Cutty Sark, the preserved tea clipper at Greenwich, houses a collection of ships' figureheads from the 19th century. This one is 'Gordon of Khartoum'. Figureheads were popular from the 16th to the 19th century and in some countries - noteably Holland - there was a belief that a water spirit inhabited the figurehead which would guide the spirits of drowned sailors to the land of the dead. Sailors from ships without figureheads were doomed to wander. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figurehead to learn more about figureheads.
