The artist used his own luggage after traveling from Havana to New York. The interior space of his suitcase, as an allegory of a window, was closed with the bricks of Manhattan. It is a piece that embodies, in a poetic manner, the situation of traveling and immigration. The baggage is always the object that contains our memories and more important things when we are traveling. The brick wall and its weight create a metaphor about the impossibility of returning and also about the barriers we carry in life.
Late Night Randomness is a collection of photos we have found in searching the web that don't necessarily fit in with our other posts or is perhaps a little too edgy to present earlier in the day. The
ITEM: Vintage Suitcase . Hard Shell Travel Case . Repurposed / Upcycled . Collage / Decoupage . Artist Case / Craft Storage . Art Supplies DETAILS: I purchased this hard shell (hard case) vintage weekender suitcase at an estate sale last summer, and have upcycled/repurposed it. Here's how I gave it some new life ..... I cleaned up the original 1980's "cornflower blue" suitcase, and removed the torn, tattered and stained inner liner. A few coats of slate gray paint was applied, inside and out. On the exterior of the case, images, words and phrases from various sources were layered and collaged onto a background of vintage sheet music. ( I collaged both back and front.) When all was dry, I gave the exterior a few coats of semi-gloss varnish to seal the piece. I further embellished the look with several strands of torn fabric, a white metal star, and verdigris "pendant". The interior of the case is simply a painted slate gray finish. The case now has an upbeat and colorful yet vintagey mellow look to it. For Christmas, I created another for my granddaughter, and filled it with art supplies! Perfect for any type of storage or display. The suitcase is NOT recommended for commercial travel. The suitcase measures 15 by 10.5 inches (plus 3 inch handle extension) and is 4.5 inches high. The cost to ship this item IS INCLUDED in the price of the listing, via the USPS Parcel Select. No further shipping charges! As always, happy to answer any questions you may have before purchase. Every Vagabond needs a Suitcase So I set about making one for my Lady Vagabond using one of the Stamperia blanks KC56 I started by priming my whole case inside and out with Gesso K3P08N, then I painted the outside with Allegro Terra d'Ombra KAL106 brown and sprayed the inside with Aqua Colors Turchese (Turquoise)KAQ018, Cuoio (Leather) KAQ004 and Verdone (Dark Green) KAQ001. When everything was dry I used Antonis compass stencil KSAT15 on the lid of the box using Allegro Cuppuccino KAL90. Stiking to the same paint, I then stncilled he rest of the box using the new Once Upon a Time stencil KSTDG06 and Classic Wallpaper KSTDG07. For the locks and the finishing touch round the edge of the lid I used my stencil called Luggage KSG455. I poured some Polyurethane resin into my moulds "Fly Machine" K3PTA482, Locks K3PTA484 and Antonis mould K3PTA488 for the saying under the handle "This way for Adventure" then painted them with my "Rust combo" Allegro Mattone KAL20, Arancione KAL08 and Terra d'Ombra KAL 106. For the verdigris look I added some Turchese with Texture Sand paste K3P40 and a little dark green Aqua Colour mixed together. For the final accent I added some copper Cerantica wax on the right hand side of all the raised areas. I also used one of the greyboard KLSPDA413 laser cut clock parts as a base under all my resin pieces and painted this with all the colours mentioned above. The inside of the box was finished off with some of the paper from the 12x12 paper pad. SBBL82
