ABOUT THE ORIGINAL PUBLICATION The Journal des Dames et des Modes & Costume Parisien, was published in Paris by Jean Baptiste Selleque & the Abbe, Pierre de la Mesangere from 1797 to 1839. Selleque and La Mesangere created and produced a series of hand colored plates every five days showing all along these troubled years, the various fashion changes in France. Artists were famous as Carle Vernet, Philibert Louis Debucourt, Horace Vernet and Louis Marie Lante. The Journal was known for the quality of its texts and illustrations and was the leading women’s magazine in Napoleonic and Post Napoleonic France. This fashion journal for ladies and gentlemen was founded in the late 18th century and hand-colored French fashion engravings were responsible for introducing the new fashion styles throughout the major cities of Europe and thus benefited greatly to the clothing industry of Paris. First dated normally, after the plate 29 the journal was dated with the new revolutionary calendar ( an 6, an 7, etc.) The Directoire period, (1795 - 1799) offered a period of calm after what was called “the terror” and the French society was in search of entertainment. Fashion was classical Greek and Rome style with some audacity to show transparency and nudity. The most visible examples were called “ les Incroyables et les Merveilleuses”. The consulat period (1799 - 1804 ) saw a new elite emerging comprised of the richest citizens. These prominent citizens established new codes for a new society with much more morality and fashion changed again. The corset reappeared and women were even allowed to wear trousers! The political regime called Premier Empire is the period when NAPOLEON became Emperor in 1804 until his abdication in 1814. The Journal Dames et des Modes, Costume Parisien was known for the quality of its texts and illustrations and stayed the leading women’s magazine in the Napoleonic France. Napoleon himself used to recommend the magazine as a guide to the good taste. The hand colored prints we have the pleasure to present are in very good condition or good condition on a fine medium strong creamy white paper with strong plate marks. There might be some soiling mainly in the margins and some offsetting . These prints have an horizontal fold in the middle as they were folded in the magazine in order to fit in the mail box. PLEASE NOTE: Shipping in the US is free. I do ship overseas, but unfortunately the US Postal Service has raised their international rates substantially. Therefore, I will have to estimate shipping costs based on the country of destination and add that to the cost of the print. While I do ship to Europe, I do not ship to Germany at this time.
