots from Benjamin Moore's website of the two colors, which look different in person than they do on your computer screen.
