Hand-painted. This is one of the largest decorative jars in Japan. The landscape painting style depicts a fantasy world with mountains, rivers, people, and houses, which was originally introduced in China. The most common Japanese patterns are said to have originated from picture books printed with woodblocks in Edo and Naniwa regions during the Kanbun, Genroku, and Kyoho periods of the Edo era. Designs were chosen from picture books such as "Ehon Tsuho-shi", "Oshi-e Te-Kagami", "Ehon Seiga-cho", and "Ehon Noyama gusa" and were painted in a pattern that harmonized with the shape of the jar or dish.

In Western eyes, the delicately cut piece of food is often regarded as central to traditional Japanese cooking. The skilful use of the knife is indeed one of the most prominent features of the Japanese kitchen, and mastery of various cutting-techniques is a matter of course to the Japanese chef as well as to the ambitious homemaker.
