Super cute set of 4 felt napkin rings. Never used, but probably old stock, these are made to look hand-stitched and a bit folk artsy - they would make a wonderful addition to any table. I wish I had more, however if you're a family or group of four, this set can single-handedly bring back the art of table meals and therefore conversation, etiquette, table setting. Has the world gone mad? What a wonderful thing, to sit and converse with another human while removing your napkin (cloth or paper!) from its convenient holder while proceeding toward a shared meal. I think they're lovely and can be a lesson to the younger ones... Four different types of leaves, in four different colors - much fun! In original box that is about 8" x 9", and for scale, the orange leaf is 4" tall. The rings are 1-7/8" across...

Thanksgiving has come and gone. What a wonderful day we had here at our farmhouse. It was full of family, good food and drink, and laughter. It sure is a lot of work getting this house in shape. Mom came on Tuesday and helped out (Thank you Mom!). Here is our dining room the morning of the day. Normally this room is my shipping room and the spot we keep all our farmers market supplies. The table is never clear. But that morning it was. After the turkeys went into the ovens, we started working on the table. I know - all of this is supposed to be done the day before. But not in my lifetime. I piled on my Indian block printed tablecloths/bedspreads (like these) and then collected some ethnic fabrics from my stash. Since Thanksgiving is "my" holiday, I put few little turkeys ...... amongst some moss and added an obligatory farmer and his sheep statue. After all, this is a sheep farm.... We collected some bittersweet from the orchard - love the color this time of year even if it is invasive as all get-out! and plopped it into some old green glass bottles with some faded sunflower heads.... Candles lit..... Ready to go! I'm not much for lots of planning of parties. In fact, this is almost the only party I throw all year with the exception of Julia's b-day and my Getting Stitched on the Farm Retreat Dinners. My sisters are great at planning and throwing parties but since I am the most disorganized person on the planet, it's not in my DNA. But this year, I did do a bit in advance. Since I have been in the Knitted Flower Mood, I decided to knit all the sisters, moms, and cousins a flower. It took me three nights and I made extras but it was a fun project. Here they are before felting.... I sewed pin backs from the craft store onto the back of each flower after felting. Then I made napkin rings out of green wool fabric that I had hanging around. Thanksgiving morning I set them all up with their napkins on the table for their beauty shot. There was a flurry of excitement as everyone chose their favorite flower color. And now they all have a pretty little pin to wear on their winter coats to remember the day by! I sent the extra napkin rings and flowers off to family members who couldn't make the trip and a good friend/knitter who is in rehab after a stroke (get well soon Peggy!). I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Now onto the next! If you want to do the same kind of project for your Christmas festivities, you can order the Sunflower and Zinnia to Knit and Felt new pattern available on the Shop Page of my website here or on Ravelry.

Are you planning to host a dinner party this season? Why not add some new décor or color accents to your table setting with these soft, 100% wool felt napkin rings! These are so easy to make and are a great way to use up any scraps you may have on hand or have picked up from our Felt Remnant Sales! Let’s dive in and make some table décor! Materials Felt scraps 3mm thick 100% Wool Designer Felt in Earth Tones Embroidery floss 2mm fabric elastic cord Buttons Metal snaps Sewing thread Needle Fabric scissors or utility knife Steps Choose your colors for your felt, threads and buttons. Next, cut out a strip for your napkin ring that is approximately 2” x 8”, and another strip for your accent (optional) that is 0.5” x 6.5”. This shorter piece will account for the overlap. I’m using 3mm thick 100% Wool Designer Felt in Sky Blue, White, and Earth Apple Green. Sew on the button to one end of the accent strip. Cut 1.5” of elastic and sew onto one end of the napkin ring strip. Place the accent strip in the centre of the larger napkin ring so that the end of the accent strip that does not have the button is aligned to where the elastic loop is (it will sit on top to hide it). Using a running stitch, or whip stitch, sew along the top & bottom of the accent strip on to the napkin ring. Done! Variation #2 Another way to do this is with snap closures, as they offer a very easy method of opening and closing the napkin rings. In this example, I used a blanket stitch around the whole thing to add some texture and detail. Steps Cut out a rectangle that is 2” x 8”. Blanket stitch around the perimeter of the rectangle. Sew the snaps on with a needle and thread approximately 1” away from the edge. One snap will be going on the underside since the other snap will be coming from above to snap closed. Choose a button and sew on the other side of where the “top” snap is. Done! This project can be altered in a lot of different ways - customize with different embellishments, iron on name labels, whatever you desire. Due to my recent aquatic adventures, my 'makers mojo' and I have not been getting on too well. Something about me being unbalanced (go ahead, make your jokes now) and the concentration and constant looking down of stitching, made me a bit queasy, dizzy and blurry. Now that I am finally coming 'round a bit, I felt the need to make something - anything. I thought that I should start off small and simple. Then fortuitously, I received an email from a friend asking me to recommend some sewing projects that might be suitable for 10 year old girls. I sent her some links and then later, she asked if I had any ideas that could be accomplished by 3 girls during a crafty sleepover with beginning sewing machine skills. I thought about it for a while, and finally resorted to Feltycuffs. Do you see what I did there? Instead of 'Fistycuffs' I said...yes, well. Felt is awesome, it's a no fuss, no muss material that makes up some seriously cool projects. It also ticks all the right boxes for a kid craft. However, once I started playing around with the felt, I started to imagine all the cool grown up stuff I could make using the same ideas. The first thing I came up with was a woven felt wrist cuff/bracelet. I will be showing you in a brief, step by step tutorial how to make your own. So, here we go! Gather up some felt scraps. You will need 2 pieces for the main cuff part. You can measure your wrist with a tape measure, making sure it is not too tight but, a comfortable length on your wrist. Once you have that measurement, add 2 - 2.5 inches (5.5 - 6.4 cm) for overlap. I cut my pieces 8.25 inches (21 cm) long by 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide. Then cut some skinny strips of felt slightly longer than your main pieces. I cut 4 strips. Using a rotary cutter and mat make this quick work, you can also use scissors. Now, working with the top piece of your main cuff (I used gray), use a craft knife* or small embroidery scissors, and a ruler to make 4 rows of small slits in the felt. To make this more even, you can place markings on the wrong side of the felt with a fabric marker. Make your slits just big enough for your skinny strips to fit through. I made my cuts every 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) along the length and in 4 rows across the width. I did not mark mine so they came out a bit wonky. * If you are doing this project with kids, you will want to supervise use of the sharp craft knife. Now start weaving in your skinny strips. It's up to you if you want to alternate the pattern. Try to be fairly gentle, as you don't want to stretch out the felt too much. Once you have woven in all the strips, trim off any excess length. I gave my finished piece a quick press with the iron before I continued. Next, Match the edges of your 2 cuff pieces, wrong sides together. Using a simple straight stitch on your machine, sew around the outer edge, using 1/8 inch (0.3 cm) seam allowance. In one end of your cuff, make a slit with a craft knife or scissors just big enough for your chosen button. On the opposite end, sew on your button. Wrap the cuff around your wrist to help find the proper placement of the button. Ta Da! A super cool, super easy woven felt wrist cuff! After I made this one, I couldn't stop. So, I made 2 Super Star cuffs for Pony Girl. I used the exact same technique for the cuffs but, without the woven element. I simply cut out 2 simple star shapes out of contrasting felt and appliqued them to the cuffs with a straight stitch. Here is Pony Girl rockin' her cuffs! (click the pic for 10 times the awesome!) And I still couldn't stop! What about a simple and elegant napkin ring? Does anyone use those anymore? I used to love looking at my mother's small collection of vintage napkin rings when I was a kid. I thought it would look so nice for a special dinner. Wait, there's more! What about place holders? These would be so pretty at a wedding, special party, or just because. So yes, endless possibilities! I made one wrist cuff with a crochet flower sewn on that turned out lovely. It was too dark to photograph by that point. I keep thinking of other ways to use this very simple idea. How about you, can you think of some? As always with my tutorials, please feel free to ask questions. And, if you make this project, or one inspired by this project, I would love it if you uploaded a photo to the "Lola By You" flickr group! Have a super star day! Oh, I almost forgot. Lola has a new Facebook page come check it out!
It took me the longest time to figure out how to enlarge pictures on my blog :) After lots of looking around on the internet, and lots of tinkering with editing the HTML, I found what works for me on blogspot. I'm looking at my screen in 1024x768, and have found that works well with all of the websites and blogs I visit. So a quick DIY or How-To on enlarging images. + First, upload your image. + Then go to the "Edit Html" tab at the top of where you are composing your blog (above and to the right of where all of your text formatting options are). Don't be scared of all the crazy Html code (it still overwhelms me to look at it ;)). + Each picture will have a code of something like this (click code to enlarge and see it better): + What you are looking for is what is in bold red below: + I always increase my picture sizes by 50%, but you can change them to whatever size works best for you and your blog. The key is that the width and height have to be proportionate. I have to get out my handy dandy calculator on my desktop to make sure I am increasing them correctly. + So, if I want to increase the width of 320px by 50%, I would type in 320/2 + 320, which equals 480. And the height of 400px is 400/2 + 400 = 600. + Then you must also increase the /s400/ number at the bottom (in red above). I always set this to 800. Sooo, your new html code will look like this: *Remember, all you change are the numbers. Do NOT delete any of the other characters or it will mess up the entire code. Believe me, I know ;) So below is a picture at regular size after uploading it - no increase in size has been made. While it still works fine, I think it's nice to have a larger image for people to view. Below is the image increased in size by 50%. So nice! :)
