Fabergé. Egg
Imperial Fifteenth Anniversary Egg, Russia (1911; made by the House of Fabergé; enamel, gold, diamonds, rock crystal, watercolor on ivory). Gift of Emperor Nicholas II to wife and Empress Consort Alexandra Feodorovna. No separate surprise was made for the egg, despite the tsar's explicit instructions. Perhaps the paintings - the Imperial family, places and events associated with the tzar's 1896 coronation - are a "built-in" surprise. Shown in its original velvet and silk lined wood case.
