The Great Smog of '52 or Big Smoke was a severe air pollution event that affected London during December 1952. A period of cold weather, combined with an anticyclone and windless conditions, collected airborne pollutants mostly from the use of coal to form a thick layer of smog over the city. It lasted from Friday 5 to Tuesday 9 December 1952, and then dispersed quickly after a change of weather. Although it caused major disruption due to the effect on visibility, and even penetrated indoor areas, it was not thought to be a significant event at the time, with London having experienced many smog events in the past, so called "pea soupers". However, medical reports in the following weeks estimated that 4,000 people had died prematurely and 100,000 more were made ill because of the smog's effects on the human respiratory tract. More recent research suggests that the number of fatalities was considerably greater at about 12,000.
Print Title: Foggy Morning Train Location: London, England Orientation: Landscape Story: Even late morning, London was shrouded in a heavy fog so thick you could barely see the boats floating in the middle of the river when walking along its edge. A few determined leaves clung to scraggly branches in the park, fading in the distance. Lone benches glistened with mist, droplets clung to the intricate strands of spiderwebs, invisible dogs barked at invisible balls and swooping gulls. People walked in silence, as if in a dream from the softness of the horizon, first as ghosts, then figures slowly emerging as they grew closer. These are the train tracks that run through Putney. We might not have the New York snow I know and love for winter, but the mysterious fog that settles over the city on these cold and grey mornings holds a different type of magic. Print Title: Gratwick Park Sunset Location: North Tonawanda, New York, USA Orientation: Landscape Story: I grew up about 15 minutes drive from the thundering Niagara Falls that slows only slightly in the intense winter season. I love walking around at that time when there are few tourists, the mist freezing in the air, sticking your eyelashes together, coating everything from individual blades of grass to tree branches in thick ice. Long icicles hang from the gorge. Brrrr, but beautiful!
