Nothing says summer like large, sunny rose blossoms, and this 2014 introduction from Jackson & Perkins is a perfectly beautiful example. Summer Surprise sets the garden ablaze with 5-inch, clove-scented blooms of a gorgeous orange and yellow. But dont think they begin and end the same color. Instead, they change as they mature, starting off yellow with lovely orange edging, but finishing as a wonderful blend of both cheerful colors. They are an absolute joy to watch. Each bloom is comprised of around 25 petals and set atop 14- to 16-inch stems just perfect for cutting. And you will definitely want to cut a few, so their delightful fragrance can perfume your home.Even when not in bloom, youll love having this rose growing in your garden. The semi-glossy, dark green foliage is very attractive, and its size makes it ideal for a variety of uses, from inclusion in sunny beds and borders to hedges and even large containers. It should be pruned in the spring, to half height or 18-20 inches above the ground, with the removal of old canes and dead wood. Cut back canes that cross each other. Gardeners in warmer climates will want to cut the remaining canes by one-third, while those in colder climates will probably need to trim it a bit more.NOTE: Tree and patio roses are hardy to Zone 6 regardless of the rose variety grafted to their tops.

Grace your garden with a red rose beyond compare. From its saturated scarlet blooms to its glossy, healthy foliage, this floribunda is simply flawless. When the big, red blooms open in summer they give you another reason to be obsessed: their mild, spicy fragrance.Obsession was named Jackson and Perkins Rose of the Year in 2015, and for good reason. The vivid red tones and intoxicating fragrance are beyond compare, and the fully double blooms average about 4 inches wide and offer 17 to 25 petals. The dark and glossy foliage also provides a classic contrast with the bright red blooms, creating an intensely romantic display. And the whole plant offers superb garden performance year after year.Like other floribundas, Obsession excels at setting lots of blooms in a season, holding them in big clusters rather than on single stems. This makes them very showy and also excellent cut-flowers. You can cut a whole bouquet with one snip. Obsession is all the more impressive because of the blooms and their radiant color. This compact shrub grows just about 3 feet high by 3 feet wide, making it great for creating a low hedge, filling out the front of rose beds, or foundation plantings under windows. Just be sure to plant it somewhere with good drainage and full sunlight. Prune it in early spring to remove dead wood, open up air circulation, and to keep the plant compact enough for its chosen garden spot. Once you realize how easy and rewarding to grow this rose is, you are sure to become obsessed. NOTE: Tree and patio roses are hardy to Zone 6 regardless of the rose variety grafted to their tops.

Bred right here at Jackson & Perkins, and an All-American Rose Selections (AARS) Winner in 1992, the year it was introduced, this classic hybrid tea has blooms that only get better with age, not just aging gracefully, but maturing magnificently. Appearing in flushes throughout the season, long, pointed, ovoid buds expand to create 5-inch, high-centered blooms, endowed with up to 35 petals in vivid coral tones, which deepen in intensity over the long life of the flower, remaining beautiful long after others have faded. The flowers smell subtly spicy making it an especially nice cut flower. With an upright habit, the bush grows up to 4 feet in height and width and has lush, semigloss, dark green foliage. It thrives in full sun in beds, borders, and containers. For best results, plant in moist, well-drained soil. Spring pruning should include the removal of old canes and dead or diseased wood. Also, cut back canes that cross over each other. If you live in a warm climate, cut back the remaining canes by about one third. Colder areas will probably require a bit more pruning than that. Remove spent blossoms to facilitate reblooming. Provide freeze protection in the spring with winter protection if grown in a container.

Place in a seed tray, with saturated but not soaking wet soil, cover with plastic wrap, and place in fridge for 10-12 weeks. This cold period puts the seed in a state of hibernation, thus causing it to activate when warmed back up. Then remove and place in an area where the temp is around 70-75 degrees. Only about 40-50 percent of seeds will sprout. Never touch the seedling with your hands, use a spoon to transplant to bigger pots when needed. Fertilize, and when the plant is around a foot tall, plant outside, fertilizing again.
