Students will simplify 10 algebraic expressions by combining like terms and using the distributive property. This resource works well as independent practice, homework, extra credit or even as an assignment to leave for the substitute (includes answer key!) Top 3 Reasons to Use Coloring Activities in the Classroom: 1- Coloring activities minimize off-task student behavior (making it more likely for students to complete the assignment in the allotted time frame) because they want to see what the end result will look like. 2- Coloring activities make self-checking simple for students: "I got blue for #5...how'd you get red?" 3- Coloring activities provide the teacher with a way to quickly assess student understanding while floating around the room: "Marie's coloring sheet looks off...I better go over to her desk and check on how she's doing." Worried about kids just coloring?...I was too. I require my students to have work shown for each problem as I would with any assignment: "Turning in a beautiful piece of art without the math to back it up doesn't count as doing your assignment, kiddos!" ALGEBRA ACCENTS Coloring Activities are also great for those students that always seem to finish the regular assignment early. It's more practice problems disguised as a fun and easy coloring sheet! ____________________________________________________ CLICK HERE to sign up for my newsletter and receive a surprise freebie! ____________________________________________________ ALGEBRA ACCENTS, LLC Terms of Use: © Copyright Marie De Los Reyes for Algebra Accents, LLC All rights reserved by author. This fun coloring sheet has 20 verbal phrases to match with algebraic expressions. Your students will love practicing their algebra skills in anticipation to coloring the cool picture. Unlike many matching activities, students will be challenged with these expressions because they all contain only the numbers 2, 6 and the variable n. No guessing here. Enjoy! This activity addresses the Common Core Standards 5.OA.A.2 and 6.EE.A.2., but may also be relevant to other grade levels depending on your district's curriculum. CCSS.Math.Content.5.OA.A.2 Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation "add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2" as 2 × (8 + 7). CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers. CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2.a Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example, express the calculation "Subtract y from 5" as 5 - y. CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2.b Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity. For example, describe the expression 2 (8 + 7) as a product of two factors; view (8 + 7) as both a single entity and a sum of two terms.
