The moment they hear the investigator music start to play in the background, the students rip open the mysterious black box that has caution tape wrapped tightly around the outside. Their hands plunge into the evidence box like archaeologists dive into a treasure chest full of gold. Each student has a proof pamphlet firmly held in their fingertips, almost too close to their goggle-covered eyes. Some read their job description aloud to their peers loud and clear, while others opt to read chorally and still others examine the introduction silently in their minds. Hello, all! Mollie here! This short vignette is a typical scene from the first few minutes of an Information Investigators session. Iโm writing today as a continuation of our Information Investigators blog post series that we recently started following our presentation at the Michigan Reading Association Conference. If you missed our first post of this series, click HERE to read up on what Information Investigators is all about! Basically, Amy and I have created a process and format called Information Investigators, where students are learning Science and Language Arts standards in small groups through an integrated, collaborative, and authentic project-based style. Within this post, you will find tips on how to create an essential question. This is the starting step to get in order before putting together your Information Investigator pamphlet. In our opinion, we think of essential questions as vital questions that are intellectually challenging and spark conversation. Essential questions call for higher-level thinking, including, but not limited to, analyzing, inferring, evaluating, and predicting. These types of questions are difficult to create, but fear not because you can do it! When they are used appropriately, you will see the benefits through the growth in your studentsโ knowledge. .:. Choose an important Science standard .:. To begin, you first need a topic to base your essential question on. Choose a Science teaching standard from either your state standards or the proposed Next Generation standards that you would like to be the focus of your studentsโ investigation. This standard will be the main goal of your studentsโ entire work during this process. Sometimes we choose standards that we have not covered previously because we are doing the investigation as an introduction to the unit and other times we choose a standard that our students have already studied because itโs a continuation or review of their learning. Itโs up to you to choose which point of the unit you want to use this format and which standard you want to cover! .:. Unpack the standard .:. We use the term โunpackโ a ton with our students. What we mean by this is to think about what is inside of the standard. How can you break it down? What does the standard require students to know in order to be successful at showing knowledge of the standard independently? Is there any background knowledge that the students must have in their schema? Answering these questions will help give you specific ideas for your essential question. This tip may take some time, but itโs extremely important and the time will be worth it! .:.Use specific types of questions .:. Since essential questions must engage students in conversation and deep thought, they cannot be questions that have a โright thereโ answer, such as โWhat is a food chain?โ This question has an answer that students can find in a text. There are some particular types of questions that we use to create our questions. They start with the following question stems: what if, should, why, how, and which one. Once youโve chosen and unpacked your standard, match it with one of these sentence stems to form a question! .:. Make it interesting .:. Information Investigators is supposed to be fun! Creating a real-world scenario that goes with your essential question is one way to achieve this key aspect of the process. For example, in one of the Information Investigators weโve taught in the past on fossils, we have the students pretend that they work at the Grand Rapids Public Museum and are hired to create an exhibit for the museum. The students enjoy this challenge and it brings excitement to the process of learning. It is your turn to try! You can now begin on your journey to teaching and facilitating your first Information Investigators by creating an essential question. We hope these tips give you a better understanding on how to create essential questions. When you can't decide, it's not a good idea to make light of it. Indecisiveness may be a personality trait, but severe problems could also cause it. Why am I so indecisive? might be an essential question to ask yourself. What should you do then? โ You need to make your own decisions, even if you don't want to do it. โ You should still choose if you notice that you can't figure it out, no matter how small the problem is. โ People often have difficulty assembling decisions because they don't believe they can think for themselves and think that others are better at making the right choice. The problem is it gives other people more power than itself. Then, you let others make decisions and do things you should be doing on your own, which is not suitable for you. The best thing you can do instead is to start believing in yourself. In this case, no one else can make your decisions for you, and you have to make them for yourself. What does indecisive mean?Indecisive people can't make up their minds or choose or do anything that doesn't solve a problem, so they are called that. What does Indecisive mean? Even though we all experience it from time to time, feeling overwhelmed and concerned about things that aren't significant is not healthy. Delays are often thought of as a personality trait. While this is true at times, you should not let indecisiveness rule your life so much that making important decisions is almost impossible. The definition of Indecisive -You will come to a point in your life when you have to start making your own decisions. This may happen at various times for different people, but you should never rely on others to make your decisions. An example of how this might work:Some people have a hard time making important decisions because they don't want to take responsibility for their lives and the consequences. Such as- โ Your partner, parent, or other family member made the final decision.โ If things don't work out well, you can say that it's their problem, not yours, because they made the last call. Why am I so indecisive? Is this a question you usually ask yourself? If you ask this question a lot, there may be a problem with your life. The world shouldn't end if you have to choose. When there are problems with the decision-making process, more significant issues, need to be addressed. 12 reasons for so indecisiveKeep in intellect that you may not be impacted by all of the reasons for hesitation you are considering, so keep this in mind as you examine each of them. Instead, you should look at yourself and try to figure out what caused your problems. If you do this, it will be a lot easier to talk about why you did it. 1. Perfectionism can be the root cause. It's easy for your perfectionism to get in the way of making good decisions when you're stressed out about the quality of your job, vacations, meals, or anything else for that matter. Many people don't like the idea of things not going as planned or making mistakes. Consider this:โ You've been asked to work extra hours.โ You might need the money, but if you accept the extra hours, you'll have to change or cancel your schedule. 2. Guilt can sometimes be the culpritEven though you may know what you want to do, you let what other people wish to influence your choice. If other people aren't necessary, you'll be able to figure out what you want. Learn to accept your guilt so that you don't always try to make people happy to get rid of it. 3. People-pleasing is not suitable for youBecause of relationships, you may have seen the never-ending fight to make the right choice. Honey, what do you want for supper? Some people in a relationship don't ask themselves why they aren't sure what to do. The reason for this kind of hesitation, it turns out, is that we tend to overthink other people when we make decisions or give too much weight to what others want. 4. Having doubts about yourselfEven though you know what you should do, you second-guess yourself because you aren't sure about your intellect or intuition. 5. Parental conflicts are common. The actions and personalities of our parents may have a long-term effect on us even when we are adults. โ Many people have overprotective and controlling parents, so they don't know how to make decisions on their own, so they don't know how to make decisions on their own.โ You might be too worried about how your parents will see your decision-making, or you might not know where to start.โ It's also possible that if an indecisive parent raised you, your style might have been influenced by them. 6. Fear Of ResponsibilitySome people put off or avoid making decisions because they don't want to be held responsible if something goes wrong. โ It's the people who let other people or things out of their control make decisions for them, not them.โ However, even though it may help you avoid making mistakes, it will also keep you from being in charge of your own life. It's worth it to make mistakes because, at the very least, they're yours. 7. Lacking Mentality, not so goodWhen you have a great attitude, you have the freedom to do anything you want at any given time. โ You believe that any more you need in the future will be there when you need it.โ A lack of mindset makes you try to get the most out of every choice.โ To save money and time, you try to do as many different things as possible. This way of thinking makes every decision a complicated one, but the one thing that isn't in the equation is what you want. 8. Self-doubt can be problematicA lack of confidence might make you second-guess yourself, even if you know what you want to do or what is best for you. Because you think your reasoning isn't good enough to make the best decision, you might put off making the decision. 9. Fear and insecurityUnfortunately, fear and insecurity often go hand in hand. It's natural to be worried about what our actions might do in the long run. Suppose you have two jobs at the same time. One wants to raise you, but the extra hours will conflict with your other job. 10. Overload or overpressure can be harmfulMany choices can make us feel like a deer in the headlights of a car, and we might not be able to move. But think about this: Let's say someone asks you what color you like, and there are so many colors to choose from that some people may find it hard to answer the question. 11. Thinking too muchWhen you think about too many different things at once, you might start overthinking. You might have been thinking about how to sell your baked cookies and got distracted by the price of an old egg beater that you saw. You might be stuck because there are so many things to think about. 12. Change can be hardThe last few years have been very different for you. Even if a change is good, it can be stressful, unpleasant, or scary. How to stop being indecisive? The most important thing to come to terms with is to stay with it even if things go wrong. Make sure you have the knowledge and skills to make an intelligent decision, not just flip a coin or let it happen by chance. Here are a few steps for stopping being indecisive- โ People wouldn't be hemming and hawing over decisions if it were that simple, but that's not the case. โ We might think that being decisive means making a quick decision, but research shows that taking your time can help you make a better choice. โ Then again, it could be that you're more likely to think about things logically than to think about them. When we try to stop being unsure, our feelings can help us. โ Most of the time, breaking out of indecisiveness means having some level of confidence in your choices. Conclusion- Sometimes, things in life can be hard to understand. Avoid getting overwhelmed by all the things you need to think about when deciding. Making decisions is hard for everyone, but it's not always essential to get it right the first time. To make a decision, forgive yourself for your flaws and learn from your experiences in life; you need to make a decision now.
