A beautiful pair of leaf shaped silver bowls with teak handles, designed by Tapio Wirkkala and manufactured by Kultakeskus Oy in Finland in the 1960s. A perfect display of Wirkkala integrating nature into his designs. Both pieces are in complete original condition with nice patinas. Both pieces are stamped. Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a genius designer and sculptor who was recognized as a leading figure in Finnish arts and crafts in the "golden era" of 1950s-1960s. Sometimes even compared to Da Vinci, his incredible understanding of geometry resulted in some truly amazing pieces that simply can't be compared to any other designer's works. He used a number of different materials in his designs including glass, wood, plywood, silver and ceramics, and always had a very unique and distinct approach to his designs. Wirkkala has been awarded a great number of Triennale awards, gold medals and special recognitions, and is internationally acclaimed. His works can be found in a huge number of museums and private collections.
Rare and very beautiful Scandinavian glass design, a rather large footed bowl or plate, suitable for fruit or confectionery made by Iittala Finland. The bowl is known as "Avanto" (which translate to the Finnish word for ice hole). It is a thing of beauty with shiny clear crystal glass, which is, vividly structured under the bottom and highly polished on the top. The design bear resemblance of a water vortex or whirlpool, swirling around a hole in the ice. As always has Wirkkala’s design a timeless modern feeling and this is very rare Finnish glass design object from one of Finland's most famous designers in great condition.
