Students can use this graphic organizer to break down a poem, song, or text b quoting figurative language they find. They have a space to quote it, identify the type of figurative language, and then write how the interpret the meaning behind the words. This form works with any poem, song, or text and can be used as an original lesson or practice. I have also used it as an exit slip after using it whole group. I recommend modeling it first with the same poem, text, or song for everyone. I have also included a handy reference chart with types of figruative language and a definition and example of each. Included types: hyperbole, metaphor, simile, idiom, proverb/adage, assonance, alliteration, consonance, personification, onomatopoeia, and irony. There are two versions of the reference chart and the graphic organizer, one is more primary focused while the other is more intermediate/middle school focused.

Melinda Cootsona might be considered the Intimiste of figurative abstraction. Her paintings are reminiscent of Bonnard and Vuillard in their depiction of private intimate moments in a personal life and world. They are abstracted portraits of everyday life. Her colors are soft and creamy with pleasing contrasts. Cootsona's paintings often contain a single figure though occasionally two figures appear as in Same Coin, with twin figures seated in a garden landscape merging contours of the land with the shapes of a human form.
