Visitation to the otherworldly landscape has seen a noticeable increase since the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness was included in National Geographic Traveler’s list of “Best Trips 2019.”
Alberta Badlands, Ca Amazing World beautiful amazing
I don't know where to begin with this adventure. It was an adventure indeed. This journey took us to unfamiliar lands of the Four Corners region of New Mexico. The area is called the Bisti/De Na Sin Wilderness. The area is spread out for miles. There are no trails or distinctive markings for these areas. The surrounding the area is high desert, completely flat with grassy plains, one could see for miles, unless you journey out to find these other worldly landscapes. Once you have found this bizarre landscape, it is something that you have NEVER seen before. The landscape will leave you speechless, in awe, trying to find words to describe what you are seeing. The array of colors vary from oranges, reds, magenta, yellow, whites, greys, purples, blacks, olive greens and other colors I can't describe. The hoodoos vary in size from less than twelve inches to a towering forty plus feet in height. It is one of the most spectacular places I've ever photographed. The possibilities are endless. On this particular evening there was a break in the cloud cover, with a huge gap on the horizon. There were still plenty of clouds hanging in the area. Once the sun broke through the clouds, the light illuminated the hoodoos with a light that can't be explained. The light was literally golden at one point. One would have to see this light with their own eyes. The colors of the hoodoos lit up and became saturated beyond belief. It was like the hoodoos came to life. The landscape completely changed, the clouds to the north west and north east began to fill with color/light. I began to quickly set up. All of a sudden, the sky starts to form intense virga! As I've said before, capturing virga is a rare occurrence. Watching the clouds dance, while mother nature creates its magic was one of the most spectacular scenes I have ever witnessed. It was refreshing seeing a totally different and new landscape. I have a new favorite location. Until the next time. Peace

Seemingly dry and never ending deserts own much more than dry sand and lack of life and desire to live. Deserts are a beautiful part of the earth and conceal many deep mysteries. The Badlands are a type of parched, sunbaked terrain characterized by jagged rock, cracked earth and, of course, minimal vegetation. It’s a harsh environment of lifeless wasteland but there is also good news to be found in the badlands. For the patient observer, like photographer Guy Tal, there is a delicate beauty that reveals itself only so often. “On rare years,” says Tal, describing his series of photos taken in the American West, “wildflowers burst into stunning display of color, transforming the desert into a veritable garden for just few precious days.” The reason, apparently, is that vegetation in the region has adapted to the climate. I have been determined to find this crazy rock formation nicknamed the King-Of-Wings for several years. I've seen a few photos of it and wanted desperately to find it. It is the most obscure thing I have ever found. This hoodoo seems to somehow defy the laws of physics and gravity. (no, this is not photoshopped) Who knows how much longer this thing will keep standing. I really wanted to document it before it collapses. A lot of research went into this. It's not in Bisti Badlands as I had previously thought. It's about 10 miles south of that in another badlands called Ah Shi Sle Pah (yes, really) The badlands around Bisti stretch out for about 20 miles. Trying to find one particular rock formation amidst that 20 miles is like quite literally finding a needle in a haystack. It was about a four mile hike from the nearest road. (when I say road, I mean a few tire tracks thru the desert) The road abruptly ended at a cliff going down to a great big wash. From there it was on foot for about four miles putting 100% faith in my GPS, climbing through washes and under fences. It's difficult blindly following a little dot on a GPS screen, especially when the GPS keeps telling you to go left, when your instincts are telling you to go right. I could see a bunch of badlands off to the right, but the direction I was heading was nothing but dead grass and sagebrush. Eventually the GPS won, as I came over a hill and, lo and behold, there was a few miles of badlands ahead. As soon as I saw those badlands, I was elated. I knew the GPS must be right. This formation was in there. I knew it. Scaling down a cliff into the badlands was a challenge. So… I found it! This is one of the scariest hikes I have ever done. Not that it was dangerous or challenging. Just scary putting 100% faith in a dot on a GPS screen. Scary knowing that if the battery on the GPS dies, I have almost no chance of ever finding my way back to my truck which was parked in the middle of the desert about 15 miles from the nearest paved road. Scary that if I did have a problem, I had absolutely no cell phone signal. Even scarier that by the time I found this thing, it was only an hour before sunset, and I had hiked over two hours to find it. I REALLY didn't want to try to find my truck in the dark. There is no moon right now, so it would be REALLY dark! I shot this quickly and started heading back immediately. Luckily I was able to find a much more direct route back, and did manage to find my truck shortly after sunset.
