This embroidery is inspired by the idea of neurogenesis. It's the regrowth of neurons after illness, such as depression. For me it symbolizes rebirth and healing. It is made with high quality threads on a background of eco printed organic wool and organic linen. I used madder, walnut husks and berries to get these prints. In this case I also used some metallic threads that give a modest, but beautiful shine to the work. The middle of the neuron is appliqued with organic linen dyed with madder. The piece measures 30 cm x 24 cm/ 11.8 inch x 9.4 inch and is stretched around canvas stretcher bars. Please allow for some difference in colour due to the variation in digital screens. Natural colours from plant dyes have up to ten times more colour components than industrial colours. This means it's difficult to catch their beauty on a screen.

This embroidery is made with high quality threads on a background of eco printed wool. I used onion skins, walnut husks, leaves and berries to get this print. By using satin stitch and French knots in multiple shades, I created organic forms that seem to grow in their own ecosystem. But you can also see this as nebulae, drifting in a imagined cosmos. The satin stitch gives a lovely sheen to the embroidery. It contrasts beautifully with the matte background. These first few photos show my Eco Print bundles after steaming. These bundles are filled with the leaves of maple, sage, mint, basil, lavender, and rosemary. Pomegranate skin, onion skins and 2 of the bundles have iron in them. The fabric used was cotton, linen and silk. Mordants included soda ash, alum, copper, and iron on a couple. There is of course tannin from the leaves. I hope I can make myself wait at least a few days before opening them ;-) The next few photos show some of my Eco dyed cloth collages. I am absolutely loving adding the stitching element to them. It is very meditative and a bit addicting as well. This last one is a work in progress

I finished it yesterday- close up of 'grasses by the canal' 11cm x 31cm. Paint and dye on calico. Hand stitched. 3 layers of fabric. Whole thing- but long and thin so difficult for photos. I tried to capture the bright light of summer and dappled shadows - something to work on ( next time, next time) I am pleased with it but always there is knowledge that it could be better and that is the drive that keeps me working! Hot summer days here- no rain for the garden. Meals eaten outside on the new patio under the parasol. Summer clothes. We are not used to this!
