Our Silicone First Feeding Set helps you to introduce solid foods and transition your baby to self-feeding. The suction base keeps the bowl from sliding or flipping over. Great for use on highchair trays or tables. The easy to grip double-end silicone spoon grows with baby – one end is for dipping into purees and the other for scooping solid foods. The bowl is designed with a curved handle so mom or dad can hold and help with feeding. Made with 100% food-safe silicone, the spoon is soft and safe for teething babies. The set includes a clear silicone lid with a secure fit. Ideal for saving leftovers – the clear lid allows you to easily see stored food.

While it is recommended that infants solely consume breast milk or infant formula for the first 6 months of their life, some babies will show clear behavioural signs that they are ready for solids before they reach 6 months of age. Remember, all babies are different and as long as your baby is at least 4 months old, and the right choices of solids are chosen, there will be no health risks associated with starting with sold foods between 4-6 months. Check with your baby health nurse if you want guidance on this important developmental stage of your baby’s life. Once babies reach the age of 6 months, whether breast-fed or on formula, they do require extra nutrients, particularly iron, as the baby’s own iron stores are gradually being depleted. Babies also need to start eating solid food to help their mouth and jaw muscles develop optimally for speech and swallowing. Signs that your baby is ready for solids food are easily identified: Babies who can sit up and hold their head up by themselves Babies who show that they are interested in food by watching adults eat or grabbing food from you. Babies who seem increasingly hungry are likely to be ready to try some solid food. Babies 6 months – Baby’s first solid food A baby’s first solid food should be a pureed texture. Pureed vegetables or rice cereal fortified with iron are good choices. Start solid food after or in between a milk feed and start with just 1-2 teaspoons of the food. If the baby pushes the food out of their mouth with their tongue, wait another couple of days before trying again. Always try just one new food at a time, and wait a couple of days in between each new food that you try adding onto their existing food. If your baby shows any signs of allergy with the new food, such as swelling or a skin rash, leave that food and try later. Another important strategy is to offer savoury flavours, such as cereals and vegetables, before sweeter options, such as fruit and custards, in order to get your baby used to both savoury and sweet flavours. If babies become used to only eating sweet foods including fruit, custard and yoghurt they are more likely to reject savoury flavours. If your baby appears to reject a new food, be patient, as it can take up to 10 exposures of a new food for baby to get used to the new taste. Continue the feeding process by offering solids once per day after your baby’s regular milk feed and gradually build up to three times each day. Increase this amount to 2-3 tablespoons of solid food for each meal as baby tolerates. Good first foods for babies include purees of carrot, pumpkin, peas, zucchini, pear, apple, banana, custard, plain yogurt, avocado and iron fortified rice cereal. A baby will indicate when he/she has had enough by turning their head or refusing to allow any more food into their mouth. Babies 7-8 months – purees to mashes to minced foods Once your baby reaches an age of 7 to 8 months, change from purees to more of a mashed consistency, then onto minced and finely chopped foods. The types of foods they are eating should also expand to include protein rich foods such as tuna, minced meat and chicken, egg, lentils and dried peas and beans and a range of dairy, including cheese. It is also safe to add in grains and cereals such as oats, wheat, rice, couscous, and baby muesli. If there is a history of food allergies in your family, avoid fish, eggs, nuts and dairy food until your baby is 12 months old. Remember that the time of transition from purees to a minced texture is extremely important, as this is the time that they need to get used to different textures. Babies chewing (even if they do not have teeth) with help with speech development. Of particular importance is to ensure that your baby is getting enough iron from lean red meat. Babies aged 7-8 months require lean red meat in small quantities, at least three times a week to get all of the iron they require for optimal growth and development. Babies 9+ months – finger style foods Once babies reach 9 months of age, offer solids before fluids as solid food should start to replace milk as the main meal. Babies should also be encouraged to chew finger style foods. Soft strips of meat, cubed vegetables, pieces of soft fruit, cut up sandwiches, pasta, small strips of bread and cubes of cheese are all nutritious options to help babies learn to chew. The average baby will still be having 2-4 feeds each day or around 600-800mls of formula in between or after meals. Remember, cow’s milk is not appropriate until infants reach the age of 12months, when their kidneys are developed and able to properly digest cow’s milk. Where possible, try and feed your infant at the table so they can observe other family members eating – this is how babies learn appropriate table rules and manners. Once your baby reaches the age of 12 months, they should be routinely sitting at the family dinner table to enjoy their main meals – try not to worry about the mess! Special Note: It is recommended that infants solely consume breast milk or infant formula for the first six months of their life, as infant formula and breast milk provide all of an infant’s calorie and nutrient requirements. Breast-feeding is also a cheap option for parents!
