Since I'm still enamored with needle felting, the challenge was on to find a new small gift or ornament to share with co-worker...

Yesterday my daughter went for a vacation to Bali, Indonesia. She asked me to take care of her little hamster: Benicio, so since Saturday I have a tiny guest. Sunday she called me and said she misses the little guy already so I decided to make her a little hamster to take with her to Bali. Last Monday I gave it to her wrapped and in a nice gift box and told her not to open it until she arrives. Last night my neighbour asked me if I want to help collecting fallen apples from a city-garden behind my house and I told her I'm sorry but I want to stay with the phone in case my daughter calls. This neighbour woman is the spitting image of Hyacinth, U.K. readers must know her from a show called "keeping up appearances", if she walks trough he neighbourhood you hear people shut their doors and close the curtains. Well, she asked me why I want to stay with the phone and so I told her, my daughter is going to the other side of the world and we were both a bit nervous.( I thought of it's perfectly normal to feel that) "Aaaah," she said " why is that? I raised my daughter to be self-confident and secure and she backpacked through the United States without me feeling a bit worried, you have to let your children go" and off she went sticking her nose in the air. Don't get me wrong, I can get along with her just fine and she often makes me laugh but when she took off I felt a sudden sadness. I raise(d) my children to feel secure and with self-confidence, so why did I feel like an over-protecting Mom? I never was like that, when my daughter left the nest and moved into her own apartment I was happy for her to start her own independent life. I realized it was since my husband died suddenly 6 years ago, the world collapsed , no security, no certainty everything can change in a minute. Since then there is always a tiny little voice in the back of my head lurking ; you never think of such a thing to happen to you, other people die but not your husband who appeared to be healthy and who was just 45. That little voice isn't there all the time and I go through life rather jolly and positive. But sometimes this ice-cold hand grabs my heart and if someone points you to , what seemed to my neighbours opinion, irrational behaviour, it all gets to the surface. Well, I had a good night of sleep and thought of how often people are judgemental but also accepting my sometimes irrational fear , I know where it comes from and I can look at it in a rational way. I'm sure my daughter has a wonderful time in Bali and when she sees the little hamster she goes wild!

Charmingly bewildered animals are the subject of choice for UK artist Lindsey Thomas. The London-based artist carefully felts wool to shape pudgy animals with plaintive expressions that belie their cartoony cuteness and party-ready accessories. Wide-eyed bears ride tricycles with balloons and a donkey with strong side-eye sports a flamingo pool floaty. Thomas graduated from Middlesex University with a degree in illustration, where she also experimented with mixed media. In an artist statement on her website, Thomas explains, “As a child, I was forever drawing animals and imagining what they would be like if they could peel themselves from the paper. More

Today I have the honor of interviewing Nguyen Le, an artist and Etsy seller who creates delicate jewelry in many forms - knit, needle felting, and embroidery, all under the name Knit Knit. In particular, I am fascinated by her hand-embroidered totem animals, which are incredible in their tiny detail. Everyone, let's meet Nguyen! I am in love with your miniature embroideries - what inspired you to create them? May I ask how long it takes to stitch one? Why thank you! I like combining materials, and especially fiber with things that they're not normally paired with, such as metal. I was making very simple stitched embroidered pendants, and one day a friend suggested I embroider animals. I love woodland creatures and also doing detailed embroidery - it was a great fit! I came up with a series of embroidered power/totem/spirit animals.Since the embroideries are so tiny, it's hard draw out the image on felt. What I usually do is make dots where the eyes should be and eyeball it from there. Each animal is different, so the embroidery time varies for each piece. I adore the tiny-ness of your work! What do you think inspires you to create on this scale? I wanted to make embroidered jewelry, so I knew the pieces couldn't be too big. There is something special about tiny work that I love too - it's the delicateness. How long have you been stitching? On and off since I was in junior high. My mom used to sew and embroider a lot when I was a kid, and I picked it up. What is your first crafting memory? I remember sponge painting in kindergarten and getting scolded for mixing up the sponges in the wrong color. I guess it made an impression because I haven't done it since! Where in the world are you? Brooklyn, NY! Do you have an art background - if so (or if not), how do you think this has affected your work? I have a photography degree. The composition of a photograph is very important to making your statement, and I think that's helped me in the composition of my jewelry pieces. I'll move things around until I feel it flow together, much like looking at a subject from different angles before photographing it. As a former New Yorker, I know it's tough to find a craft store in the city - do you have any favorites? I love Brooklyn General, Purl Soho, and my neighborhood craft store, Fiber Notion. Do you like to craft with friends or are you more of a solo crafter? Both - I work from home, so I craft alone a lot. I get more done when I'm crafting alone, but it's nice to craft with company. It brings new energy and ideas - always refreshing! Name one project of yours that you LOVE. I love all of my pieces, but I really love my embroidered deer brooch. The deer is my power animal, so this has a special place in my heart. 5 movies you LOVE Amelie, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Everything Is Illuminated, Breakfast At Tiffany's, and The Fountain. ***** Thank you, Nguyen, for taking time to share a few thoughts and words with us!
