The Cemetery Project is on hold for the time being as I got tired of it. Will continue when inspiration returns. In the meantime I took up another terrain project. Back when I started thinking about building scenery I listed several environment types, and for each of them which terrain they might contain. Like this: WOODS trees woods rocks mushroom ring shrine of St. Hubertus uprooted tree FIELDS rocks trees fences windmill ruined cottage rotting wagon with supplies mud Since these two environments share a good number of terrain pieces - rocks, trees... for the building project I combined them into a single category I named Wilderness. Plenty has been done, although some of it was just some extra work on pieces you might have already seen on the blog. Once again I found inspiration in Diablo III, where I observed the Fields of Misery area and its features. I gathered up a folder of reference photos, too. The overall tone of the Wilderness environments differs from the Cemetery; the colour scheme is much warmer thanks to the use of dry yellow static grass and brown soil. I used two shades of Field Grass from Noch, as well as three types of Gamer's Grass tufts in order to prevent an overly monotonous look. * * * Forests and trees. A Citadel tree on a scratchbuilt larger base. The base is polystyrene built up on MDF. The reverse of the same piece, to show the magpie I put on the tree's portruding root. This is a combination of Wyrd and Citadel trees. A Citadel Wood tree on an extended base. A tree from Wyrd. An older piece, but now I've redecorated its base to match the new idea. A forest area terrain. Another one just like it is on its way. This terrain has been through a number of transformations in its lifetime. * Rocks. My process for making these includes use of polystyrene, papier-mâché and plaster. Rocky outcrop I. Rocky outcrop II. Rocky outcrop III. * Special features. This group is comprised of pieces that are landmarks and/or annomalies in the wilderness. When used for gaming they will serve as objectives or as terrain with special rules. The Arch. There is something odd about it, and people tend to avoid it. It's a resin kit from Origen Art. The Standing Stone. This piece was my brother's idea: a standing stone that looks gravity-defying and uncanny. Also, it does have a habit of moving around when no one is looking. My addition to the concept was a subtle face. I carved it into a small piece of plaster and blended it with the polystyrene rock. Fairy Ring. Folklore warns against touching the mushrooms that form the circle, and entering the ring is regarded as even more perilous. They say it can transport tresspassers to the cruel land of the Fae. * As you can see from the group shot, the set is shaping up nicely. I'm planning to do another area forest and another one or two lonely trees. A water well and some stone field fences might be a good idea, too. And I could really use a proper, textured and flocked gaming board...

More scatter terrain, this post includes a road block which can be chosen as a Support option, a pile of fire wood, log storage and lots of sacks of grain. Road Block I purchased the mini dolls house furniture initialing to scatter them among the interior of buildings but found although they looked great it become a bit of a hindrance and nuisance when placing figures within a building. So I decided to make a road block out of most of them and only keep a few items of furniture as scatter terrain within buildings. I used a piece of Evergreen styrene plastic as the base and glued each item of furniture on the base with superglue. The furniture had a very plastic dull look to them, I decided to give them a more realistic look by dry brushing with Vallejo model colour flat earth and off white followed by random streaks of Agrax Earthshade. Flocked with Woodland scenic earth blend and also added a few rocks with the flock. different views of the road block. BEF manning the road block on the outskirts of Dunkirk. FIRE WOOD FILE close up shot of the stacked pile of wood. Close up image of chopped wood ready for the fireplace, there is also a axe embedded on one of the blocks. A covering to keep the wood dry. First step in the construction is to visit the park and gather pieces of wood of similar diameter. Cut them into equal size pieces using a saw ( the saw I used is meant for metal cutting but I found that it gave a neat cut edge), these will be the pieces that will be used to create the stacked pile. Also cut up a few more smaller pieces of wood, these will be used to create the chopped pieces on the ground. Set up the wood without gluing them on a piece of plastic card and outline the base size needed with a pencil. Remove the wood and cut out the base with box cutters. Secure each of the wood pieces on the base with super glue. All the pieces glued in place. The axe was constructed from wire, use pliers to squeeze together one end of the wire and flatten it. Next use the pliers to blend the portion that was flatten at right angle. Roughen up the surface of the wire with sandpaper and finally use the box cutters to trim of the excess wire to form a handle. Completed axe. Make a cut in the piece of wood and glue the axe in place. Now to make a cover cut a piece of cotton into a square. Soak it in PVA glue and mould it over the wood. Once the PVA glue is dry, fine tune the cover with the use of super glue. Once the super glue has dried, use green paint to paint the base and cover and flock the base with Woodland scenic earth blend. BEF Bren team on overwatch. LOG STACK Once again gather some wood pieces of roughly equal width. Trim them to equal lengths. Glue them onto a piece of plastic card with super glue. Once the longer pieces are glued in place, trim 4 short pieces of wood of the same diameter and punch them thru the base and glue in place. Cut out the base and chamfer the edges using box cutters. The 4 smaller pieces of wood embedded in the base seemed a bit to high so I trimmed them down as can be seen in the following image. Final step was to coat the base with some green paint and flock. The great thing about using real pieces of wood is that you don't need to paint them. More BEF troopers using the logs as cover. GRAIN SACKS. I picked up some of these items in a second hand store at the MOAB event. They are made from plaster, I also sculpted some of them using Milliput and based on Everygreen stryene sheets. The ones that have grain spilling out are ones I made. They were first coated with a black primer and dry brushed using Vallejo model colour German camo biege. Highlighting was done by adding increasing portions of VMC Iquai sand to the base and finally adding some stains on the bags using Agrax earthshade. The base was painted green and flocked. Cheers John

The beginning of this Frostgave Terrain Project can be found here http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/frostgrave-terrain-part-1.html It would appear that my forays into the World of Frostgrave have captured the interest of a number of parties – over a thousand page views on the day I posted part 2 of the terrain build. It would appear that this particular game has fired up so many imaginations and created a vast community almost overnight. I believe the official forum is hosted on the Lead adventure Forum and the volume of threads appears to be growing daily. There is also a useful Rules FAQ on the top of the thread which I will no doubt review once I begin playing the game. I’ll be posting shortly about the figures I purchased for this game in another post but suffice to say that I have started painting the minis. Hopefully my first warband can be produced by the end of the month. However back to the terrain building. Whilst assembling the foam core stuff over the weekend I was all of a sudden struck by the thought as to the integrity of this city emerging from the ice. Is this a ruined city with buildings ripped away by a glacial advance leaving just the footprints of their foundations or is this an abandoned city made inhabitable by the onset of freezing temperatures and just fallen into disrepair. Thoughts please. Whilst travelling Hadrians wall a couple of years ago I was struck by the fact that the wall has disappeared in the lower coastal areas as a result of man dismantling the Stone structures and using them elsewhere whereas the parts still in the uplands still stand after almost 2000 years. My final thoughts are that Frostgrave will be a skeletal city, many of the stone structures will still be in place. Some may have partially collapsed and fallen into disrepair. Timber from roofs, doors and frames will have long since collapsed under the weight of snow and ice and what remained has been taken by foraging bands for firewood and their own structures. One of the questions I am regularly asked is do you plan these builds. The answer is simply no. I create a vision in mind of what I want (usually inspired by pictures and other tables) and then just start. The only real thought that goes into the process is the base materials and procuring sufficient (at the best price) before the build. This vision (I stress is in my mind) then helps me to select the possibilities of mixing scratchbuilt terrain with ‘off the shelf pieces’. The latest of which can be seen here…these three items were found on ebay for the princely sum of £40 and fit perfectly with my Frostgrave ambition. I’ll probably sell on the dragon altar (too ruined !) and it will off set my costs for the other two pieces. Since acquiring the larger piece I have discovered that it was produced by Ziterdes (there are a couple of other pieces that have caught my attention.) The Graveyard setting looks great and the ruined temple (?) is just wonderful. However both are too grey so these will get repainted into the colour scheme I am adopting for the city. My plan is to paint all the items black before I start the onerous task of drybrushing the whole city. This way it will keep all the pieces tied to the same colour scheme. So before I sign off from this post a couple of thoughts on table size. It would apprear from all the reports that I have read that this game is best played on a 3ft square table with lots of terrain. With a number of players interested in playing this in the shed I am going to need more than one set up. All my basic boards are 50cm x 50cm square. So therefore My tables will be built in modular sections on these sized boards (I’ll think about storage later on) – if I create 8 boards this will give me a degree of flexibility to create two 1mtre square tables or one larger version. That’s the thought at the moment but I am sure it will change ;-) Until next time part 4 can be found here http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/frostgrave-terrain-part-4-first-painted.html
“Enoch climbed to the highest point within the cavern, and found what remained of a traveler's camp from long ago: a few tattered bits of cloth, a spoon, and a broken spear. Creating a piece of terrain is like raising a child– You pour all of your knowledge and love into it and, when it's all grown up, send it off into the world. There's a bit of anxiety and some empty nest syndrome when it leaves, but you're kind of glad to have it out of your hair. That's how it is with the Wrath of Kings displays as I prepare to ship them out. They've been the focus of my life for the past two months, which may not seem like a very long time but, in the world of terrain building, it's an eternity. I didn't ever think I'd see the surface of my work table again! My studio will definitely feel empty without them, but the good news is that there's always more terrain to build and models to paint. I took the time to take plenty of detail shots before I packed them up, and they'll be added to my new Wrath of Kings Terrain gallery shortly. In this week's post I'll show the steps each display went through from concept art to a finished piece of terrain. For each display I drew on inspiration from Five Houses' environmental art. From there I worked out a color concept for the layout, taking care to incorporate as many flat surfaces as possible for model placement. Then it was on to the construction and painting. Here's how everything shaped up: GORITSI NASIER TEKNES SHAEL HAN HADROSS I'm really happy with these. Each display has its own unique style of architecture and distinct color scheme. They all presented me with different challenges and the opportunity to try out some new techniques. The coral on the Hadross table, for example: I wrestled to come up with something I could use to make convincing coral formations and when the solution finally presented itself it was so glaringly obvious: Wood glue-soaked foliage clusters. The glue hardens the spongy clumps, and then they can be painted to resemble coral. Well, it's time to send the kids off to their new home... 'Til next time!
