In celebration of an upcoming revised edition of Dungeons & Dragons, David Kushner sits down and discussed the long history of this classic role-playing game with one of its founding fathers, the late Gary Gygax. Read what Gygax had to say about his lifelong passion for promoting creativity and imagination throughout generations of gamers.
There are a lot of different things that can affect your character’s AC. New players sometimes struggle with this and even experienced players can sometimes get it wrong. Here is a checklist …
Last week I wrote a post about how to use lair and legendary actions as a way to combat the issues with the action economy for boss fights in D&D 5e.
The cover for the new Dungeon Master’s Guide features a powerful lich who bears a striking resemblance to Iddy the Lich, the mascot for this blog. I have joked about Iddy being on the cover o…
October 27th 2019, 7:16:38 pm a day ago prokopetz If I was going to put the Horrible Goose in a D&D game, I wouldn't make it some big high-CR threat it'd just be a regular goose that's capable of regular goose stuff, with three significant exceptions: 1. It can show up anywhere, even if there's no reasonable way for it to have gotten there. 2. It seems to have limited ontological intertia. If the players imprison it, it vanishes from its prison when they're not looking. If they kill it, another goose shows up eventually. It'd be impossible to prove that it's always the same goose, save for the third notable trait... 3. ...namely, that it doesn't show up in divinations. Like, at all. Predictions don't take it into account. Scrying on its location reveals an empty room. Spells that would detect it or read its mind act like there's no valid target present. If the cleric communes with their god and asks about it, their god hass no idea what the cleric is talking about. It might take some doing to arrange for the players to become aware of this property, so don't force it - the opportunity will arise! There we go. No goofy boss monster tricks, yet it's guaranteed to drive your players nuts not even by harassing them, necessarily, but just by existing as they try to figure out what it means, particularly once they learn of the third trait discussed above. battlecrazed-axe-mage I hate it. It's going in every game I run forever Source: prokopetz
Every Dungeon Master has there own way of doing things. Of course there are those archetypes that some people fit into, but each one will and SHOULD still be different from the next. Just as each p…
Dungeon masters will always have a unique role at the table, but it's important to think of them as players like everyone else. Here's why.
Have a new roll table this week, roll for Madness. I made this table for an upcoming adventure that goes a little more in-depth than blog posts have here in the past. The adventure takes place in Limbo, the plane of chaos. The players in that adventure will find themselves floating lost in the chaotic soup that is Limbo, some of them will have surely developed some form of delusional madness in that time. This table can be adapted for whatever you need, but in my adventure Lawful characters are more susceptible to the madness caused by Limbo, while Chaotic characters are less susceptible. Depending on your table the madness can either be temporary (a day or two), or last until the character seeks some sort of treatment, be it magical healing like dealing with a curse, or coming to terms with their delusion through the help of their friends.
